Erehwon Retreat Bungalow: Hark Back to a Simpler Time

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,190 sq. ft.
Property type bungalow
Minimum Stay 2 - 6 nights

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths. sleeps 6

We live in a world where most things are mass produced. Hark back to a period when life was simpler, time moved slower, when we made something by hand, when craftsman left a part of themselves. So, enjoy our ceramic art collection, antiques, our tribute to women's fashion. As a guest recently said, "last Christmas our host left us a frozen, mass produced pound cake and you treated us to Viennese Apple Strudel and Champaign. Erehwon is a redhead is a sea of blondes." Old Seminole Heights has a romantic history that matches its arts and crafts era architecture, Erehwon Retreat welcomes you to immerse yourself in quiet, history and Florida sunshine. We're just 3 miles from Downtown, 4 m to Busch Gardens and Raymond James Stadium, 5 m to the Tampa Convention Center and 7 miles to USF and Moffitt Cancer Center. But given the areas 90 year old tree canopy you don't hear the city.

Step through the front door and into a world of 1920's elegance when life was simpler and time moved slower. Close your eyes as you sit on the expansive wrap-around porch and you can almost hear the whir of a Model T rambling down the road or a neighbor stopping by for a chat. In the 1920s, the bungalow was in its heyday and today we are located in the center of a national, state and local recognized historic district.

From the minute you walk in the front door, you’ll notice each room has been lovingly restored to the 1920's, with slag glass lamps, touches from the arts and craft period including original pendant lights. The built-in bookshelves, next to the massive fireplace, contain all the Harvard Classics and the complete works of Shakespeare for your reading pleasure.

Even with all nostalgic features, you’ll still get modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, washer and dryer, dishwasher, off-street parking and light housekeeping every third day.

When it comes time to eat, head to the gorgeous and well-stocked kitchen where you’ll always find all the basics for a quick snack or gourmet meal. We stock the pantry and fridge with cereal, pancake mix, real maple syrup, spices, butter, milk, Florida OJ, tea, coffee and more.

The thoughtful touches continue into the bathroom, where you’ll find towel warmers and luxurious custom-made Erewhon Retreat tea olive soap made from the plants found around the home.

At night, lay your head down on the plush Queen hotel grade mattresses and fall asleep on luxurious Egyptian cotton sheets. Choose from either of the queen bedrooms, one with ensuite that includes a tub and shower. There is a second, large master bath, also with tub and shower. We offer a pull out couch in the den as well.

You are surrounded by a lush Florida native plant garden. Meander through the well-kept pine straw paths, smelling and enjoying the vibrant colors of the numerous native Florida plants. Grab a book and find a spot of shade under the 90-year-old camphor trees and laurel oaks. In the early evening hours, guests of both the cottage and the bungalow often gather on the deck, swapping stories of the day and enjoying the company of the property cat, Thomas. (who is never permitted into our Rental Properties).

If you prefer quieter entertainment, curl up in the leather chair with a good book or one of the many American Bungalow magazines found around the cottage. Or truly unwind and soothe any weary muscles with a Swedish massage; we have a massage therapist that makes house calls for our guests.

Part of Tampa’s first suburb, Old Seminole Heights, Erehwon Retreat sits near numerous restaurants, pubs and shops and and just 15 minutes to the airport. Our property is ideal for a weekend getaway, long-term stay and everything in between. We've welcomed guests for over eight years and perfected indulgence. Erehwon Retreat is not some " sideline or second hustle." We are committed to service and exceptional standards.

This arts and craft bungalow is 1578 sq-ft interior with 12' ft ceilings, recently refinished original heart pine floors, Low Voc paints, full attic insulation, all new wiring, appliances, new 2016 AC/Heat pump, drapes in both bedrooms and dining room, and roman blinds in the living room. Living and dining rooms are open to one another, separated by a curved arch. A classic swinging door opens to a kitchen with 4-burner gas range, EnergyStar dishwasher and refrigerator/freezer.

DUE TO THE POPULARITY AND FREQUENT RETURN VISITS DURING HIGH SEASON (Dec 23-April 14), we primarily rent in 7 and 14 night visits. Returning guests may book 21 nights. MONTHLY RATES ONLY AVAILABILE MAY 1-14 DECEMBER.

Erehwon Retreat is licensed under the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation/Division of Hotels and Restaurants and registered with the Florida Department of Revenue and City of Tampa Business Tax Division.

