Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Imagine being in this luxurious mountain home surrounded by acres of private land and the Mendocino National Forest.  Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Pillsbury off the expansive back deck and Hull Mountain right at your front door. As you enter this ridge top home, you will immediately be drawn across the large open living space to the grand windows that rise from the floor to the soaring 20 foot vaulted ceiling with breathtaking views.

You will enjoy the quiet and solitude of this spacious home once the excitement of the view is absorbed by everyone. This home is very private, being the only house on the cul-de-sac, and within the gated community of Lake Pillsbury Ranch.  While this home is a summertime destination for sun worshipers and water sports enthusiasts, the other seasons of the year bring a different but equally visual and peaceful experience. This area has an exciting past and long history with presidents and hollywood stars because of its spectacular beauty and privacy year round.

The spacious fully equipped stainless steel and granite gourmet kitchen with prep island and all the amenities will wow even the most discerning chefs.  On the covered portion of the deck are a gas bar-b-que, café table and chairs, and lounge chairs on the open deck area.  With air conditioning and ceiling fans for summer, or the wood stove assisted by the warmth of passive solar heating on sunny days in the cooler months, you’ll find comfort in this ridge top home.

Oh… did I say that you are totally solar powered?? Yes you are, but you will never know it based on all the electronics and appliances in the house!  During the warmer months you may not need indoor activities as the deck and kitchen are usually the social areas, but if you do, there are three TVs, two on the main floor with satellite/DVD/VHS, and one upstairs with a DVD player for the evening movie watchers.  A collection of CDs, DVDs, and VHSs are available if you forget to pack your own.  Wireless internet is provided along with a work station for your laptop.

This home is great for two couples/families as it has separate bedrooms/bathrooms on each floor with king beds and living areas, and an additional half bath downstairs. The downstairs bedroom is a suite with master bath, walk-in closet, and jetted tub with lake views. Upstairs, the second bedroom has a slider that opens to a small lanai that allows you to enjoy the majestic views inside or out. The open upstairs loft is spacious and looks out over the lake and mountains through the many windows, with 2 additional beds (one king, one queen) for a house total of up to 8 guests.

During the summer, when you are relaxed and ready for outdoor activities, pack your lunch, towels and sun block, and head to the lake. Launch your ski or fishing boat, kayak or canoe and enjoy one of the most special summer lakes in the West. There are several options around the lake to set up day camps, or access the lake for swimming or floating. Lake Pillsbury Resort can provide you with your outing needs of ice, ice cream, drinks, beer, chips and snacks from Memorial Day thru Labor Day, but there are no restaurants, grocery stores or food service in the Lake Pillsbury basin at this time. Best to shop for your needs in Ukiah or the Clearlake area before you make your way into the Lake Pillsbury area. The local Soda Creek store is open most of the year for basic convenience items and is located at the end of the dirt road coming in from Potter Valley.

Lake Pillsbury has about 31 miles of shore line, big enough for everyone to enjoy with all the different water sports, but small enough and remote enough to have the lake to yourself during the week.  With the lake surrounded by mountains and forest, you can have the best of both worlds of calm smooth water on the west side, or afternoon breeze on the east side for the sailing enthusiasts. A boat launch ramp is within a few miles of the community, and overnight boat slip usage is available during your stay.

From spring thru fall, sunshine will lure you out on to the deck to put your feet up on the rail and relax with your cold drink or hot coffee and take in the panoramic views of Lake Pillsbury and the surrounding forest and mountains. Grab your binoculars and pick out the birds, deer, elk, fox or activity out on the lake.  On warm sunny days, you can take in the gorgeous sunsets, or stay out and watch the evening transform to a breathtaking night of star gazing. See the moon, constellations, and the Milky Way with an intensity most have never experienced.

In the spring you can enjoy the lush green meadows, and in fall the colorful turning of the oaks weaved in-between the evergreens.  Bring your mountain bikes or take a long walk through the community roads that will give you choices of 13 miles of easy or advanced walking/biking surfaces.  Explore outside the gates to some historic hiking trails or OHV trails in the national forest just a short drive away.  Other popular activities in the basin include hunting, fishing and hang gliding from the 7000 ft Hull Mountain.  Winter can bring on some snowy fun where the whole Lake Pillsbury basin turns a frosty white.  At 2000 ft, the snow is usually a day or two of entertainment with a 4X4 vehicle highly recommended to enter or exit the area.

About Maryann

Michael and I have lived at Lake Pillsbury for over 20 years. As native Northern Californians, we vacationed here as kids and young adults. Now Grandparents, with our own 'Pillsbury Kids' and their 'Pillsbury Kids', we all share a love for this peaceful, serene and secluded hidden gem in the Mendocino National Forest.

Maryann purchased this house in 2002

Why Maryann chose California

We built this home together in the early 2000's while managing the 800 acre gated community it lies within. We Lived here most of the time, but did travel some of the years for solar consulting projects and shared our house with friends and family while gone. Now that we are back and manage the Lake Pillsbury Resort, we have opened our home to spring, summer and fall guests as we spend most of our time just down the road at the Resort with summer guests and projects before and after the Resorts summer season.

What makes this house unique

We really enjoy sharing our house with guests experiencing the beauty of the forest and lake for the first time and in such a comfortable fashion. The best are the 'Pillsbury Moms' who have been camping around the lake for years, but now get the Pillsbury experience with the 'luxuries of home' - big comfy beds, hot showers, a grand kitchen and a view to die for high above the dirt.

