About Grant Carlson
I'm a Canadian who came here in 1993 for a combination of adventure and investment. I built a home in La Palma overlooking Arenal Volcano, and because of the shortage of places for people to stay gradually became involved in tourism. It has been a wonderful experience meeting people from all over the world. When it comes to the wonders of nature, everyone reacts in a similar way. Awe, respect, wonder and delight.
Grant Carlson purchased this House in 1995
Why Grant Carlson chose La Fortuna
When I decided on Costa Rica as a place to live in and invest I knew very little about the country, apart from its positive reputation. It was only later that I realized I needed a 'where' in Costa Rica. After driving around the country for a week or so I arrived in La Fortuna and immediately knew that this was where I wanted to be. It was something I still can't explain. I built the home, which eventually evolved into a B and B, about two years after arriving. I drove a fifth wheel down here from Vancouver and lived in that until my home was complete.
What makes this House unique
The Nicaraguan and Costa Rican people Ive become friends with over the years have enhanced my life immeasurably. As well. the climate, the greenery, fresh air, the birds and, of course, the volcano, all serve to make this area a very special place in the world.

We were in Costa Rica earlier this months. We traveled by plane, boat, car all over the country. It was a fine time. This property at La Fortuna was most excellent -- cool (mountains), views (Arenal Volcano), good locality. No disrespect to the owners, but Marian (lived on the property as caretaker/manager) was the true find. She was dear and attentive to us, cooking breakfast, and at our insistence, eating with us. This was an excellent part of our trip _ Marian, Arenal. hot springs, sitting on the veranda watching the volcano, birds, mammals. Go there...
Fabulous home and location!
Beautiful home with everything we needed! Miriam was outstanding at checking us in, giving us information, and cooking amazing breakfasts. The location could not be better! We enjoyed views of the volcano and tropical birds every morning and had only a short drive to all adventures without the noise and hassle of staying in Fortuna.
Pasado Colonial is incredible. Ten out of five stars! Family Friendly, huge, clean and private.
What an incredible property.
I cannot say enough about how much we loved this place.
Grant was easy to communicate and book with online; quick and friendly responses. And, upon arrival, Miriam was very available and absolutely a gem.
The property: huge, gorgeous, clean and so much more.
We are a family of four and whenever we have another opportunity, we will definitely be returning. This house felt like a mansion in the mountains and rainforest. There was a perfect private and short trail to enjoy. Miriam made delicious (and made to order!) huge breakfasts daily and the house was spotless.
All the fun things are a short drive away and there is so much fun to be had.
Our small children loved this property. We made memories of a lifetime in just five short days. We also fell in love with Bethoven and Chloe the resident pups.
Thanks, Pasado Colonial.
Everyone who books here is lucky! It is totally worth every penny. It is like your own private oasis with amazing views and delicious food.
Thank you so very, very much, and I'll pass along your kind words to Miriam.
Every happiness to you and your family,

Thanks so much!
I really enjoyed everything about this place! Grant was so easy and helpful to work with. Mariam is delightful, a wonderful cook. The property is beautiful! Really loved the outside patio and the beautiful path to the creek. The location was perfect for local activities and sights. Would definitely come back if in the area Again! Can't beat the price and the hospitality is outstanding! Thanks Grant and mariam!
Thank you so much for your kind words and it was a pleasure to be your hosts. Miriam also passes along her very best regards,
Thanks again, and all the very best,
The area has many famous natural springs heated underground by the Volcano, and is also famous for its birds and other wild life, and its easy access to rain forests, Lake Arenal is the largest lake in Costa Rica and just a few minutes away by car.and is known for world famous rafting and wind surfing Of course there are canopy tours, horse rentals to the famous La Fortuna waterfall (and other areas as well). It's very easy to fill in an entire week enjoying all the natural activities in the area without doing the same thing twice. The property is not all that difficult to find and I always remind people to ask the locals. It actually is an opportunity to talk to these very friendly people.
I'm not certain which direction you'll be coming fom so will give you both. It's about a three hour drive from San Jose through some very pretty country. The roads are good but two lanes for much of the way, so take your time and leave earlyish.
After you leave the airport you'll see a sign saying Nicaragua and the North and the main Pan American highway. You'll travel northerly for perhaps an hour until you see San Ramon where you'll turn off and you can only turn right. Keep going in much the same general direction until you get to the outskirts of town and then watch for signs saying La Fortuna, or symbols of the Volcano, In case of any concern at all please just ask directions to La Fortuna. Everyone knows it and they enjoy helping guests to their country. Just point and ask "La Fortuna?".
Once you arrive in La Fortuna you'll see an Alamo rental car outlet on the Volcano side of the town, a couple of blocks west of the Church. This is the main road which will take you to our place.
About a mile out of town you'll see a supermarket which might be a good place to stock up on things you may need. Then continue your journey in the same direction passing Las Lagos, Baldi and then, a little later, a small bridge with a large sign on the right saying Volcano Lodge. Just a little bit more and there is a long natural rock fence and our property is at the end of that fence so slow down and prepare to turn. A sharp left will take you under the archway and then you park wherever you want. Someone will be there to greet you very soon. The large home you see in front of you is yours. If we don't see you right away just make yourselves at home because we'll be around somewhere. Our coordinates are
10.5019° N, 84.6914° W
If you're coming from Liberia turn right at the main Pan American highway until you reach Canas and then go left along the main road there. There should be lots of signs and if you are at all unsure please don't hesitate to ask. There is a bit of a tricky turn once you're in Tilaran so be careful there. Otherwise just ask as the people are very friendly and enjoy getting involved.
Once you pass the town of Arenal you'll eventually come to a dam and we're about 10-15 minutes from there. You'll soon see Tabacon Resort and then, on your left, Montana del Fuego and Paraiso Resort. Then slow down because you'll see a sign saying Posada Colonial on the right, which is us. Park anywhere and we'll be watching for you. If we don't see you right away just make yourselves at home because we'll be around somewhere.
Our phone number here is 2479-1594 or (604) 325 5277 in Vancouver.
Wishing you all a pleasant and safe journey.