Our properties are Pet and Smoke Free in consideration of future guests and possible allergy and pulmonary related illnesses.

When making an inquiry please take the time to tell us about yourself.

Our turn over day during High and Peak Season is Saturday. Between December 23 and April 30, due to the enormous interest in one and two week winter getaways when snowbirds books the winter season, we do not offer monthly stays or discounts.

Our couples/partner oriented home and its antique furnishings is ideal for adults. We welcome children but depending on the age of your children, may require the purchase of Damage Insurance. If you are visiting with children please include their ages in your reservation request. For monthly renters we also require the purchase of Damage Insurance. Occupancy laws and historic neighborhood density are strictly enforced.

About Henry Young, Jr.

Following a 45 year career in arts management serving such major cultural organizations as The Guthrie Theatre (Minneapolis) , The New York City Center Joffrey Ballet, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Cincinnati Ballet Company and DanceAspen and consulting with over 50 non profits, in retirement he chose to continue a life of service by expanding into hospitality and offering two authentic 1920’s vacation properties in Tampa's Old Seminole Heights.

I’ve been a sailor since turning a teenager. First sails were on New Jersey's the Toms River and Barnegat Bay and later the Conneticut River and Long Island Sound. During my military service in the US Navy service I was trained as a navigator which prepared me well for my family’s year long cruise of all of the Great Lakes, Eastern Seaboard and Bahamas Islands our Columbus 500 celebration.

Like concierges around the world, he know the ins and outs of traveling. He's traveled to Iceland, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Austria, Germany, Belarus, Bulgaria, Greece (Crete, Rhodes, Hydra), Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Cuba. Since reaching semi-retirement, he's hiked in over 100 Florida State or County parks and preserves.

Henry Young, Jr. purchased this bungalow in 2007

Why Henry Young, Jr. chose Seminole Heights

Just five years following the end of WW II, my and I family lived in a 1920’s Bungalow on Las Robles Ave, Pasadena, CA. Because this home design is part of my DNA, I developed a fascination with the period. In my adult years, my late father in law owned a 1923 Model T. Keeping to the period I restored a 1923 Crosby Wianno Senior, a knockabout sloop famous for the number of Kennedy family members who raced this class off of Hyannis, MA. So when it came to preparing for retirement, my now late mother reminded me that restoring a bungalow from the twenties, the decade that changed America, would be a wonderful post career project. I selected this home following extensive research on the early development of Tampa, the rush of tourism that began post WW I.

What makes this bungalow unique

Erehwon Retreat is landscaped with native plants which have been growing in Florida for thousands of years without human intervention. We are committed to providing the natural food, shelter, and nesting plants of local wildlife. Visiting in fall and spring, you will see hundreds of birds, butterflies, and a wide variety of crucially important insect pollinators looking for our native plants for predictable sources of nectar, berries, insects and firm branches in which to hide their nests.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Your unique home is a beautiful and relaxing base from which to explore the Tampa Bay area. Your suggestions were extremely reliable. We had 2 excellent dinners at The Refinery and enjoyed seeign Quartet at the marvelous Tampa Theater. So much to do. So little time.

Our suggestions for future guests? Tampa and St. Petersburg both have excellent art museums, but the area has parks and preserves that should not be missed. We enjoyed very much Hillsborough River State Park dating from the Civilian Conservation Corps era and the present day effort to preserve the area, the Robinson Preserve in Braedenton. For guest not up to an easy hike in the woods or a stroll along Tampa Bay, try a drive to a charming rural restaurant outside Dade City called Pearl in the Grove. Where has all the time gone to? Oh well, we;ll try to come back some other time. Cheers,

A little oasis!

  • 5 of 5

A thoughtfully prepared, stylishly furnished and decorated bungalow offering comfortable accommodation. Henry’s extras made it more like home. We appreciated the food supplies, toiletries, DVD collection and useful tips supplied by our friendly host and enjoyed sitting out on the adjoining deck and front porch. A relaxing stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks Deb. When I was a young boy, my family moved to LA and for three months we lived in the Hotel Figurora in downtown LA beginning in 1949. The Fig built in 1920 by eleven women was ground-breaking; never before had there been an establishment of its kind available exclusively to women—owned, managed and financed entirely by women. According to the hotel’s website, at the time it was built, Hotel Figueroa was one of the largest women-owned real estate investments in the United States. I was fascinated by two things about the Fig, riding up and down the elevator, manually operated in those days and that the top nine floors were restricted exclusively to businesswomen and their children, while the first three floors were made available to men and their families. So very early on, I gained great interest in the period of the 1920's and of a style of hospitality that insured women traveling along felt safe and comfortable.

