About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 4

Welcome to La Malagueña, a getaway that will enthrall your senses and nurture your spirit.

Our house is in the heart of downtown Guanajuato in the most beautiful plaza in town-Plaza San Fernando. From our house you can comfortably walk to most historical and cultural sites and many language schools, restaurants, cafes, and bars. We're only a few steps from the Basilica de Guadalupe, Teatro Juarez, Mercado Hidalgo, and the University of Guanajuato. Since our house is in the heart of downtown you don't have to climb steep narrow streets or callejones.

Our home was originally built in the 18th century and has been restored and remodeled several times, the last time by the renowned Mexican artist, Juan Ibañez. It's made from adobe so it naturally warms and cools the house and the temperature inside is always ideal. Its construction is of stone and pine with copper accents. It takes advantage of the Mexican sun and sky and its position on the most beautiful square in Guanajuato with French doors opening onto the fountain below and a wonderful rooftop garden in which you can sit and while away the time, above it all.

Our place is ideal for the seasoned traveler who prefers the comforts of home combined with the uniqueness of a true Mexican experience.

You'll not only enjoy the comfort, style, and location of our place but also the hospitality of our staff. ¡BIENVENIDOS!!!

About Maria Demello

My husband and I lived in Guanajuato for many years and loved living there, however, due to the nature of our professions we had to relocate. We come back to Guanajuato every chance we get but when we are not there, we like to share our place with visiting travelers.

Since we both love to travel, we try to provide our guests with the same standards of excellence that we expect when we travel.

Maria Demello purchased this house in 1997

Why Maria Demello chose Zona Centro

La Malagueña is truly a magical house. There is no other house in town quite like ours. The architecture is so unusual that it's difficult to describe but every room is filled with character and style. There are plants everywhere in the house, even in the bathrooms. The rooftop is a peaceful oasis with more than 100 plants and a great view of the mountains, Plaza San Roque, the University of Guanajuato, the Mercado that make you feel you're on top of the world.

Our location is unbeatable! You are in the center of everything. You don't even have to go out of the house to enjoy Guanajuato because the vibrancy of the city comes to you. When you open the balcony doors to the plaza, you let in the festivities and can hear the concerts, view the performances, sing along with the troubadours or simply people watch as you enjoy a glass of wine or a Margarita.

What makes this house unique

* Flexible check-in and check-out. No set policy unless we have other guests arriving the same day.

* Bilingual administrator who is only a call away for any needs or recommendations and 24/7 for emergencies.

* We offer great bilingual walking tours of Guanajuato with historical, cultural, and social insights of the downtown and less know but as important sites outside the center of town.

Absolutely wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay, excellent location- very central to all of Guanajuato. It is in a lively plaza full of restaurants, small stores and an amazing bakery- we stopped there every day for pastries- another incentive to walk & walk & walk! While the plaza is a great place to be, guests who want a quiet stay throughout the day may find that to be a challenge- there's lots of activity throughout the day & the nearby restaurants are. The upstairs terrace is an absolute oasis for all the senses! The house has plenty of room- there was only 2 of us but we could have brought 4 more people & we would have been comfortable. When we go back to Guanajuato, we will rent this house again- it is a gem- beautiful inside & out and within walking distance of everywhere- galleries, restaurants, Juarez theater, the central market & museums. Loved it!

Muchas Gracias

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed our stay in this very quaint, eccentric, over 125 year old La Malaquena. Its quirky authenticity is its charm and it is lovely: from the entrance with the sky light and exotic plants, the well appointed large great room which can open to the square, the large and very serviceable kitchen, the spiral stairs to the upper bedroom, and the outside porch facing the square with plants galore made for a very comfortable stay. We would have used the upper most sun porch if the lounge chairs had been repaired.

Our friends had the downstairs bedroom just off the inner sky lighted entrance. The glass bedroom doors did not eliminate the noise from the neighbor’s open barred window in the foyer. They had several restless nights from the noise of the neighbors. My wife and I slept very well in the upper bedroom. The beds were very comfortable.

Maria made securing the space very easy. And do not pass up a tour given by Lorena the house manager. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

All in all I loved La Malaquena and Guanajuato is fabulous. And staying in San Fernando Square made for a very authentic experience.

This House Captures the Feel of the City

  • 5 of 5

This was our third trip to Guanajuato, and staying in La Malaguena was by far the best lodging experience we've had. Such wonderful, welcoming touches, beginning with vases of gorgeous flowers throughout the house. The personable property manager gave us a thorough tour of the house and info on a taxi driver who took good care of us. We loved being in the center of things, on San Fernando Plaza, and did not find it too noisy to enjoy evenings on the 3rd floor terraza or to sleep (the noise of the floor fan made all the difference.) The house itself surrounds you with the beauty and culture of "old" Mexico, while being comfortable and accommodating. (Note: we are fine with stairs, which matters in this house.) We enjoyed cooking two meals in the well-stocked kitchen. We especially loved the terraza, with it's living and dining areas and tons of well-tended potted plants. We will want to stay here again, next time we visit this fabulous city.

Location, Location, Location

Impressive home in the lively Plaza San Fernando. The main floor is lovely with a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Lots of plants and sitting areas. The roof deck offered beautiful views. We were welcomed by Lorena who showed us the home, we greatly appreciated that they were able to accommodate our early arrival. Although there are no stairs to get to the home there are many stairs within the house therefore I would not recommend for families with small children. We would have loved to spend more than one night in this beautiful home.
