Cozy Lodge With Bistro, Live Music & Beach Access

Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort is located at the gateway to the world renowned Cabot Trail near Englishtown, Nova Scotia. Rated as the best island off of North America (by Travel and Leisure), Cape Breton is known for warm Maritime hospitality, a rich culture and incredible natural beauty.

Built in 2004, Cabot Shores offers 4 season, pet-friendly accommodations that are suitable for getaways, vacations, weddings and events, wellness retreats and a lot of fun and adventure.

Complete with a bistro and bar (specializing in vegetarian and vegan fare but also local seafood and fish), the Lodge also has a friendly Great Room with a cozy stone hearth where friends, family, colleagues and musicians will enjoy relaxing together. A stage and an assortment of instruments are available - we highly encourage music jams! Live music is also available on occasion with regular ceilidhs (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing Gaelic folk music and dancing) taking place only 3km away.

Cabot Shores guests are welcomed and informed by our staff, which we consider guides, and are given information on wildlife, itineraries and local events. Located in what is known as the 'artisans loop', you are a short distance from many local artist galleries, like iron works, glass blowing, leather works, jewelry, pottery and more. Guests are also near the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the Alexander Graham Bell museum, the Gaelic College and many other cultural and outdoor experiences and events.

Manager info

Year Purchased: 2004

About: Paul Weinberg is called Dr. Paul (a doctor in adventure travel and more formally in psychology). Formerly a 'road warrior' in the software industry, he reinvented himself as the owner and operator of a Wilderness Resort called Cabot Shores on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. He writes often about adventurers, explorers, artists native Mi'kmaq, guides and worldwide guests who live in and visit Cape Breton. His wife Barbara, an acupuncturist, directs Gate of Life Spa, a part of Cabot Shores and she writes primarily on women's health issues.

Why Englishtown, NS, Canada:
We visited friends from Toronto who were renting near the Gaelic College on Cape Breton. We hiked and swam up Indian Brook to the Great Falls and thought it was one of the most dramatic sites we'd seen in the world (including trips to Big Sur, the Riviera, Bali...) Five years later we returned and bought land, building Cabot Shores' chalet shortly after that.
