Review of our stay on Chaney Trail, Altadena
We rented the house on Chaney Trail in Altadena for the week surrounding New Years day in 2018. There are two sides to our rating. First the "good" news: The property is situated on 2 acres, the last house into the foothills of the mountains above the Pasadena area, a perfect location with minimal landscaping but many huge olive trees; it has four patio areas accessible from the many doors and a large attached deck; there is off-street parking for four-plus cars; there are provisions for outdoor fires in three different places, but the fire danger is so serious that they shouldn't be used; the peace and quiet is wonderful, with the sound of roosters from the opposite horse ranch in the morning; the grounds allow kids to dig, build forts, chase, play hide and seek, etc. without upsetting anything, to their hearts content, not underfoot, and away from their electronic brain suckers; there is an outdoor hot tub as well, but it is in the proximity of an ill-timed rain-bird sprinkler which limits it's use. The house is a 1920's type real ranch house with a huge three-side windowed living room with a fireplace and access to a large patio through two french doors; a large windowed enclosed porch/den which has a half bath, a built-in wet bar, and a fireplace, with access to the deck two places. The master bedroom is large with a nice bathroom; another small bedroom with full bath off the butler's pantry; two larger bedrooms with a shared full bath, "Jack and Jill" style; in the den there is enough room for use of the sofa-bed and the half- bath; there is a dining room with windows on three sides with an adjoining butler's pantry with a wet bar/coffee making area; the kitchen, next to the butler's pantry, has a normal double sink and another sink in a central island plus a "back" porch with a door to the deck; the entry, central hallway and den all have hardwood floors. This is an older house built like they used to build, that is probably over 4000 sq. feet in size. Now the "bad" news: The entire place is in need of major TENDER LOVING CARE. Almost all the upholstered furniture, indoor and outdoor, is really worn out. Many things did not work, including the indoor gas fireplaces. My space is limited, so I must stop. Did we enjoy our stay? Absolutely! Could we work around the faults, and stay there again? Absolutely! Be warned by it's shortfalls, but we had an adventure there.
Home with Guts, Grit and History...
The cover page for this property is a pristine hot tub taken during spring time conditions.... This is not what we found in the fall. Don't get me wrong, we loved the home in it's 1933 glory. Large lot with a TON of potential and we worked hard to make sure it was a great stay. In autumn the century old olive trees are shedding everywhere, including in the hot tub but we cleaned it out and made it "our own" for the three day visit... We lived in Altadena for more than 8 years, just blocks away from this home, and can appreciate the extreme changes that the seasons bring... There are really two seasons: rainy and dry. In November it's the end of the dry season and the vegetation cries out for the rain. The home is apparently built on an old olive orchard planted early in the 20th Century, there were thousands of olives everywhere, including the pictured hot tub. The water was cold when we arrived but Eric walked us through getting the motor going which is located under the tub. Having to climb down to get the motor working was a little bit worrisome, it's a prime location for rattlers and black widows... we found neither.
We arrived at dark which was wonderful for those who can appreciate the horrific aura portrayed in movies. There are some pathway lights leading from the circular brick driveway but they are just dim enough to get the blood flowing. The front porch light illuminated the lockbox sufficiently but we appreciated the penlight we had to simultaneously read directions while pressing the correct sequence of buttons... The creaking front door added a bit of drama to our arrival as did the dark entryway and creaking wood floor boards.... Personally I loved it but can't claim the same for everyone... As we walked through the house, turning on lights talking and laughing loudly, the most terrifying part was when my son-in-law almost fell down the very dark, very steep, unlocked basement stairs. My daughter turned white despite her husbands survival and exclaimed, "this is the basement stairway in all of my nightmares!" Her five year old gave her two stuffed bears and said, "Mom, I think you need these"... We were hysterical!
I'd give it a five-star rating if not for the hot tub, dirty furniture, moldy showers and stuffing-less sofas. I let Property Management know about my concerns and they said they'd deal with it... I hope so, wouldn't mind staying again.
Perfect for family celebration
The house was the perfect venue for the 90th birthday celebration of the patriarch of our family. There were enough bedrooms and bathrooms for my husband and I, our two sons and their families. The floor plan and deck allowed the guests at the birthday party to easily move from the deck, where the food was served, to the game room where the birthday boy was enjoying his time with his visitors. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare breakfast and lunch at the house. We feel very fortunate to have found such a great place that was easily accessible for everyone.
We are delighted that the patriarch's birthday was a success. It is a large house that welcomes big families with moderate size parties in this residential neighborhood.
Perfect place for a family gathering
We stayed at this property for a memorial service for a family member who passed away. This home was perfect because it could accommodate a number of family members and we were able to host the extended family after the service and reception, giving everyone the opportunity to spend some additional time together. There were a number of lovely outdoor patios and a deck to gather to talk and remember, laugh and cry. Also, it was quiet. We would stay there again definitely.
We enjoyed having the guests. They had a family gathering of 20 people and left the house in great condition. Lots of patios and spaciousness for comfort and solace. Glad to be of service.
It is a good place to stay and visit LA and suburb areas. Overall the property was good. Owners need to upload some good looking new pictures in the web. Current pictures are really blurry!
We agree with the comments on picture quality. In the process of hiring a professional photographer to post better pictures. Thanks for the comment.

Have a lovely time in the house. It was big and quite. The space around the house is awesome for strolls. Nice breeze in the evening and the patio deck is just awesome.
