About the Property
5 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 2.5 Baths + Outdoor Shower, Sleeps 12-14)
FIRST FLOOR: Comfortable living room with oversized fieldstone fireplace (wood stacked in barn) and adjoining dining area with spectacular ocean views. Anderson windows with invisible screens and French doors surround the front and sides of house which overlooks the mouth of Damariscotta River to Seal Cove, South Bristol and Rutherford Island (Christmas Cove). Large covered front porch with recess lighting. Old fashioned pantry between dining area and kitchen that was outfitted by my sister (caterer and professional chef). Mudroom off kitchen with washer/dryer and half bath. Flat screen TV with cable and DVD, iPod station, Wi-Fi, and bookshelf filled with classic DVD movies and contemporary books, games, and jigsaw puzzles.
SECOND FLOOR: Three bedrooms, two in front with ocean views and covered porch in between. Bedroom 1: king sleigh bed with pillow top mattress, two dressers and closet. Bedroom 2: queen sleigh bed with pillow top mattress, dresser and closet. Bedroom 3: double bed with pillow top mattress, and dresser. All bedrooms have new thermostat controlled baseboard heat to knock chill off if necessary. Two full baths, one with clawfoot tub with linen shower curtain. Private office with great work space and ocean view.
THIRD FLOOR: Kids paradise with crow’s nest ocean view. Two bedrooms, with four built-in single beds, separated by a common area with board games, flat screen TV and DVD. There is also a futon in the common area, as well as LL Bean cot with mattress, bringing total number able to sleep on third floor to seven. Entire floor is carpeted with padding to muffle sound. Free-standing stainless steel fans for each room.
BARN: Two single sleigh beds with pillow top mattresses in loft area with wooded ocean view. Seasoned firewood, and Weber charcoal grills stored in barn. Also a great place to keep bicycles.
BOATHOUSE: Where all the action is at night, on the tournament grade German ping pong table, or turn the music up and make it a dancehall! A unique and special place where kids can entertain themselves or adults can spend time with children into the wee hours of the night.
OUTSIDE: Asphalt drive brings you through the trees to face the house with easy access; also have separate parking area adjacent to barn which prevents cars from being blocked in driveway. Total parking for approximately 8 vehicles. House is “grandfathered” in within 50 feet of water with easy walk down to wide pier with benches, chairs, table, boathouse, and deep water dock with swimming ladder. Well protected mooring ball chained to 2,500 lb. block. Also have access to half bath off mudroom from outside. Lastly, and perhaps the most popular item on the property, the outdoor “naked” shower with hot water, surrounded by forest with ocean view.
DISTANCES: Walk to our amazing general store for coffee, tea, homemade pastries, hot breakfast, or breakfast pizza to go; also available: Wi-Fi, Boothbay Register, Boston Globe, New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Walk or take boat to Lobsterman’s Wharf for drinks/dining inside or out. Five minutes by boat to Christmas Cove and classic Coveside Inn for drinks/dinner. A public boat ramp is nearby, as well as Ocean Point Marina for fuel, ice, etc., and Hodgdon Yachts where “heirloom boats” have been built for nearly two centuries. Short drive to Linekin Preserve (138 acres, 2.75 miles hiking trails), or Ocean Point Loop - one of the prettiest walks in America. Five minutes to bustling Boothbay Harbor for grocery store, restaurants, shopping, bookstore, library, art galleries, botanical garden, and regular concert series. Within one hour (easy day trips) are extensive hiking, antique shops, and more art galleries.
BOATS/BIKES: If you have a boat you are welcome to tie it up to our dock and/or mooring ball (2500 lb.). We have about 8 feet of water at low tide. We also have a freshwater hose on the dock. Currently, the nearest power boat rental place that I am aware of is in Brunswick (New Meadows Marina). You can rent kayaks in BBH (Tital Transit Kayak Company), as well as bikes. Roads in Boothbay Region are narrow and winding; however, you will find that East Boothbay probably has the friendliest bike routes in the area.
SAFETY: As part of 13 month renovation, the fireplace and chimney were completely removed and replaced with current fieldstone fireplace. All wiring was replaced and brought to code with smoke alarms installed on every floor. You will find it nice to be in classic Maine cottage, over 100 years old, with completely modern wiring system, including recess lighting, dimmer switches, ceiling fans, and exterior lights (house, barn, boathouse and dock), controlled from interior panels.
CHARLES KURALT’S AMERICA: In his 1995 classic, Charles Kuralt wrote about his 12 favorite places in America. In the August chapter, he wrote about Boothbay Harbor: 'Then, with no plan, I’d go out into the day, on foot down to the docks, or by car along the coast, happy just to be there. Each day I’d feel a little more of Maine soaking into my bones.' If that’s what you have in mind for vacation, the Owl’s Nest might be the right cottage for you.

Why the Owner Chose Boothbay, ME, USA:
Our grandfather retired many years ago to a farm on John’s Bay. For that reason, my family has vacationed in mid-coast Maine since I was born in 1960. All told, I have probably stayed in 40 rental cottages from Southport Island over to New Harbor and out to Monhegan Island. Along the way I could not help but develop a pretty good sense of what a Maine cottage should be, so by the time we began looking for our own place, I knew what I wanted. In 2009, we first saw the Owl’s Nest, still owned and originally constructed in 1907 by the Gimbel family of Gimbel & Sons fame in Boothbay Harbor. From the moment we walked onto the property, we knew that we had found the perfect place. There is something about the property that evokes a very visceral emotion. It starts with its location, among the prettiest villages in Maine. The cottage is secluded but seemingly a perfect distance from anything that you might care to do. The trees certainly make a contribution. I don't know about you, but I love looking out through trees over the water. There is a barn and a boathouse with a disco ball! As for the cottage, being over 100 years old, it required a rather extensive renovation with the challenge being to blend the new construction with the old features without compromising the house’s character. With the help and guidance of a very talented contractor (Neal Groton), we believe we got it right. It truly is the perfect Maine cottage. Cheers, Bob Dodge
