Overview

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Breathtaking water views of the mountains of Acadia across the Harbor, views over Lighthouse Island out to the open Ocean, and even views of tranquil Mill Stream. Every single room in this spacious cottage (including the bathrooms and even the attached garage!) has at least one water view; many rooms have two water views, and the views from the breezy screened sun porch are amazing! Located just steps down the street from the Bar Harbor ferry dock and within easy walking distance of the art galleries, antique stores and restaurants of the scenic village of Winter Harbor. Nearby bike and kayak rentals make this the perfect place to explore the Schoodic Loop of Acadia National Park - and the Park entrance is less than a half mile away!

There's a reason we call this 'The Cook's Cottage' - a large and well equipped kitchen is at the center of this 1893 home. First floor master bedroom suite with a twin bedroom adjacent to the living room AND a second floor master bedroom, plus two additional large bedrooms on the second floor. Two full bathrooms on the second floor, plus a half-bath on the first floor next to the living room. Spacious deck above garage, with access from upstairs MBR.

Why Douglas Greenwood chose Acadia

We purchased this cottage in 2010 because we love the Schoodic Peninsula. We have owned another home on Paul Bunyan Road in Corea since 2005.

What makes this house unique

Walk to the Winter Harbor - Bar Harbor Ferry and all the shops and galleries in Winter Harbor. Or enjoy the spectacular views from the 2nd floor deck.

Amazing location and comfortable home for a big group

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our stay at Cook's Cottage. We were traveling with another family, so there were 4 adults and 4 children. There was more than enough room for all of us to be comfortable. As a group, we spent the most time in the spacious sun room and on the deck, and we cooked several meals in the well-stocked kitchen. The house is exactly what we were looking for; not fussy or fancy, just comfortable and welcoming, and the owners were extremely easy to work with and quick to respond to our questions.

The location is perfect for exploring the coast of Maine. We took the ferry into Bar Harbor to do whale watching and sea kayaking, but most days we enjoyed exploring the Schoodic peninsula by biking and hiking. We rented bikes very close to Cook's Cottage and biked the loop around the Schoodic portion of Acadia. We also went farther north up the coast and visited the lobster towns of Jonesport and Beals, and did a fantastic hike on Wass Island Preserve.

Close to the house, we enjoyed meals at The Pickled Wrinkle, J.M. Gerrish, and Fisherman's Galley. The food was great, and we appreciated the friendliness of all the servers and their willingness to give us tips on the area. We also checked out the town library in a fantastic old building, the Five and Ten, and Littlefield art gallery on the corner of the street that Cook's Cottage is on.

We have stayed at many VRBO properties over the years, and Cook's Cottage probably ranks as the best. I hope to be back someday!

great views, peaceful setting, and room for the entire family

  • 5 of 5

Cook's Cottage is a great place to stay. We often have trouble finding enough king and /or queen sized bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate our entire family, and they provided the linens and towels, which was great! Nothing better than arriving after a long day (or two) of traveling to find a welcoming home, and the beds already made!

The house also has a wonderful sun porch which was our family's favorite gathering spot, and it had a table that would seat our whole family. The roof deck offers great views of the harbor and the stars at night.

Winter Harbor is a peaceful place to stay, while still being within easy reach of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park (Mount Dessert Island), Finback Alehouse, and other points of interest. We also explored the Schoodic side of Acadia National Park, and took the Schoodic Ferry into Bar Harbor one day – the departure dock is right down the street from the house, which was great.

Maine was gorgeous, and this house is great. Thank you!

Beautiful home and location.

  • 5 of 5

Cook's Cottage was a great place to stay for our family of 10. We loved the sitting room, as you have a terrific view of the harbor. Just a walk down the street to the ferry that takes you to Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor is about an hour drive - more if traffic is heavy, but totally worth the drive. Do the whale and puffin watch in the morning. We saw two humpbacks breaching, and the puffins were adorable. The house is beautifully decorated and had everything we needed.

Cook's Cottage Wonderful Vacation Home!

  • 5 of 5

My family just returned from a wonder vacation at Cook's Cottage in Winter Harbor, ME. This was a fabulous vacation home. This home has charm and character and plenty of space for our large family of 8 to enjoy themselves. Pictures inside don't do this home justice, it is much prettier inside than the pictures show and we were delighted that it was better than what we thought! Each room is beautifully decorated with all high end furnishings, sheets/towels and the kitchen with it's charm has everything you need from beautiful dishes to cookware etc. Everyone enjoyed their own room and the house has lots of bathrooms. When at the house the roof top deck was a favorite and the sun room overlooking the water had the most incredible breezes. It was a favorite spot for playing games at night! The views are terrific! The quiet little town has everything we needed, delicious restaurants, pottery/art/and craft shops and the 5&10! The bike rental shop was closed, but the bike shop at the Ferry lead us to a wonderful Sea Kayaking instructor in Hancock a short distance away who made the adventure on the water to see the seals a great experience! Bar Harbor and Acadia just a short drive away for day trips, dinner, and fire works!! Our family made lots of great memories at Cook's Cottage and we are looking forward to returning!

