The Owner purchased this house in 2013
Natives of the Périgord region of Dordogne, we bought La Maison d' Etre in the summer 2013 after we fell for her charm and the beautiful village of St Vincent de Cosse.
The house was beautifully restored by the previous owners and we continue to make improvements to the property
La Maison d' Etre present an exceptional location near the magnificent medieval town of Sarlat and the châteaux of Beynac, Castelnaud, Marquessac and Les Milandes, yet in a beautiful and peaceful village with nearby hiking trails which will take you through hamlets, forests, farms and along the beautiful Dordogne river.
My husband, son, friend and I recently stayed in this gorgeous property of La Maison d'Etrey overlooking the valley in a very little village where the church bells chimed. The property is split by a number of levels, and has been fully renovated that has an ambiance that is simply quite charming. It has a spacious tv room that we called a 'hug' as it is very snug. The kitchen is perfect for cooking, with every knife and pot alike. So a visit to the local market at St Cyprien (which is a MUST) made it an absolute joy to come home and try our cooking with local produce. Daniel is the owner of the property and contactable all through the week that we rented. We had a few questions and he always responded promptly which made ease of use in all aspects of the property, including payment processes. There is a pool but rather cold but my son still managed to have a swim (a quick dip). We absolutely enjoyed this property immensely and quite frankly, wish we could have stayed longer. It is located in a very small village where there is no supermarket, etc but who cares - it is so close to Beynac and St Cyprien, it didn't matter; it gave us an opportunity to continue exploring! A great location to explore all that Dordogne has to offer whilst providing a rural solitude to re-charge the batteries. Daniel also provides a list of the best places to eat and we chose La Petite Tornelle in Beynac - this was a wonderful lunch where one is not overwhelmed by tourists. If locals hang out there, and the restaurant is full, then it must be a winner and it was! I have just looked at other reviews, and they are spot on. This is a property not to miss!
Our family - two adults and two children aged 6 and 7 - had a wonderful time at La Maison d'Etre in late July. We appreciated everything - from Daniel's attentions and extensive information before our stay to the super-charming and comfortable house and gardens. We could have spent all day at the house - the beautiful grounds and a terrace which looks over the pool make for a wonderful place to laze in the sunshine and we had many a happy sundown petanque competition. We did drag ourselves away from the house, though, and enjoyed very varied trips out, from kayaking and a visit to the caves at Font de Gaume to the magical and highly-recommended candlelight night at Marqueyssac gardens. We can't fault our stay at La Maison d'Etre and very much hope to return again soon.
Our family, consisting of 4 adults and an 8 year old, spent an idyllic 2 weeks at la Maison d'Etre the first 2 weeks of July. We were able to just completely relax at this very comfortable, spacious property. The pictures just do not do it justice as it's far more beautiful in real life with lots of space to escape from each other, if necessary, for some quiet time.
We enjoyed cooking in the wonderful kitchen, cooling off in the pool after a day of sightseeing, taking evening walks down to see the local donkey (Ulysses) and sitting on the dining terrace enjoying the spectacular view and the cooling evenings.
We looked forward to getting to many of the local markets, visiting Beynac, Sarlat and the aquarium at le Bugue and even went further afield to Cahors for some wine tasting. 2 real highlights were the canoe trip down the Dordogne and the night market in St Cyprien. We could have stayed longer to enjoy more of this beautiful region of France and to totally relax at this lovely home.
Daniel was very helpful both before and during our trip. Made some great activity suggestions, provided complete details about the property and all appliances, WiFi, etc. Daniel and his wife also made the effort to meet us all before the end of our stay. It's nice to put a face to a name. We have rented other properties through VRBO and this is the first time an owner has wanted to meet us. Nice personal touch!
We would certainly recommend this property to others and would love to return sometime to see more of this area.
Thank you, Daniel, for sharing your lovely home.
The Senn, Verge, Leal family
Five adults spent a heavenly week at Maison d'Etre at the end of September. The house surpassed our expectations; it was comfortable and spacious, with lovely views over the valley. The kitchen is very well equipped. The location was perfect for touring the local caves and castles. The owner's recommendations for restaurants and other local services were helpful. This was a very peaceful and relaxing place to stay.
We spent a week at the end of June at this extraordinary house, and all agreed we could not have done better.
The village is quiet, with no services, but everything - food, necessities, touring - is within a 5-10 minute drive. We were grateful that we had not stayed in Sarlat or one of the nearby small tourist towns; they were extremely congested. Each day it was special to return to Maison d'Etre, the pool, the terrace, the great kitchen, and all its comforts.
We like to shop for food and cook at home as much as possible. The Sunday market at St Cyprien and the Wednesday market at Sarlat were great events in themselves, and made it possible to have fresh local food every day of the visit. The kitchen has everything one could want (and we are demanding when it comes to cooking). The supermarket at St Cyprien filled every other random need.
The owners extensive suggestions were extremely helpful, and right on the mark. We followed their advice on canoeing arrangements, markets, and shops and saved a lot of time and aggravation. (You also have to give extra points to owners that name their house with a pun.) The instructions for the house and appliances were detailed and clear. There were instructions for contacting neighbors and others in the event of problems, but we had no need, as everything worked without a hitch. There were detailed TV instructions, but we never turned it on. The dining room is large and well appointed, but we ate every meal on the terrace.
We had two or three days of extreme heat (over 100 F) and the stone house kept comfortably cool, and the pool and shaded outdoor dining made it enjoyable. The master bedroom and bath is large and very well appointed. The two upstairs bedrooms were less fancy but quite comfortable. They did get hot during the heat wave, but that we cured with a cheap electric fan.
We hope to return to the Dordogne and its great sights and food, and beautiful river. We have not found anything that suits a visit better than La Maison d'Etre.
We spent a wonderful week at Maison D'Etre and words do not adequately describe the beauty, peace, comfort and contentment we enjoyed here. The home is so beautifully restored, with special touches everywhere you look. The gourmet kitchen is a cook's dream. We prepared many wonderful meals after shopping the fabulous markets in surrounding towns. The terrace provided a beautiful place to dine each day with views of the surrounding area simply spectacular. After a day visiting the area's lovely towns we could hardly wait to return to Maison D'Etre. Bedrooms and baths are extremely well equipped and comfortable.
We were delighted to find recommendations for markets, restaurants, activities, even directions on how today pétanque (which was grand fun). We all - my sister and our husbands- declared the Dordgone the most beautiful area of France we have ever seen. Owner was so hospitable, thoughtful and easy to communicate with that we felt we truly were guests in his home. Our week provided a renewing, peaceful commune with the natural world surrounding Maison D'Etre. It was a magical week and we are so happy we found this gorgeous property.
La Maison d'Etre is in the middle of the Valley of the 5 Chateaux providing easy access to the restored Chateaux of Beynac, Castelnaud, Marqueysac, Feyrac and Millandes. Plus 30,000 year old cave paintings at Font de Gaume, Les Ezyies and Lescaux. History within easy reach.
