About the property

Lodge, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Bath, (Sleeps 10), 2 kitchens

The StoneHouse at Duck Lake is a unique property built by Montana songwriter, David Walburn, as an exclusive retreat for outdoor enthusiasts and the eco-minded traveler. It is a private residence that is nestled between Montana's finest panoramic views of Glacier National Park, Chief Mountain, (sacred among the Blackfeet Tribe, standing alone at an impressive 9,080' elevation) across to the open vistas of the Cut Bank Plains.

The wildlife is over the top! Loons, elk, moose, bear, grebe, sage grouse, hawks, badgers, American pelican, owls, foxes, wolves.... well, you get the idea.

The StoneHouse was designed and built using green building materials to enhance its durability and energy efficiency against the wild eastern Montana climate. After a day of outdoor adventure come inside to the warmth of a wood stove and enjoy reading a good book with your favorite beverage.

The StoneHouse has two levels both with separate entrances and parking. (The house is never rented to two separate parties at the same time except upon request. Even if its just a party of two you get entire house) The upper level has two bedrooms, full bath, kitchen and living area. One of the upstairs bedrooms has an additional built-in bunk bed for 2 more single sleepers

(kids or adults!).

The kitchen is fully equipped with all new appliances; refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and kitchen range. We have all the kitchen amenities to create a wonderful meal for family and friends.

The lower level has one bedroom, full bath, galley kitchen and living area which includes two bunks for extra guests.

The StoneHouse is one of the nicest vacation rental properties around Duck Lake.

The StoneHouse is uniquely located on a beautiful scenic ridge with outstanding views, plenty of privacy and lake frontage.

If you are looking for a unique Montana vacation rental with access to real Montana adventures, look no further than the StoneHouse at Duck Lake.

About The Owner

David Walburn - Montana Singer•Songwriter, avid outdoor enthusiast, fly fisherman, hunter, hiker, skier, and homesteader. From 1999 to 2014, I work at The historic Many Glacier Hotel as the resident musician, performing acoustic concerts for Glacier Park guests. I have lived in Montana for over 25 years and it's here that I feel most at home. Four of those summers were spent working nights performing and the days building the StoneHouse. It has been my mission to build something unique that people will enjoy, appreciate and, hopefully, wholly experience this amazing landscape with its vast and beautiful wilderness. This is definitely not your cookie cutter vacation rental. It is meant for those who have an adventurous spirit and a love of the American west.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why The Owner chose Babb

We have been summer campers on Montana's east side for over 10 years and have fallen in love with its rugged beauty and wild landscape. We created a space - a travelers rest - that blends with this landscape. After I finished, I realized that this space should be shared by those adventure travelers who want a different lodging experience other than the usual motel/hotel. It is meant for those who want to explore off the main highway, can unplug from modern life for awhile and appreciate the native country and culture of Montana.

What makes this house unique

Our family enjoys waking up at The StoneHouse wondering what the day's adventure will bring. We have caught mammoth rainbows on a fly rod, rode the float tube on endless quests searching for the perfect swimming hole, took the spotting scope for bird watching, bear spotting, and star gazing. We have gone on endless hikes into Glacier, had some banner kite flying days. In the winter we have trekked in snow shoes, sledded across the Duck's Head, skijored, ice fished, wrote kids songs, talked with owls and star gazed for hours, even experiencing the Northern Lights on occasion. What will your adventure be?

Great location, stunning views of the mountains, accommodation great although downstairs a bit dark

  • 5 of 5

The Stone House was a ideal location and size for our group, 6 adults. It was well equiped and comfortable although lack of WiFi wasn't ideal. The kitchen was well fitted, although perhaps by a man! Due to our stay being so late in the season, and I think also because of the terrible forest fires they have had this summer there were very few cafes and restaurants open and very little food in the shops. Luckily the best food shop was in Babb (very friendly and helpful too) and so was virtually the only food joint open, the Cattle Baron, which we thoroughly recommend. Luckily we weren't there for the fishing as there was very little water in Duck Lake and many other places. Really enjoyed the CDs of the Owners music in the Stone House - it really set the scene for us Brits! We also had stunning weather!

Great views, great house! We really enjoyed our stay!

  • 4 of 5

The house met our needs perfectly. The beds were really confortable, we slep well in this quiet environment. We enjoyed the nice fireplace and the views. Only drawback was that the toilets needed some re-cleaning and some garbage was left in the baskets. Probably an oversight. The rest was perfect!

Far exceeded our expectations! And we were expecting a lot!

I cannot recommend The Stone House enough! I was recommending it on our trip to everyone who asked us about our accommodations (I even gave a tour of it to a couple we met on the trails the first day in the park) and I am recommending it to you now. Here is why:

1.) Location. Its on the East side of the park, 20 minutes from Many Glacier and on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The best trails in the park are on the East side. The best views of the park are on the East side. Less people make it to the East side. It is where you want to be if you want easy access, striking scenery and peace and quiet. Fishing. Its on Duck Lake so bring a fly rod and catch your fill of rainbow trout. Views. Enjoy a Big Sky Country sunrise over the lake from the front porch. Enjoy a Big Sky Country sunset over the 9000 ft. peaks that burst up from the plains and line the horizon on the backside of the cabin.

2.) Layout. The cabin is just what you would picture for Montana. Perfect to come home to after a long day in the park rather than being slotted into a hotel room. Beautiful on the inside and outside. Open floor plan. Easily sleeps 10 if you need it to. We were two couples and one took the upstairs and the other the down stairs which allowed for great privacy.

3.) Landlord. David Walburn was awesome from booking to check out. Always available to take my calls and answer any question I had. Super hospitable and willing to go the extra mile to make sure we had a great experience. Knows the area inside and out (set us up with a fishing guide on the reservation that was the best, ask for David Parsons).

Again. I cannot recommend it enough! This is the place to stay if you are wanting to take in all that Glacier has to offer.

Lovely stay, cozy home, and ideal location.

  • 5 of 5

It's not often you stay away from home and have enough pillows and quality bedding. The cabin views were stunning, the home itself was well equipped making our family and children all comfortable. Off the beaten path and very private, it was still easy to get to the St. Mary and Many Glacier entrances to the park. We would happily return to the Stone House.

Breathtaking Scenery, Quiet Solitude, & Proximity to Many Glacier

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at The Stonehouse, the first one being in 2013 with our then teenage daughter. We were initially drawn to The Stonehouse due to its close proximity to all the fabulous hiking trails around the Many Glacier area, the facilities to cook our own meals in light of the limited dining options, a washer & dryer for our hiking clothes, and some room to spread out. The Stonehouse offers all of that and so much more. What we've enjoyed most are the quiet solitude and the amazing views. The huge picture window in front of the dining table gives an outstanding view of the front range of Glacier National Park. Across the street is a pasture with a pond where there are cows and horses grazing. We've seen a variety of wildlife from the house, including a beautiful red fox trotting under the window one morning. Evening was our favorite time. The weather was very mild, so we pulled the Adirondack chairs from the back porch around to the front yard. Then along with our portable Bose speaker and a bottle of wine we would watch the the colors change as the sun set behind the mountains while enjoying the antics of the cows, who seemed to enjoy Country music...Merle Haggard was a favorite! If you are looking for a place to unplug and decompress from the hectic electronic world in which we live, this is it!

Owner's Response: We love the idea of you guys sitting out front with a bottle of wine, enjoying that mountain view while listening to Merle! What a perfect setting to enjoy the moment at the StoneHouse. Thanks for sharing your story with us and we look forward to hosting you again next year! PS: We also LOVE watching the fox that visits. He's so much fun to watch in the field.
