About the property

The StoneHouse at Duck Lake is a unique property built by Montana songwriter, David Walburn, as an exclusive retreat for outdoor enthusiasts and the eco-minded traveler. It is a private residence that is nestled between Montana's finest panoramic views of Glacier National Park, Chief Mountain, (sacred among the Blackfeet Tribe, standing alone at an impressive 9,080' elevation) across to the open vistas of the Cut Bank Plains.

The wildlife is over the top! Loons, elk, moose, bear, grebe, sage grouse, hawks, badgers, American pelican, owls, foxes, wolves.... well, you get the idea.

The StoneHouse was designed and built using green building materials to enhance its durability and energy efficiency against the wild eastern Montana climate. After a day of outdoor adventure come inside to the warmth of a wood stove and enjoy reading a good book with your favorite beverage.

The StoneHouse has two levels both with separate entrances and parking. (The house is never rented to two separate parties at the same time except upon request. Even if its just a party of two you get entire house) The upper level has two bedrooms, full bath, kitchen and living area. One of the upstairs bedrooms has an additional built-in bunk bed for 2 more single sleepers

(kids or adults!).

The kitchen is fully equipped with all new appliances; refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and kitchen range. We have all the kitchen amenities to create a wonderful meal for family and friends.

The lower level has one bedroom, full bath, galley kitchen and living area which includes two bunks for extra guests.

The StoneHouse is one of the nicest vacation rental properties around Duck Lake.

The StoneHouse is uniquely located on a beautiful scenic ridge with outstanding views, plenty of privacy and lake frontage.

If you are looking for a unique Montana vacation rental with access to real Montana adventures, look no further than the StoneHouse at Duck Lake.

About The Owner

David Walburn - Montana Singer•Songwriter, avid outdoor enthusiast, fly fisherman, hunter, hiker, skier, and homesteader. From 1999 to 2014, I work at The historic Many Glacier Hotel as the resident musician, performing acoustic concerts for Glacier Park guests. I have lived in Montana for over 24 years and it's here that I feel most at home. Four of those summers were spent working nights performing and the days building the Stonehouse. It has been my mission to build something unique that people will enjoy, appreciate and, hopefully, wholly experience this amazing landscape with its vast and beautiful wilderness. This is definitely not your cookie cutter vacation rental. It is meant for those who have an adventurous spirit and a love of the American west.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why The Owner chose Glacier Country

We have been summer campers on Montana's east side for over 10 years and have fallen in love with its rugged beauty and wild landscape. We created a space - a travelers rest - that blends with this landscape. After I finished, I realized that this space should be shared by those adventure travelers who want a different lodging experience other than the usual motel/hotel. It is meant for those who want to explore off the main highway, can unplug from modern life for awhile and appreciate the native country and culture of Montana.

What makes this house unique

Our family enjoys waking up at The StoneHouse wondering what the day's adventure will bring. We have caught mammoth rainbows on a fly rod, rode the float tube on endless quests searching for the perfect swimming hole, took the spotting scope for bird watching, bear spotting, and star gazing. We have gone on endless hikes into Glacier, had some banner kite flying days. In the winter we have trekked in snow shoes, sledded across the Duck's Head, skijored, ice fished, wrote kids songs, talked with owls and star gazed for hours, even experiencing the Northern Lights on occasion. What will your adventure be?

Perfect place to explore the east side of Glacier National Park

  • 5 of 5

I was a little bit nervous when I booked the Stonehouse because of how remote it seemed. We actually found its location to be perfect. We were 10 min from the Many Glacier entrance, 20 min from Going to the Sun road in St Mary's, 50 min from Two Medicine entrance, and 1 hr from Waterton- Glacier. We stayed 4 days and that wasn't enough. Wish we stayed the full week. The house itself is very nice and has the most beautiful view I've ever seen. David was wonderful to work with. We will definitely be back.

Million dollar view! Great owners!

  • 5 of 5

The view was worth a MILLION dollars! The owner was fantastic with his quick response time and wonderful hospitality. The house was great and served as a perfect landing spot for our trip to the east side of Glacier National Park. I would definitely do stay at The StoneHouse again! Once again, I can't say how great the owner was with sharing his knowledge of the area and how beautiful this part of the country is.

Great location for day hiking in GNP

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the StoneHouse. The house is solidly constructed, very comfortable, and the decor was authentically Montana (not that I am any expert being a New Englander). I have traveled a lot for work and pleasure, but I don't think I have slept in a more comfortable bed away from home. The kitchen had everything we needed, and the rest of the house was well-stock with necessary supplies. The location is very quiet, which allows for a very restful sleep, especially after a long day hiking in the park.

WE LOVED THE STONEHOUSE. This is a beautiful house in a gorgeous part of the country. We hope to return in the future when we can spend more than a week.

Outstanding views and location!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4, all over the age of 16 found the upstairs area of The Stonehouse to meet our every need. We had access to the washing facilities downstairs allowing us to pack more efficiently. Our vacation goal was hiking in Glacier NP and this home was the perfect place for my 2 sons, my husband and me. David was a great help and easily accessible for any questions. It was as close to unplugged as we get and that made it even nicer. No TV, minimal wifi and cell service but enough to communicate with work and family if needed. Access to GNP was outstanding. We're early birds so we hit the trails early around 7:30 (no crowds and plenty of parking). The Stonehouse is located on the Eastern side and very close to both St Mary's and Many Glacier entrances. It's only about 45 mins to Waterton. We would usually finish our hikes around 2 allowing easy seating at any of the lodge dinning areas where the food is very good, especially Many Glacier. Then we would head back to The Stonehouse, rest, enjoy the Lake out back and then savor the beautiful GNP panoramic sunsets out front or through the outstanding picture windows in the house. We always felt connected to the beautiful setting of GNP. The house is well stocked, the bedding is comfortable and the shared single bathroom upstairs is large. The decor is tasteful. Reflecting on the trip, we all consider our stay and GNP experience our favorite of the several national park trips we've taken. GNP stole our hearts. The Stonehouse and David helped make that happen.

Keith & JoAnn's trip to GNP

  • 4 of 5

JoAnn & I loved The StoneHouse, it had everything that we needed.

The view of the mountains from the table was amazing.

While at the house we saw deer, coyote, magpies, & numerous other wildlife.

The location is convent to the different areas of GNP.

Going To The Sun Road is an amazing trip.

One day we went horseback riding at Many Glacier.

One day we went to Waterton Lakes National Park.

After a busy day traveling it was great getting into the very comfortable bed.

The only drawback was that the Wi-Fi was not available during our stay.

Thank You Dave for letting us use The STONEHOUSE for our trip to GNP.

Owner's Response: Keith and JoAnn, Thanks for choosing to stay at the StoneHouse. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. I didn't realize we hadn't turned the wifi back on after turning it off due to difficulties with previous guest using more than the allotted amount of data. We want our guest to feel free to call us at anytime with issues. I would have reinstated the service at that time had I known. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you during your stay. Please consider the StoneHouse for your next Montana adventure. David
