Spacious Winter Harbor Cook's Cottage

Bedrooms 5
Half Baths1
Space 2,100 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 5 nights

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Breathtaking water views of the mountains of Acadia across the Harbor, views over Lighthouse Island out to the open Ocean, and even views of tranquil Mill Stream. Every single room in this spacious cottage (including the bathrooms and even the attached garage!) has at least one water view; many rooms have two water views, and the views from the breezy screened sun porch are amazing! Located just steps down the street from the Bar Harbor ferry dock and within easy walking distance of the art galleries, antique stores and restaurants of the scenic village of Winter Harbor. Nearby bike and kayak rentals make this the perfect place to explore the Schoodic Loop of Acadia National Park - and the Park entrance is less than a half mile away!

There's a reason we call this 'The Cook's Cottage' - a large and well equipped kitchen is at the center of this 1893 home. First floor master bedroom suite with a twin bedroom adjacent to the living room AND a second floor master bedroom, plus two additional large bedrooms on the second floor. Two full bathrooms on the second floor, plus a half-bath on the first floor next to the living room. Spacious deck above garage, with access from upstairs MBR.

Why Douglas Greenwood chose Winter Harbor

We purchased this cottage in 2010 because we love the Schoodic Peninsula. We have owned another home on Paul Bunyan Road in Corea since 2005.

What makes this house unique

Walk to the Winter Harbor - Bar Harbor Ferry and all the shops and galleries in Winter Harbor. Or enjoy the spectacular views from the 2nd floor deck.

Five-star for everything!

  • 5 of 5

This was the second consecutive year I've rented Cook's Cottage for a group of ladies, and both groups have loved it. It's a spacious house with both large gathering places (beautiful sunroom and deck were favorite places) and places for private quiet times (most bedrooms are retreats, with comfy chairs or sofas). 3.5 baths is a great plus. This is definitely a house being transformed into a treasured home--not "just" a rental. It's super clean, furnished beautifully, has a well-stocked kitchen, great linens, extra towels, big and comfortable beds. Personally, it's my favorite kind of house: old, filled with character, enhanced by well-done, quality upgrades. Another review mentioned the steep front stairs. Yes, take care there. But the back stairs are new and easy and also give access to the entire second floor. Also, there are two bedrooms on the main floor.

Winter Harbor has become one of our favorite towns, and this house is set almost at the end of a side street, apart from the busy traffic flow, yet close enough to walk to everything. Not "right" on the water, but overlooking the harbor, with fantastic views of mountains, sea, and sunsets.

I especially appreciated the prompt return of my security deposit--within days of leaving.

Schoodic Peninsula, Cook's Cottage.

  • 4 of 5

We did tons of hiking on the coast and found the house to be quite comfortable, restful, and charming. Cook's Cottage was a great place to relax after a good long shore hike.

Beautiful house in outstanding location

  • 5 of 5

Cook's Cottage is beautifully situated on a quiet road overlooking the harbor. You can easily walk across the street and down a grassy hill to the water's edge. We launched kayaks from the shoreline and the kids enjoyed looking at shells and tide pools. The sunset views over the harbor were magical! The house itself is really well equipped and spacious and everything is in excellent condition. Lots of beds and bathrooms for our large family. My favorite part of the house was the sunroom- big table for family meals and glorious view of the harbor! The light in the evening was so pretty. We also enjoyed going up on the deck at night for excellent star gazing. The layout of the bedrooms is a bit unconventional but it works, and we appreciated the flexibility of making some rooms king or two twins. The town is lovely and it is so close to the Schoodic Loop Road. Frazer Point is only a 5 minute drive and we loved fishing from the dock and wading in the shallow water. This is a great vacation spot and we hope to come back soon!

Owner's Response: Many, many thanks for this wonderful review! Cook's Cottage is indeed very convenient to many Downeast Maine locations but we, too, sometimes find it hard to drag ourselves away from the sunporch or deck. Come visit our cottage and find out for yourself!

Amazing location and comfortable home for a big group

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our stay at Cook's Cottage. We were traveling with another family, so there were 4 adults and 4 children. There was more than enough room for all of us to be comfortable. As a group, we spent the most time in the spacious sun room and on the deck, and we cooked several meals in the well-stocked kitchen. The house is exactly what we were looking for; not fussy or fancy, just comfortable and welcoming, and the owners were extremely easy to work with and quick to respond to our questions.

The location is perfect for exploring the coast of Maine. We took the ferry into Bar Harbor to do whale watching and sea kayaking, but most days we enjoyed exploring the Schoodic peninsula by biking and hiking. We rented bikes very close to Cook's Cottage and biked the loop around the Schoodic portion of Acadia. We also went farther north up the coast and visited the lobster towns of Jonesport and Beals, and did a fantastic hike on Wass Island Preserve.

Close to the house, we enjoyed meals at The Pickled Wrinkle, J.M. Gerrish, and Fisherman's Galley. The food was great, and we appreciated the friendliness of all the servers and their willingness to give us tips on the area. We also checked out the town library in a fantastic old building, the Five and Ten, and Littlefield art gallery on the corner of the street that Cook's Cottage is on.

We have stayed at many VRBO properties over the years, and Cook's Cottage probably ranks as the best. I hope to be back someday!

great views, peaceful setting, and room for the entire family

  • 5 of 5

Cook's Cottage is a great place to stay. We often have trouble finding enough king and /or queen sized bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate our entire family, and they provided the linens and towels, which was great! Nothing better than arriving after a long day (or two) of traveling to find a welcoming home, and the beds already made!

The house also has a wonderful sun porch which was our family's favorite gathering spot, and it had a table that would seat our whole family. The roof deck offers great views of the harbor and the stars at night.

Winter Harbor is a peaceful place to stay, while still being within easy reach of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park (Mount Dessert Island), Finback Alehouse, and other points of interest. We also explored the Schoodic side of Acadia National Park, and took the Schoodic Ferry into Bar Harbor one day – the departure dock is right down the street from the house, which was great.

Maine was gorgeous, and this house is great. Thank you!

Beautiful home and location.

  • 5 of 5

Cook's Cottage was a great place to stay for our family of 10. We loved the sitting room, as you have a terrific view of the harbor. Just a walk down the street to the ferry that takes you to Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor is about an hour drive - more if traffic is heavy, but totally worth the drive. Do the whale and puffin watch in the morning. We saw two humpbacks breaching, and the puffins were adorable. The house is beautifully decorated and had everything we needed.