Relaxed, Deluxe Accommodation in the Wilderness

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay at The View. Beautiful house with breathtaking views over Lake Pillsbury from every room and the deck. The house is modern, nicely designed and furnished, in great condition and very well equipped. Layout is very practical for a group or family setup. Our favorite activity was hanging out on the deck relaxing and enjoying the view.

This was our chance to explore Lake Pillsbury area and we loved it. Definitely an outdoor / nature area - loved seeing the Tule Elk and various other animals in the valley. While a high clearance 4x4 is not required, if you have one you can explore some of the Jeep trails in the area, including the drive up Hull Mountain. Or just explore the wildlife and hiking opportunities in the Gravelly Valley area (no 4x4 needed).

As noted in other reviews, you do need to be organized - do your shopping before you head into Mendocino Forest and make sure you are setup for your whole stay. You are off the beaten track and there are no "quick trips" to the store - but that is part of the appeal.

And many thanks to the hosts Maryann and Michael - they were very organized, welcoming and helpful. Provided as much privacy as you wanted but always available and happy to answer any questions you might have.

If you are after a luxury stay in the wilderness, I highly recommend The View.

Owner's Response: Thanks Paul for being a truly wonderful guest. I give you 5 stars also, and welcome your return. Glad you got to do some exploring in your jeep up on Hull Mountain and got to see where the hang gliders launch from, and the awesome view of the whole Lake Pillsbury basin. Checking out the many Elk in the meadows while all is still green and lush with wildflowers, is just the icing on the cake for a late spring Lake Pillsbury adventure.

Outstanding vacation, need to be better oreoared

  • 5 of 5

Need caveats for address, obtaining provisions prior to going home, three hour + trip for anything you might not have brought with you.

Also, surprised when discovered outdoor fun range in the valley, we were trying tiger away from firework on the 4th of July because of pet anxiety - better than being in Sacramento.

This is the definition of off the grid, caused anxiety for electrical use and a/c.

Beautiful adventure drive on last 1.5 hour part of the trip, definitely not for any vehicle with low clearance and 4WD.

These minor detractors aside, it was a great stay in a beautiful home, with exceptional views, and unbelievable star watching and relaxing.

Defiantly looking forward to our next visit

Owner's Response: We were very happy that you chose our home for your escape from the big city for the 4th of July and all those fireworks (for those reading this review, no fireworks are allowed in the Mendocino National Forest or within the community). I hope your pooches had a relaxing stay with you while you enjoyed the view and quiet; well, except for the busier than normal activity at the USFS approved shooting area during the holiday. We are definitely off the beaten path, so provisioning before you get out of town is imperative. As a totally solar powered home, being aware of power usage and thinking conservatively will surely make for a smooth and enjoyable experience. Thanks so much, and we look forward to your visit again.

Relax in nature and in comfort!

  • 5 of 5

Nine girlfriends met at this house for a weekend to take a break from busy lives and take time to relax and catch-up. The house was plenty large with multiple sleeping options for us all to spread out comfortably. The kitchen with the high-end cook top (and outdoor grill) was fun for cooking meals, the large table allowed us all to sit down for meals together, the deck overlooking the views was enjoyable for relaxing over a glass of wine, and the nearby walks in Snowy Mountain Wilderness were perfect for exploring nature. Maryann and Michael were so gracious and patient with all of our questions prior to accessing the house. I will definitely go back with the family and pups, and next time inquire more about their solar operation!

Owner's Response: Nice to meet most of the group on your arrival. Loved that some of you ventured out into the beautiful National Forest, and also did some local exploring right in the community. Wine, food and friends all go well together in a private relaxing environment, and yes, solar is cool!

Enchanted Place

  • 5 of 5

We were two couple with two dogs spending 3 nights, in this magical place. The view is spectacular, the house is fully equipped (that's an understatement...), with a HUGE kitchen and great bedrooms.

The owners hospitality was flawless...

If you want a city get away - choose THIS place!

Glad you enjoyed having bedrooms both up and down plus living space in both, which makes for a great shared couples retreat.

Amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I decided we needed some time away from the big city and decided to head to Lake Pillsbury. Despite having seen the images provided here, both him and I couldn't believe the views from the house. Not only are the views great, but the house has everything you could possibly ever need.

Oh and the beds.....the beds.....I have never slept so well. Maryann was an incredible asset and aide during our stay. She let us know what activities were in the area, and even took some great pictures of my boyfriend and I out on the water- they kindly let us use their kayaks. The fog in the morning, the stars at night, and the quiet 24/7 are reasons enough to go back. This house makes you feel like you're comfortably nestled in a quiet natural sanctuary. Long story short, if you want to get away, experience serenity and natural beauty, all while being 100x's more comfortable than you could be at any top hotel, this is the place for you.

Owner's Response: This was quite the adventure for you two, and thank you for choosing “The View” for your first stop on your getaway. Coming from the east coast to San Francisco and then heading straight up to Lake Pillsbury for your retreat after your long day was impressive. We were so glad you enjoyed your visit and the weather was warm enough that you got to do a little kayaking. Love the fog in the morning in late fall and even had a time-lapse video made for this site to show how cool it is (thanks to another wonderful guest who came just after your visit). Please keep us in mind if you plan another Northern California adventure as we would love to have you again.
