About the property

Lodge, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Bath, (Sleeps 10), 2 kitchens

The StoneHouse at Duck Lake is a unique property built by Montana songwriter, David Walburn, as an exclusive retreat for outdoor enthusiasts and the eco-minded traveler. It is a private residence that is nestled between Montana's finest panoramic views of Glacier National Park, Chief Mountain, (sacred among the Blackfeet Tribe, standing alone at an impressive 9,080' elevation) across to the open vistas of the Cut Bank Plains.

The wildlife is over the top! Loons, elk, moose, bear, grebe, sage grouse, hawks, badgers, American pelican, owls, foxes, wolves.... well, you get the idea.

The StoneHouse was designed and built using green building materials to enhance its durability and energy efficiency against the wild eastern Montana climate. After a day of outdoor adventure come inside to the warmth of a wood stove and enjoy reading a good book with your favorite beverage.

The StoneHouse has two levels both with separate entrances and parking. (The house is never rented to two separate parties at the same time except upon request. Even if its just a party of two you get entire house) The upper level has two bedrooms, full bath, kitchen and living area. One of the upstairs bedrooms has an additional built-in bunk bed for 2 more single sleepers

(kids or adults!).

The kitchen is fully equipped with all new appliances; refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and kitchen range. We have all the kitchen amenities to create a wonderful meal for family and friends.

The lower level has one bedroom, full bath, galley kitchen and living area which includes two bunks for extra guests.

The StoneHouse is one of the nicest vacation rental properties around Duck Lake.

The StoneHouse is uniquely located on a beautiful scenic ridge with outstanding views, plenty of privacy and lake frontage.

If you are looking for a unique Montana vacation rental with access to real Montana adventures, look no further than the StoneHouse at Duck Lake.

About The Owner

David Walburn - Montana Singer•Songwriter, avid outdoor enthusiast, fly fisherman, hunter, hiker, skier, and homesteader. From 1999 to 2014, I work at The historic Many Glacier Hotel as the resident musician, performing acoustic concerts for Glacier Park guests. I have lived in Montana for over 25 years and it's here that I feel most at home. Four of those summers were spent working nights performing and the days building the StoneHouse. It has been my mission to build something unique that people will enjoy, appreciate and, hopefully, wholly experience this amazing landscape with its vast and beautiful wilderness. This is definitely not your cookie cutter vacation rental. It is meant for those who have an adventurous spirit and a love of the American west.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why The Owner chose Glacier Country

We have been summer campers on Montana's east side for over 10 years and have fallen in love with its rugged beauty and wild landscape. We created a space - a travelers rest - that blends with this landscape. After I finished, I realized that this space should be shared by those adventure travelers who want a different lodging experience other than the usual motel/hotel. It is meant for those who want to explore off the main highway, can unplug from modern life for awhile and appreciate the native country and culture of Montana.

What makes this house unique

Our family enjoys waking up at The StoneHouse wondering what the day's adventure will bring. We have caught mammoth rainbows on a fly rod, rode the float tube on endless quests searching for the perfect swimming hole, took the spotting scope for bird watching, bear spotting, and star gazing. We have gone on endless hikes into Glacier, had some banner kite flying days. In the winter we have trekked in snow shoes, sledded across the Duck's Head, skijored, ice fished, wrote kids songs, talked with owls and star gazed for hours, even experiencing the Northern Lights on occasion. What will your adventure be?

Breathtaking Scenery, Quiet Solitude, & Proximity to Many Glacier

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at The Stonehouse, the first one being in 2013 with our then teenage daughter. We were initially drawn to The Stonehouse due to its close proximity to all the fabulous hiking trails around the Many Glacier area, the facilities to cook our own meals in light of the limited dining options, a washer & dryer for our hiking clothes, and some room to spread out. The Stonehouse offers all of that and so much more. What we've enjoyed most are the quiet solitude and the amazing views. The huge picture window in front of the dining table gives an outstanding view of the front range of Glacier National Park. Across the street is a pasture with a pond where there are cows and horses grazing. We've seen a variety of wildlife from the house, including a beautiful red fox trotting under the window one morning. Evening was our favorite time. The weather was very mild, so we pulled the Adirondack chairs from the back porch around to the front yard. Then along with our portable Bose speaker and a bottle of wine we would watch the the colors change as the sun set behind the mountains while enjoying the antics of the cows, who seemed to enjoy Country music...Merle Haggard was a favorite! If you are looking for a place to unplug and decompress from the hectic electronic world in which we live, this is it!

