About Chip and Joelyn Hilton
We love being able to unwind in the quiet and spaciousness of our desert surroundings. We moved into our house about thirteen years ago and built the separate studio on our one-acre property a few years later. The studio includes a pottery, where Chip, the owner, can be found most days, making tiles, cups, bowls and other cool stuff.
Chip and Joelyn Hilton purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Chip and Joelyn Hilton chose Mesa
Chip is a ceramic tile and pottery artist. When his projects started getting too big, we realized we needed more space, so we moved out to east Mesa, where we had the room to build an art studio. The added bonus is that it's also close to hiking, mountain biking, and the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Part of the art studio has been converted to the vacation rental, complete with it's own entrance, patio, and upper deck.

Booked for quiet and location; will return for the casita and the hosts!
When I look for VRBO's my top priorities are peace, quiet, and proximity to nature. Places like that that are affordable are not always easy to find, which makes this sweet little casita even more of a gem in my opinion. It's in a low-density area of northeastern Mesa, near the Superstition Mountains and other hiking/outdoor recreation areas. At the same time it's not "out in the middle of nowhere" in the sense that it's still in Mesa so you can get to main roads and conveniences easily.
The casita itself is as described-- cozy. It's one room, attached to the owner's fascinating ceramics/tile studio, and near to the owner's house so if you need anything they are always available but never intrusive. It has a super comfortable bed, a big, beautiful shower, and a functional though small kitchen. I also book VRBO's because I like to cook rather than eat in restaurants; I found that in the casita if I bought and prepared food that was simple to make and easily reheated I did just fine. There is also a small sofa and coffee table as well as a few additional chairs.
If I had any recommendations at all for the owners, I'd invite them to create a bit of additional storage, as storage is at a premium in the casita. Though there is a small closet it is really only for hanging clothes and there's nowhere to put things like socks, underwear, t-shirts, shorts, etc. unless you end up keeping them in your suitcase. I'd invite the owners to consider letting go of the cabinet under the TV that houses books, games, and DVD's, as I'm guessing those items might be under utilized; replacing that cabinet with a similarly sized dresser for the above mentioned items would be greatly helpful.
All that being said the casita is certainly easily do-able for one person with a minimum of stuff, and from the guestbook I see that may couples have stayed there quite happily.
And of course, there's the outdoor space which is lovely. You will be surrounded by the beautiful saguaro desert and can view it from the amazing rooftop deck.
I'd be completely remiss also if I didn't say the hosts are just terrific, wonderful, thoughtful and funny people that I feel blessed to have met.
Thanks so much, Diane, for taking the time to write such a great review of our studio! We appreciate your suggestion about the storage too. We might just try that. :)
It was a pleasure having you as a guest, and we hope to see you again sometime!
Comfortable and relaxing!
We stayed 4 weeks in the Phoenix area in 4 different places. Chip and Joelyn's studio was our favorite. The casita was very comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed. The owners let you have your privacy, but if you want to check out Chip's ceramic studio, ask questions about the area, or just socialize, they are more than happy to talk. The rooftop deck was a favorite place for spectacular sunrises and sunsets. We will be back!! Thanks Chip and Joelyn!
Comfort and Hospitality
The studio is clean and comfortable. Joelyn and Chip have made it very welcoming. I did mostly hiking and found great trails nearby and easy conversation with the hosts.
Beautiful surroundings, cozy and comfy studio!
We've been staying in this cozy studio since March 2011! We love coming here and have become good friends with Joelyn and Chip, two wonderful and warm people. The location is great for hiking in Usery Mountain Park and in the Superstitions. Stores and restaurants are within 15 minutes so it is quite convenient. We love the natural surroundings and views from the roof top deck of the Superstition Mountains. This is a great place for a week or two, but not for a month or more. It is small, but we love it. It feels like home to us when we come! Good for one person or a couple, but no more than that.
Great location, beautiful views
We enjoyed our stay at Chip & Joelyn's studio very much. The owners are very nice and the property is well maintained and nicely decorated. We especially enjoyed the beautiful views of the Superstition Mountains, both from our room and from the rooftop. Nice place to stay!
Quaint. Perfectly located. Well supplied.
This was a perfect get away! Quiet yet close to town. The hosts are truly amazing people. Chip is an artist and if you're lucky he'll give you a tour of his studio. His work is really superb and unique. Joelyn is so very sweet. They have combined both of those traits in this cozy retreat which will leave you talking about it for a very long time. Thank you! We will contacting you again for our next trip out!
Thank you for the kind words, Kris. It was so great to meet you and your husband and know that you enjoyed the time that you were here in Arizona. We look forward to seeing you when you visit again!
