East Boothbay Cottage Rental Photos and Description

5 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 2.5 Baths + Outdoor Shower, Sleeps 12-14)

(Note: there is a link to additional photos near the bottom of this site.) Having rented over 40 cottages in the Boothbay Region before owning one, I developed a pretty good sense of what makes for a perfect Maine cottage experience. It requires being on the water with a wrap-around porch and panoramic views of the ocean. A large private pier and deep water floating dock is a must, along with a well maintained mooring. It should have great furniture and a fieldstone fireplace with seasoned firewood provided. It should have all the right stuff in the kitchen, from a lobster pot to a French press; and lots of old, thick china. You need a mud room with a washer/dryer. And a grilling area, preferably with more than one grill. It should have a big dining room table with ocean views, along with a good sound system for music that is blue-toothed and will accommodate iPhones, etc. It should come with a quality flat screen TV than can be closed in a wooden cabinet for those who desire an electronic holiday! Times being what they are, you need cable and wireless WifFi. You need great matresses with old dressers and ceiling fans. One of the bathrooms should have a clawfoot tub. And an outdoor shower with hot water would round things out nicely. The house should be big enough for several families with places for children to hang out and things for them to do. WELCOME TO THE OWL'S NEST! We believe It is the perfect Maine cottage. Moreover, Down East Magazine recently ranked the 10 prettiest villages in Maine: Boothbay Harbor #2, Damariscotta #3, and Wiscasset #4. The Owl's Nest is located in the midst of all three!

FIRST FLOOR: Comfortable living room with oversized fieldstone fireplace (wood stacked in barn) and adjoining dining area with spectacular ocean views. Anderson windows with invisible screens and French doors surround the front and sides of house which overlooks the mouth of Damariscotta River to Seal Cove, South Bristol and Rutherford Island (Christmas Cove). Large covered front porch with recess lighting. Old fashioned pantry between dining area and kitchen that was outfitted by my sister (caterer and professional chef). Mudroom off kitchen with washer/dryer and half bath. Flat screen TV with cable and DVD, iPod station, Wi-Fi, and bookshelf filled with classic DVD movies and contemporary books, games, and jigsaw puzzles.

SECOND FLOOR: Three bedrooms, two in front with ocean views and covered porch in between. Bedroom 1: king sleigh bed with pillow top mattress, two dressers and closet. Bedroom 2: queen sleigh bed with pillow top mattress, dresser and closet. Bedroom 3: double bed with pillow top mattress, and dresser. All bedrooms have new thermostat controlled baseboard heat to knock chill off if necessary. Two full baths, one with clawfoot tub with linen shower curtain. Private office with great work space and ocean view.

THIRD FLOOR: Kids paradise with crow’s nest ocean view. Two bedrooms, with four built-in single beds, separated by a common area with board games, flat screen TV and DVD. There is also a futon in the common area, as well as LL Bean cot with mattress, bringing total number able to sleep on third floor to seven. Entire floor is carpeted with padding to muffle sound. Free-standing stainless steel fans for each room.

BARN: Two single sleigh beds with pillow top mattresses in loft area with wooded ocean view. Seasoned firewood, and Weber charcoal grills stored in barn. Also a great place to keep bicycles.

BOATHOUSE: Where all the action is at night, on the tournament grade German ping pong table, or turn the music up and make it a dancehall! A unique and special place where kids can entertain themselves or adults can spend time with children into the wee hours of the night.

OUTSIDE: Asphalt drive brings you through the trees to face the house with easy access; also have separate parking area adjacent to barn which prevents cars from being blocked in driveway. Total parking for approximately 8 vehicles. House is “grandfathered” in within 50 feet of water with easy walk down to wide pier with benches, chairs, table, boathouse, and deep water dock with swimming ladder. Well protected mooring ball chained to 2,500 lb. block. Also have access to half bath off mudroom from outside. Lastly, and perhaps the most popular item on the property, the outdoor “naked” shower with hot water, surrounded by forest with ocean view.

DISTANCES: Walk to our amazing general store for coffee, tea, homemade pastries, hot breakfast, or breakfast pizza to go; also available: Wi-Fi, Boothbay Register, Boston Globe, New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Walk or take boat to Lobsterman’s Wharf for drinks/dining inside or out. Five minutes by boat to Christmas Cove and classic Coveside Inn for drinks/dinner. A public boat ramp is nearby, as well as Ocean Point Marina for fuel, ice, etc., and Hodgdon Yachts where “heirloom boats” have been built for nearly two centuries. Short drive to Linekin Preserve (138 acres, 2.75 miles hiking trails), or Ocean Point Loop - one of the prettiest walks in America. Five minutes to bustling Boothbay Harbor for grocery store, restaurants, shopping, bookstore, library, art galleries, botanical garden, and regular concert series. Within one hour (easy day trips) are extensive hiking, antique shops, and more art galleries.

BOATS/BIKES: If you have a boat you are welcome to tie it up to our dock and/or mooring ball (2500 lb.). We have about 8 feet of water at low tide. We also have a freshwater hose on the dock. Currently, the nearest power boat rental place that I am aware of is in Brunswick (New Meadows Marina). You can rent kayaks in BBH (Tital Transit Kayak Company), as well as bikes. Roads in Boothbay Region are narrow and winding; however, you will find that East Boothbay probably has the friendliest bike routes in the area.

SAFETY: As part of 13 month renovation, the fireplace and chimney were completely removed and replaced with current fieldstone fireplace. All wiring was replaced and brought to code with smoke alarms installed on every floor. You will find it nice to be in classic Maine cottage, over 100 years old, with completely modern wiring system, including recess lighting, dimmer switches, ceiling fans, and exterior lights (house, barn, boathouse and dock), controlled from interior panels.