Historicky naprosto věrné zrekonstruována nemovitost z roku 1923 včetně vybavení!

  • 5 of 5

Cozy, warm, friendly, and hospitable bungalow

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay, a six week stay, at Henry’s Erehwon Retreat bungalow. My wife was having chemo-radiation treatments at The Moffitt Cancer Center and we wanted a place that would be more like home, safe, and away from the hustle bustle. Henry’s bungalow seemed to be what we were looking for and as it turned out it was. The bungalow was 15 minutes to the cancer center and downtown, as well as within minutes to route 275.

The bungalow was cozy, warmly decorated, clean, and Henry was very hospitable. He met us there the first day to show us through the bungalow and explain some of the history of the house. After he left we were pleasantly surprised to find the refrigerator was populated with orange juice, milk, and other items. The cabinets were filled with spices, oils, and vinegar for your use. The best was the chocolate beside each bed.

The neighborhood is in a Tampa historic district and we found the neighborhood to be friendly and safe for going on walks. Sitting on the porch, reminded us of our younger days at home – when people sat on the porch and neighbors walked by and visited.

Henry provided a binder full of information about the area, things to do, and places of interest. We appreciated that they provide housekeeping, that was something we didn’t have to worry about while taking treatments.

Henry is very responsive to any and all questions – a text is answered within minutes and he is usually there. This was the perfect comfortable place for our stay.

Thanks again Henry.

Owner's Response: Thanks Roger, Hard to believe you've only been gone for three days and in that time we had lovely guests from Manchester, England in for the Rod Stewart Concert and tonight a lovely family arrived from Prague. So said another way, not enough time to consider how much one misses the friendships made along the way, AND a special thanks to Judy for sharing that magnificent pot roast. Very happy that you found the Bungalow to work so well for your needs. I hope when your thoughts turn to Tampa, we'll see you two back for a fun visit. Wishing only the best.

Our Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

We spent the entire month of April at Erehwon Retreat. Since it was quite a length of stay, we wanted a place that was comfortable and convenient to areas around Tampa. Since our youngest son and family live in Tampa, we were about 10-15 mins. from them.

Erehwon Retreat met our needs and more. It is a lovely house and had the conveniences we needed to live comfortably. The kitchen was well stocked with all the appliances one needs to prepare meals, if needed. The beds were most comfortable and afforded a wonderful night's sleep.

The front porch with the swing and chairs was always an option when trying to find a place to read or just watch the world go by. The back patio was a nice place to sit and enjoy the breeze among the big camphor trees. Thomas, the cat, would show up often to receive a little attention or just sit and enjoy the breeze, as well.

We couldn't have asked for a more caring and helpful owner than Henry. He was very interested in providing for our every need. The house received light cleaning and changing of towels every third day - and the bed linens were changed weekly. We were most impressed with the quality of the towels and linens.

Henry was most valuable in providing information as well as sharing about his travels and past work. We always enjoyed our conversations with him.

Hopefully, we can return to Erehwon Retreat in the future. We know it will be lovingly taken care of and offer many travelers a home away-from home.

Owner's Response: Really appreciate your taking the time to write such a complete review. I'm always sad to see guests depart, particularly those who spend a month or two with us. Really enjoyed our periodic chats as well as the opportunity to meet your son, daughter in law and two grand children. The Bungalow was a terrific in close location for you to reach your son in Carrollwood, Thomas sends his best "MEOW." Best and thanks, Henry

Wonderful stay at Erehwon Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the Erehwon Retreat. The bungalow was as pictured, a beautiful bungalow. It was clean and the kitchen was stocked with basic necessities which was very nice. It was located convenient to many attractions especially Steinbrenner Field and was in a nice neighborhood. The owner was very helpful with recommendations for restaurants and attractions. I would definitely recommend this rental to everyone and also the price was reasonable. We will definitely stay again whenever we come to Tampa.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for taking the time to post a review. I was so pleased to have you, your husband and daughter were guests. Although the Bungalow operates at 78% occupancy for the year, we never take our guests for granted and remain committed to make those extra efforts that make ErehwonRetreat home. Thanks for mentioning in our guest book about how much you enjoyed the Apple Strudel. If you want a world class German bakery in Chicago, send me a note and I will happy to pass along who we use for Christmas Stollen for our special Christmas and New Years week guests.