Good trip

  • 3 of 5

House is rustic. We had no wifi (he emailed a week or two prior to our stay and let us know that) and no gas fire pit (apparently it broke before our stay, which we discovered after we had arrived). The lake is VERY low, so the area by the lake is swampy with lots of bugs. Not a fishing or relaxing area, really. My son attempted to fish, and lost 2 lures. We drove to the public (I think) put in for boats that is about a half mile away and climbed over a dock or two to access a little island where we could fish. But it was not at all convenient or as we had hoped. For the price and the remote location, I was a little disappointed. The owner was friendly, but there were a lot of things that I wouldn't say were "as described" or as I had hoped. It is an easy drive to the park and provides beautiful scenery from the front - where there is no porch or real viewing point. I selected this property over an in the park hotel because of the availability of internet (which didn't happen) and for the easy access to the lake access and fire pit (which didn't happen). So overall, we were disappointed we did not end up staying in the park.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the honest review and we're sorry that your experience was a little disappointing. Wifi continues to be a challenge in our remote location with the best option for Verizon users to use their phones as a "hot-spot". That's the option we use when we stay there. There is wifi available in St. Mary's and we hope some affordable options become available to our area in the future. The dry weather this summer is leaving a lot of area lakes low and with the wildfire dangers and extreme heat, we sure need some moisture to fill those lakes up. We have also removed the fire-pit completely this summer due to the extreme Stage II conditions. Glad that you enjoyed the view out front. It is an amazing view into Glacier and Chief Mountain. We hope you got to experience some Glacier hiking, ate some wild huckleberries and drove the Going-To-The-Sun Highway. Again, we appreciate the honest comments and will do our best to remedy the concerns for future guests. Thanks for staying with us. David & JJ

What a great property with a gorgeous view!

  • 5 of 5

The Stonehouse is a really special place. The location was lovely; just close enough to easily get to the best hiking in Glacier National Park, or for a side-trip to Waterton - but also remote enough to be truly quiet and peaceful. The house is well-equipped and comfortable, the beds are cosy, and the view of the GNP mountains is spectacular. We enjoyed a special family dinner in the front yard, and our own July 4th fireworks over the lake. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thanks to David for such a great place to land when staying on the East side of the park.

Remote but Great Location for East Side of Glacier NP

  • 4 of 5

Nine of us came to hike in Glacier National Park and booked the StoneHouse for it's location to the east side of the park and for the capacity (advertised for up to 10). We found the main floor to be a delight with the beautiful view and the rooms and furnishings as shown in the pictures. The downstairs looks to be a work in progress: the bedroom and bathroom are finished, but the rest of the downstairs looks like it needs a little more work to be complete. Wasn't too bad (one outlet did not work, some light fixtures and the like still to be installed, etc.). The two single beds downstairs were cots with foam on them, but I guess they were adequate.

If the upstairs is mostly/all what you will use, then five stars!

When completed this place will be great!

Stunning!

  • 5 of 5

Searching for one word to describe our stay at the Stone House...stunning would be it. When my wife pulled back the curtains on the big picture window overlooking Glacier National Park it literally took my breath. We've stayed at a number of VRBO places throughout Colorado but nothing rivals this view! The house itself is immaculate - amply apportioned and distinctively details. David's artistic touches are evident everywhere you look...from the beautiful photographic art adorning the walls to the intricate details in the cabinetry and wormwood flooring. Our 6 night stay was comfortable and relaxing. Loved taking walks down the gravel road, relaxing lakeside and just staring at the beauty of the glacial peaks literally at our back door. The remoteness of the location added to the sense of peace and quiet. Quaint small towns nearby provided for unique dining, shopping and practical conveniences - but it was the draw of the majestic mountains that captivated us and kept drawing us higher up and farther in. For a relaxing and beautiful getaway location we could not recommend the Stone House more highly.

Perfect place to explore the east side of Glacier National Park

  • 5 of 5

I was a little bit nervous when I booked the Stonehouse because of how remote it seemed. We actually found its location to be perfect. We were 10 min from the Many Glacier entrance, 20 min from Going to the Sun road in St Mary's, 50 min from Two Medicine entrance, and 1 hr from Waterton- Glacier. We stayed 4 days and that wasn't enough. Wish we stayed the full week. The house itself is very nice and has the most beautiful view I've ever seen. David was wonderful to work with. We will definitely be back.