CHARLES KURALT’S AMERICA: In his 1995 classic, Charles Kuralt wrote about his 12 favorite places in America. In the August chapter, he wrote about Boothbay Harbor: 'Then, with no plan, I’d go out into the day, on foot down to the docks, or by car along the coast, happy just to be there. Each day I’d feel a little more of Maine soaking into my bones.' If that’s what you have in mind for vacation, the Owl’s Nest might be the right cottage for you.

You provide linens which are arranged for through our agent including sheets and towels. Beds are made up clean when you arrive.

Why The Owner chose Boothbay Harbor Area

Our grandfather retired many years ago to a farm on John’s Bay. For that reason, my family has vacationed in mid-coast Maine since I was born in 1960. All told, I have probably stayed in 40 rental cottages from Southport Island over to New Harbor and out to Monhegan Island. Along the way I could not help but develop a pretty good sense of what a Maine cottage should be, so by the time we began looking for our own place, I knew what I wanted. In 2009, we first saw the Owl’s Nest, still owned and originally constructed in 1907 by the Gimbel family of Gimbel & Sons fame in Boothbay Harbor. From the moment we walked onto the property, we knew that we had found the perfect place. There is something about the property that evokes a very visceral emotion. It starts with its location, among the prettiest villages in Maine. The cottage is secluded but seemingly a perfect distance from anything that you might care to do. The trees certainly make a contribution. I don't know about you, but I love looking out through trees over the water. There is a barn and a boathouse with a disco ball! As for the cottage, being over 100 years old, it required a rather extensive renovation with the challenge being to blend the new construction with the old features without compromising the house’s character. With the help and guidance of a very talented contractor (Neal Groton), we believe we got it right. It truly is the perfect Maine cottage. Cheers, Bob Dodge

A great stay in Maine

  • 5 of 5

We had a girlfriends reunion at this beautiful Maine home and I can't say enough about the comfort and location of this charming waterfront cottage. We had plenty of space to spread out, a great kitchen equipped with everything that you could possibly need, a wonderfully wide wrapped porch where we spent hours enjoying our morning coffee, having evening cocktails, watching the boats go by, and catching up with old friends. The Owl's Nest has been very well thought out and provides every comfort for you to enjoy coastal Maine at it's best. The home is "tucked in" to enjoy all the privacy that you would need but close enough for walking to the charming general store where the breakfast pizza is so delicious. We enjoyed fishing, shopping and dining in the quaint downtown area, relaxing walks throughout Boothbay, cooking in the great kitchen, and warm cozy fires during the cool evenings of May. And, our weather was awesome so it made for a perfect week for making great memories. We all loved it and want to come back with our families. Next time though, we will be enjoying the boathouse... having ping pong tournaments and dancing under the disco ball.... just love that touch! Thank you, Bob, for the gracious comfort of your home for your guests.

Another amazing summer

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much to Bobby and The Owl's Nest. For the last four years, my family has been coming to the Owl's Nest for our summer family vacation. With so many bedrooms, it's easy to split up the cost amongst the whole family. I love the location! Full waterfront access, a floating dock for swimming, and a boathouse with ping pong table for dance parties and ping pong show downs. I wish we had a boat to complete the picture. If you have access to a trailerable boat, I highly recommend bring it! I'm sure there's so much more to explore if you have a little get-about.

Great Family Gathering at Owl's Nest

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 11 (8 adults and 3 grandchildren) spent a lovely week in East Boothbay at Owl's Nest enjoying the wonderful wrap around porch, spacious living area, great dock for kayak launching and lobsters, lobsters and more. We had sleeping space for everyone but we had hoped to take advantage of the beds upstairs in the barn but had no takers. With the only bathrooms being in the house, nighttime trips down the barn's staircase in darkness was not appealing. Although we had warmer than usual temperatures, sleeping was quite comfortable with the numerous fans. Owl's Nest was well-equipped for cooking and grilling with necessary tools and appliances. Walking to the General Store and just exploring the area by foot or car was great fun -- beautiful sunsets, fog rolling off the water in the morning, trips to nearby islands, Botanical Gardens and more. Prior to our arrival all our questions were answered quickly and easily. Owl's Nest made our visit to Boothbay most enjoyable and comfortable.

Owl's Nest

  • 4 of 5

Loved the house--would have preferred if it had had a bedroom on the first floor as the steps were not easy to go up and down for an older person. Bathroom situation is not ideal as it needs one on the third floor and a nicer one on the first floor. But overall the house was great and we enjoyed our visit there.

Perfect place for our last "hurrah of summer"

  • 5 of 5

The Owl's Nest was the perfect place for our family of 8--4 grandparents, 2 children, and 2 grandchildren. The expansive porch was the perfect setting for our morning cup of coffee as we watched the fishermen check their lobster traps and a glass of wine in the evening as we watched the sun set. We fished (our grandson caught a lobster on his fishing line) , played ping pong, made smores by the fireplace, walked to the East Boothbay General Store for doughnuts each morning, and simply soaked in the beauty of our surroundings. It is the quintessential Maine cottage with every amenity needed to have a fun filled week--comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen, and a perfect location for easy access into Boothbay.

THE PERFECT MAINE VACATION

  • 5 of 5

If I had to close my eyes and dream up the perfect Maine cottage it would hands down be the "Owl's Nest". The minute we pulled up we knew! Everything is just as it should be here. This was by far the best cottage we have ever stayed in. It's got it all and we have stayed in many cottages in this area. As soon as we walked in I knew!!! Relaxing on the fabulous wrap around porch while the kids are fishing on the dock or playing ping pong in the boathouse has to be the best of both worlds. Sleeping was incredible. Beds are super comfortable. It's much more than your typical

cottage. It's truly magical!!! We will absolutely be returning every year! We can't wait!!!
