This house is a family house that was purchased in 1971. We have spent a lot of family time in the house. Our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have enjoyed vacations in our cabin. I rent this cabin out of love for my mother Marcella Davis. I am Denise Enderle, my CALBRE #00673963

Lots of Bad and One Star of Good
PROS: The location is nice and just as you enter town. It's not too far away to the downtown area. There was a very nice corner store super close where you could get most things if you don't want to go to main grocery store. It's close to the Aspen Glen Sledding area-a "free" sled area (but you must purchase a parking pass for $5). The unit itself has a nice fireplace and a large TV. There were plenty of sleeping options and the beds were decent.
CONS: We found dog feces under the dining room table. A person in our party unexpectedly stepped on this surprise in bare feet while sitting down to dinner on night 1 of our 3 night stay. I'm curious what our cleaning fee went to considering it hadn't been cleaned before our arrival. Totally disgusting. The lack of clean didn't stop there. We went to use some pans in the cupboard and there was a gross amount of old food & dirt when we picked them up (never mind they were putting dishes on the floor in the first place). I did message the owner upon our return--complete with pictures--and she said folks break the no-dog policy and she'd let the cleaning staff know. Ummm, ok. It's not like I was looking for any kickback....but she didn't even offer a refund on our cleaning fee since it wasn't cleaned in the first place OR even an offer for it to be waived next time we stayed....or something. But nada. Barely an apology.
There are no general instructions given on clean-out---for instance, did we need to dispose of the ashes in the fireplace? If so, where do those go? We ended up finding the ash can buried under snow outside & cleaning out the FP---but would've been nice to have a complete checklist so we don't get dinged additional cleaning fees (laughable in and of itself).
There are warnings about the TV not working if you change a "setting" This is a super easy fix & it would be nice to let your guests know how to fix it instead. It got changed during our stay and took all of 2 minutes to get it working again.
Instructions about the heat--and where to leave the heat settings should also be provided in a checklist. Glad we saw the barely visible paper by the thermostat.
Kitchen supplies: not a single skillet (but 3 pressure cookers). So I would recommend bringing one of your own.
GENERAL: No WiFi. Be prepared to unplug for your stay (a PRO in my book--just not something we were prepared for at all). No one had any data capabilities despite having service through major carriers.
This cabin was professionally cleaned before this occupancy.
This guest was suppose to have 6 adults in her party, but my neighbor called me and told me there were 8, that would equal $24.38 per person per night. She left the property extremely dirty and the housekeeper had to spend extra time cleaning. I told them that I only rented the property to 6 people.
I do not know what this guest is referring to as far as dishes are concerned they are all in a very clean cabinet and they are put through the dishwasher between each occupancy. There has been a lot of snow recently, like everyone wants, I am sorry she had a problem finding the ash can. As far as the TV is concerned, I can not anticipate what a guest will do to the TV as I do not know what type of equipment they will hook up so there is no way to instruct the guests as to what to do if there is a problem. We have a sign below the heater because many people do not read the information that is sent to them and it is very important during cold periods to have the heat at 55. We never advertised any WiFi and our AT&T and Verizon phones and iPads work find, I am not sure what her carrier was.
This guest asked for a refund even though they enjoyed their vacation in my vacation home. All of these criticisms from this guest are all just an effort to extort money and enjoy a vacation at an owners expense. Shame on them.
cozy and clean
we had a wonderful family reunion. while we were all not able to stay in the cabin together, we all enjoyed the large dining table for games and laughter in the evenings. hope to make it back there in the future!
Love love loved it!
My best friend and I took our kids for the weekend for some snowboarding and relaxing jan 9-11, and we are so so pleased with this cabin! It had everything we could want and more. Roomy, comfy, and easy to get to. The neighborhood was safe and quiet. Also, the cabin was so CLEAN! No funny smells or dusty areas. Truly it was perfect in every way and we can't wait to go back. IF you are looking to rent in big bear this is the place to do it. For those heading to the slopes this property is about 10min from snow summit. WONDERFUL TIME! Thanks Denise!
Great Cabin Will Be Returning
This is a gem of a cabin, my three kids, my husband and myself, had a great vacation here, it is just as the pictures look, it was very clean and well kept we were lucky enough to be here for the winter storm that blew through for New Years 2015, the house was really warm inviting, and had all the essentials, down to a crock pot. We felt like we were home. We are definitely coming back if we don't make the winter we will be back for summer. I am passing the information to my family and friends.
Had a great Thanksgiving day with the Family. Kids had fun at magic mountain had a great walk to the lake.also the village was a good place for the kids to walk at night even thou it was cold we had ice cream and took pictures at the Christmas lights.
Won't stay here again. Bad experience.
Owner didn't tell us we had to bring our own sheets and towels until after we paid through PayPal. We would have booked somewhere else if we had known. One king bed was very nice. The other had a bunk bed over it that was so low the couple kept hitting their heads because there was not enough room to sit up. We had the double bed downstairs. Mattress was comfortable, but the springs were terrible. They squeaked loudly every time we moved, so we didn't get much sleep. It was a rainy weekend with a 2 year old and the TV was out for 2 days. After contacting the owner, we dealt with the cable company with her permission and stuck around for the 4 hour window on Sunday morning for the repairman to come out and adjust the device on the roof. When I let the owner know it was fixed and asked for a minor reduction on our rental, she complained about our assistance. Finally she said she would refund $25. for our trouble, but never did.
I am very sorry that you did not have a good time on your vacation at my cabin. I know that during your stay there were thunder storms with a lot of hail and winds for several days. For some people rainy weather doesn’t make the ideal vacation. Prior to your visit I had a new satellite installation of Dish Network. My son stayed at the cabin the day before you arrived and it was working fine. The remote control on Dish Network is not very user friendly. You had problems getting reception and without my permission called Dish Network and set up an appointment for them to come up and service the device. I didn’t think it was right of Dish Network to allow you to access my account, but that is their policy. I spoke to the technician after the appointment and he said you had changed the channel on the TV so that it would not work and the huge storm had slightly moved the dish. He stated that you said you wanted me to refund you. After the repair you called me and tried to extort money from me, even though you stayed all 3 nights.
Because of your experience I decided to switch after a new 2 week Dish installation to Direct TV as it is more people friendly with a $420 earily cancellation fee. I had several other rentals before Direct could be installed and I warned them not to change the channel on the TV or they will not have any TV until it can be adjusted. The most common response I got was “they were not going to Big Bear to watch TV, there are a lot of other things to do”. I made the change to Direct asap and have had no problems.
On the front page of my VRBO/Homeaway listing right under the picture and in the description it states that the renter is required to bring their own sheets and towels. I guess you did not read the entire write up. I always also include the information again after payment in the rental information to make sure you are aware.
As far as the king bunk bed, the height is very standard and I have never had any complaint about it. The bed in the downstairs bedroom along with almost all the beds in the house are 2 years old. I am not sure what you did to make the box springs squeak.
When you rented the cabin you stated that there would be 6 adults and no children. After reading your review I find that there was a 2 year old, I don’t understand.
You are welcome to return and stay in our cabin anytime. I know you will not have the TV problem again and I hope the weather will be more to your liking.