Comforts of home and a welcoming community

  • 4 of 5

Our family of four adults and one 5-year-old stayed at Cook's Cottage over Labor Day weekend this year and loved the beautifully decorated, home-like space and amenities. The new sitting/sun room and deck offering views of both the sea and the bay are indeed very nice for the enjoyment of morning coffee and afternoon cocktails.

The communities of the Schoodic area are welcoming, offering a more genuine 'downeast' experience than busy Bar Harbor, and the Schoodic Peninsula is well worth visiting, if you're at all enamored of the many personalities of the sea. We took the owners' recommendations for day excursions and were not disappointed! We enjoyed the relative privacy of the location yet got our fill of the Acadia area -- a great first trip to Maine.

Why four stars? The stairs for access to three of the five bedrooms, which should be obvious by design but are worth noting. One flight is original to the architecture and very steep, and both would be a consideration for families with toddlers or older guests.

Owner's Response: We thank this extended family for choosing Cook's Cottage for their stay in Winter Harbor. We, too, love the Schoodic Peninsula and all it has to offer for both visitors and year-round residents. As we have noted, Cook's Cottage is a restored and renovated farm house, built in 1893. We think it's original features add to the charm. There are two sets of stairs leading to the three upstairs bedrooms and the one in the front hallway (original to the house) is, indeed, somewhat steep. The other set is carpeted with 6" risers. Younger knees will not have a problem with the front hallway stairs, as we have found with our family. But because the steepness of the stairs concerned us for families with toddlers (ours included), we purchased and make available for our guests, an adjustable and movable baby gate to fit at the top or bottom of the stairs as needed. With the baby gate in place, access to the upstairs bedrooms is in no way impeded as we have the second set of stairs, with a lockable door at the top for any needed toddler protection. For those who do not care for stairs of any kind, we offer a large downstairs master bedroom suite, with a spacious king bedroom (12ft. by 16ft.) including a seating area, a dressing area with space for a child-sized mattress (29" by 60"), plus bedding to fit it, and a downstairs full bath. We have also built a brand new downstairs bedroom, with twins that can be made separately or made together as a king, which is across the hall from a very functional half bath/laundry room. Very few homes in Maine have two downstairs bedrooms and bathrooms, and we are pleased to be able to offer this feature to those with concerns about younger children or older knees.

Acadia's best kept secret

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Cook's Cottage for 3 nights this last summer. It was a family gathering to celebrate my father's 70th birthday. We were 6 adults and 4 children, ranging from 13 to 5 yrs of age. Right from the time of planning, the owners were fantastic about communicating with me. The Cottage itself was well-equipped and spacious - wish we could have brought 2 more guests with us! Everything worked great - appliances, TVs, wi-fi etc. We drove to MDI on the 2 nd day of our trip; was great but felt that the only down side to this Cottage was the 60+ minute ride to the MDI attractions themselves. On the 3 rd day, we decided to venture into the Schoodic section of the park (the entrance to which is less than a 2 min drive from the Cottage); this is the unexplored part of Acadia. The views were just fabulous; went up a hike to the Schoodic Head as a family and the pictures made it to the holiday card this year. Serenity, scenic views and silence are the hallmarks of this section of the park. We could always return to the Cottage in less than 15 minutes from this treasure; the deck was ready to entertain and watch fantastic sunsets. We spotted moose right behind the Cottage in the woods sitting in the deck. Would love to go back and stay here.

Owner's Response: Many thanks to this New England family for choosing Cook's Cottage and the very kind words. They have discovered what many have known, namely the Schoodic part of Acadia National Park is evry bit as beautiful as the part on Mount Desert Island. We couldn't agree more that a 60+ minute drive to Bar Harbor is a pain with Summer traffic. Our guests will find the Bar Harbor ferry dock right across Sargent St and the 40 minute ride to Bar Harbor much more relaxing than dealing with a lengthy drive. LL Bean runs a free shuttle bus service on Mt Desert as well, so if you don't take your bikes on the ferry, you have a way to get around. Come back soon!
