Overview

About the property

Villa, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Villa Bendicion is uniquely situated on a cliff offering a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and the surf. Bendicion is the Spanish word for blessing. We feel blessed to stay in such a place surrounded by natural beauty. The large terrace and gazebo offer many opportunities to enjoy the day with the sea and sky as a constant companion. I have a special home made chair in the corner of the terrace where I have my morning beverage and contemplate the surf conditions.

El Zonte beach, is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. Sheer cliffs border a 3 kilometer beach. Rock formations rise out of the powdery volcanic sand. At low tide discover tiny sea creatures among the rocks and swim in tidal pools, at high tide swim in a saltwater pool that overflows with the incoming waves.

About Mike and Paola

Paola and I met at sunset on El Zonte beach in 2001. Her grandfather built one of the original homes in El Zonte in the late 50's. Her family visited the beach almost every weekend. Originally from Virginia, I first surfed in El Zonte in 1995 and bought my first home there in 2000. Paola is a theater actor and I am a visual artist. We have two daughters.

Mike and Paola purchased this villa in 2005

Why Mike and Paola chose El Salvador

For me, El Zonte means childhood memories. I have the opportunity of having my children enjoy it as much as I did. The house is well located in El Salvador map. We are close enough to San Salvador to enjoy the entertainment dining and art, but far enough to feel the serenity of the beach. The colonial towns of Ataco and Apaneca can be reached by car in a little over an hour as well. Mike traveled a lot through south and Central America and when he came to El Zonte he found the right place for him in its unique, quiet and beautiful scenery.

What makes this villa unique

Our house was designed for relaxation and entertainment. Last year we added lighting mosaic tile, and an underwater bench to our pool. The bench facilitates enjoying the pool with our girls while they learn to swim. We love seafood, grilling a big Red Snapper by the pool, eating fresh oysters brought out from in front of our property, and making ceviche. Our terraces and gazebo are large enough and separate enough to hold group and private activities simultaneously. Often, when we are entertaining, someone is sleeping in the hammock while another group socializes, and someone else meditates or reads at the gazebo.

A homeless house

  • 1 of 5

Not sure if you can call it a "house" is most a dog house, very old , very dirty, all the facilities are in poor condition, also all is full of street dogs hair, the price is really insane for that house, i think it should be a $20 by night house, even at that price you would find better options, i hope that international tourist dont go to this house because they will have a bad opinion of our country, sorry for the owner, it looks to be a good person but that house is in shame conditions

Owner's Response: Dear Alejandro, Thanks for your review..However as owner and manager of Villa Bendicion, i completely disagree with your critique of our property. It stems perhaps from your desire to stay an extra night for free which we did not allow. As well, i spoke with Alejandro and his guest at least 3 times during their stay and asked if there was anything they needed and each time they replied that they were fine. Thank you.

A lovely retreat

  • 5 of 5

This house exceeded all of our expectations. It was my husband, my 9 year old, and me. Mike was super helpful in all things even though he was on vacation himself. He set up our taxis to and from the airport, and made sure we had access to all the the things we needed. The house is lovely. Great AC. Nice bedrooms. We hung out in the pool when it got too hot, and swung in the hammocks and read a lot. We walked right down the stairs to the ocean and looked at the tide pools at low tide. Bring water shoes if you come in the rainy season. It's all rocks out front. We fell asleep to the sound of crashing waves every night. Pro tips for your stay: Stop at the big grocery store at La Libertad on the way in. (taxi driver will happily make this stop)..buy all the things you think you might need since there isn't a grocery store nearby (cooking oil..seasoning etc...the kitchen is stocked with utensils and pots, but doesn't include that stuff..which is fine..just make sure you get some!) Also, keep in mind that that there's no ATM in town, so make sure you have enough cash. The closest one is in El Tunco, about a 10-15 minute drive away. In all, you should totally stay here if you're thinking about it. This little surf town is legit. So peaceful, and just easy to spend a week chilling in.

Unforgettable trip!

  • 5 of 5

Amazing location looking over surf point break of El Zonte. Surf is fun and basically down a few stairs. Very accessible and friendly locals. Me and 3 sons had an amazing trip surfing and loafing in pool and hammocks. Mike was very accommodating and arranged maid and cook and rides. Delicious dinners after surf days or tours all ready for us at our place. Comfortable home with AC in rooms. Took 3 trips with Rivas a great tour guide. We went to waterfalls with rocks to jump off, Mayan ruins and tour of volcanic sites. Very informative. We felt like we got a taste El Salvador-the culture, the history and the people. What a cool country. We felt safe and completely at ease. Highly recommend Casa Bendicion for an unforgettable adventure and great surf destination!

Relaxing week in El Zonte

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 just returned from 8 nights at Villa Bendicion. Mike was really helpful arranging transportation from the airport, to the grocery store and fish market, restaurants and other areas of El Salvador. We spent most days relaxing in the pool, reading or napping in the hammock. Three of us surfed and enjoyed great waves in warm water. No wetsuits! What a treat! The house was very comfortable and we all enjoyed getting to know Mike and his family. Having a few of our meals prepared for us (with the fish we bought at the fish market) was also one of the highlights or our time there. I highly recommend a visit and would return to El Salvador without hesitation.

Amazing family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, our two young girls (age 3 and 1), and I spent an amazing week at Casa Bendicion! This was our first international trip with the kids and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. The house was great, having a pool for the kids was fantastic, the sound of the waves was so nice, and the town of El Zonte was easy to walk to and hang out in. Mike and his family went above and beyond to help us get groceries, a rental car, a cook...whatever we needed. His kids even played with my three year old, which she thought was the best part of the trip. We felt totally safe the entire time we were in El Salvador and had a fun time trying to piece together our broken Spanish. I would absolutely recommend this house to anybody, especially families, as it was a perfect option for us.

Picture Perfect

  • 5 of 5

Two friends and I just returned from staying at Casa Bendicion for a week and absolutely loved it. Mike and his family are great hosts and can set you up with whatever you need...a ride to and from the airport, a cook, trips to the market, a massage, and local knowledge of places to eat and surf. The weather was perfect and the water was warm. The waves were fun and the locals were all very friendly. We enjoyed making the short walk from the house to the town of El Zonte to eat, shop, surf, etc. We never felt unsafe at all. In fact, it was quite the opposite. We found the locals to be incredibly friendly and helpful. I sustained a small cut on my head while surfing (out of my own carelessness) and when I walked up the beach w/ a bleeding head a small army of locals sprang into action getting me a wet towel, bandages, ice and making sure I made it to the house safely. I was so impressed. I highly recommend Mike's place for anyone looking to get away and just relax. The pool is perfect for cooling off and having AC in each of the rooms made it so comfortable for sleeping. Back in the cold waters of California I am missing this place more than ever and can't wait to get back. We'll be seeing you soon, Caballo. Thanks again for an awesome trip.
