Casa Pastel is a world of color and and experience of a different way of living. Located in the town of Tulum on a real life residential street among Mayan and Mexican neighbors. The gorgeous Tulum beaches are just a 5 minute drive away, or 1/2 hour bike ride. Casa Pastel will have the real life sounds and sights of a town, not a contrived resort - so don't expect silence most of the time here! Tulum is a lively town! You must be okay with hearing dogs, birds, roosters, children, neighbors, street vendors, and music at various times. We have free WIFI and two bikes you can rent for $5 per day.
Newly added is a front screened in porch so you can relax in the garden with fresh breezes day or night.

Casa Pastel was built in 2002 by Stephanie Pappas, a yoga teacher, author, and massage therapist from NJ.
The bedroom is a cabin with thatched roof on a large 10m x 30m enclosed property all to your self. The colorfully tiled bathroom and kitchenette are placed separate from the bedroom in this garden compound design (like those found in Bali, Indonesia where the owner once lived).
Casa Pastel is punctuated by vibrantly tiled walls, floors, bathroom, and patio. The tropical garden was planted over the years by the owner and includes fully grown coconut, mango and palm trees.
The property was designed for those who prefer to be outdoors in the sun and gardens. The casa has an open air kitchenette, and pretty tiled patio table, and a covered front porch to eat and relax.
Tulum is characterized by its wealth of sunshine, crystal blue Caribbean waters, large white beaches, and balmy breezes. The colorful adobe & mosaic tile decor of Casa Pastel complement the local tropical flora and fauna.
Tulum has an abundant street and night life with cafes and live music filling the air.
Casa Pastel is for those who want to taste an experience of living in the town. A short 5 minute walk to the main avenue takes you to all the food and entertainment you could want. And only a ten minute drive to the ancient mayan ruins of Tulum, Xel-Ha, Muyil. And just a half hour drive to the tallest climbable ruins of Coba.
A local artist and flamenco dancer Manuel Cano will meet you and introduce you to the Casa.
Other local English speaking hosts can answer your questions and offer you massage therapy services at the house.

Tulum is amazing. The beaches have an unprecedented beauty. It is great to eat outdoors in a tropical environment and on the beach. There are lots of local artists and musicians. Tulum has a funky-chic, yet mystical quality about it. Many comment on the intense spiritual energy coming from the nearby ruins, mayan influence, and underground waterways/caves.
Miles and miles of classic caribbean beaches that are largely empty, funky night life and eating outdoors, mystical experiences visiting the mayan ruins, cenotes, and underground caves.
Again, this property is in the town of Tulum on a friendly street. You will experience local liiving, which means you will hear roosters crowing, vendors riding their bikes, and your neighbors playing music or singing now and then!
Thank you so much for being a wonderful host for our stay here Tulum this week.
We truly enjoyed Casa Pastel and the company of Diego kitty and his gang. We have left some nice things on the refrigerator - some local honey, hibiscus flowers and cacao if either yourself or Manuel would enjoy these things.
Once again thank you very much and we will most definitely recommend you as a host in the future.

The property was so beautiful and exactly what we were looking for; quaint, exotic and homely. I really enjoyed staying in a neighborhood that didn't have many expats or tourists and I also loved the cats. It was a little difficult to find at first, maybe because we were walking. We eventually snagged a taxi bc it was raining so hard and he was a bit confused with the drawn map that I had as were we. I would suggest putting the small side streets on the hand drawn map so that it doesn't seem like you take your first left when leaving ADO. The other issue was that I couldn't find trash bags. Those are very small concerns and we had an incredible stay and would definitely return.
My husband and I spent 3 nights here and loved it. It was so private and we loved all the kitties who visited us. Stephanie was great to work with and gave us all kinds of info. She also answered any e-mail I sent with questions right away. Everyone should be like her :-)
We took a taxi when we arrived but then waked to town after that. It is a great location.
Manual was great. We would definitely stay here again. It is a beautiful place.
The only downfall was the construction on the house next door. Since this was the beginning of our vacation we were in bed early- otherwise it would have been no issue.
I have stayed at Casa Pastel several times, and each time it gets better and better. Stephanie gives this house a lot of love and attention. This is a great place to get away from it all and unwind. You can easily stay at the Casa and read, relaxi in the hammock, do yoga and dance in the screened in porch, enjoy the tropical plants, and play with the friendly cats, and leave only to walk down the street to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at an open air market to take back home and cook in the outdoor kitchen. If you do feel the need to leave, the beach and ruins can be reached by an nice 30 minute bike ride along an easy paved bike trail or a quick zip in your car or taxi. The house manager Manuel will make sure you are comfortable and any issues that may arise are quickly taking care of. I have stopped looking for other places to travel to and instead keep returning to Casa Pastel where I know I will always feel safe and at home.
Casa pastel is a beautiful and thoughtfully built property and we enjoyed every minute of our week's stay over Christmas 2015. I was worried our young children aged 2 and 3 would get bored but they loved it just as much as we did. My daughter called it our 'jungle house'. The neighbourhood is quiet and friendly (with a great atmosphere during Christmas!) and its about 10 minute walk in to town which was perfect. Stephanie and Manuel couldn't have been more helpful and the whole experience was fantasic. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone but I would say to get the most out of your experience you need a car.
My husband and I stayed at Casa Pastel December 2nd-8th, 2015. The casa was the perfect home base for our week in Tulum. Stephanie was so helpful in answering all of my questions, and she sent us a lot of very helpful information prior to our arrival (maps, directions, restaurant recommendations, etc.), and Manuel takes great care in the upkeep of the property. We enjoyed being "in town", and not at the touristy hotels at the beach. The neighborhood is safe, and the locals are very friendly. We loved the little fruit and veggie shop around the corner, and stopped there almost daily (they also sell super fresh, delicious tortillas!). I enjoyed cooking in the outdoor kitchen, and eating dinner outside by candlelight. We spent most of our time at Casa Pastel sitting outside, hanging out with the kitties, and listening to the sounds of the neighborhood. The casa is located in a good spot, where it was easy to get to everything (we did have a rental car) - grocery stores, the beach, restaurants, and activities (we visited the ruins at Tulum, Muyil, and Ek Balam, and also Cenote Cristal, and took a day trip to Valladolid). If you're looking for a five-star resort, this isn't the place for you. But if you are looking to really experience Tulum, and want a nice, clean, affordable place to call home, Casa Pastel is the perfect spot. We will definitely stay here again if we are ever back in Tulum.
The casita is like a little oasis in the craziness of Tulum proper. The outdoor living experience is fantastic - you'll want to start cooking outside at home after a stay here! Stephanie and Manuel were wonderful, responsive hosts. And, Diego Kitty & friends kept the place lively and feeling like home. I was sorry to have left after so short of a stay, but, thrilled we had the opportunity to enjoy this little slice of heaven.
