Set off the beaten path, this southern-style home on Pictou Island is available for weekly rentals, and is perfect for families seeking to re-connect with each other and nature. Situated on the shore of the Northumberland Strait, overlooking 540 ft. of some of the most beautiful water-front Nova Scotia has to offer, this beach house on Canada's east coast comes with acres of solitude and all you basically need for the island to feel like a home you'll want to keep coming back to ...
Pictou Island is 5 miles long, 1 1/2 miles wide, and is situated halfway between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. It is home to eight families year round, and most households are sustained in part by the spring lobster fishery (in May & June).
As the island is only accessible by passenger ferry, owners of this property are happy to provide guests with access to bicycles for getting around the island. More info about the island and how to get here available upon request. Or, for ferry schedule, click on below link.
The master bedroom is spacious, there's plenty of room for the queen-size bed and cozy reading area. There's a seated shower stall in the ensuite. There's a double in the other main guest, situated to make the most of this room's restful view of the water and adjacent wild-flower meadow. West of the property is one of the nicest beaches on the island . The third bedroom is ideal for kids with its twin bunks. There's a built-in tub & shower surround unit in the main bathroom.
The kitchen is well-equipped, as there is no corner store to run to on the island. Expect to find for your convenience essential ingredients; flour, sugar, salt, pepper and a variety of herbs and spices to help make all your meals in this home special. Having a kitchen that's open to the dining/living area, with everyone together, is also sure to add to your family's meal-time enjoyment.
Need some quiet time too? Well this home's large screened-in porch is an especially good place to sneak away to, with your book and a cool drink. And, remember, with the beach 'right there', you can always go for a swim ... 'shop' for seaside treasures. For others, simply viewing and heeding the water's soothing sounds will be enough.
Next to the screened-in porch, there's an open cedar-deck area too, especially good for out-door lounging, star-gazing at night, having a barbeque ANY time. West of the property is one of the nicest beaches on the island .
Best of all: a visit to Pictou Island means guests get to experience first-hand exactly how easy environmentally-friendly living can be, when the house is solar-powered to provide you with all the necessary amenities and conveniences. There's also an easy-to-use generator on-site to run this home's washer.
Chances are, here, weary consumers will be happy. With NO STORE of any description on the island, there's nothing commercial to detract from sandy beaches and the warmest water north of the Carolinas.
Pictou Island is also a perfect escape from the pressures of modern life in the cooler months. So why not come see for yourself why a lot of the locals actually prefer autumn in Nova Scotia. Its warm days, clear skies, and stiff breezes make it ideal for artists, sailors and all out-door enthusiasts alike.

"... stayed in a lot of places around the world, having been in the military, and I can honestly say I have never had a more relaxing and more accommodating host. I'm only sorry we didn't stay longer ... Your home is wonderful but it really is your attention to detail and the way you make your guests at ease that make the vacation that much better."
We spent a fantastic week in this beautiful beach house with family on Pictou Island. Everything was as described and the hosts made us feel so welcome. This is the perfect spot to relax, enjoy the beaches, ocean and running around the island. Unplug and go and make memories that will last a lifetime. We hope to return!
The Pictou Island Beach House is the epitome of a getaway. Ever since we discovered this luxurious rental years ago we have made a point to return each summer. Pictou Island is a world of its own: home to a small, tight-knit community that is outnumbered by its large population of bunnies. The island is perfect for anyone who likes to unplug (although the community centre down the road offers wifi when you need it!
The open-concept beach house gives its occupants the feeling that they are always on the beach. Picture windows show unbelievable views of the ocean and before we started staying at the beach house we had never seen whales from our dinner table. The cottage has three beautifully decorated bedrooms and its own little library of books (many containing Pictou Island history and artwork). The bright and open kitchen, dining room, and living room make it easy to cook while enjoying each other’s company. The entire house is picturesque but no part is as perfect as the screened-in porch. Lined with Muskoka chairs the screened-in porch, which faces the ocean, allows its inhabitants to reach maximum levels of relaxation. One of our favourite things about our Pictou Island vacations is being able to enjoy a morning coffee, an evening glass of wine, or even a sit-down dinner while still experiencing the fresh ocean air.
There are trails for walking or biking and seemingly endless stretches of beach and rocks to wander down, but no matter how you choose to spend your time on the island you are bound to be more relaxed than ever before. Staying at the Pictou Island beach house will always to be the best vacations we have ever had!
July 2006 - just spent a lovely week of total relaxation. The cottage is lovely with its airy rooms, beautiful views and screened in porch. Spent many long hours walking along the private beach - enjoyed the friendliness of everyone as well. Thank you for providing us with a perfect place to rest and relax. We will miss the sound of the ocean and the breeze off the porch the most. Hope to go back one day....
This vacation had it all - for parents and children: beautiful beaches; georgeous, immaculate and comfortable cottage; and helpful hosts. The week our family spent exploring, swimming, snorkelling, beachcombing, and reading and relaxing in the sun room went by much too fast!
My family and I have vacationed on Pictou Island the last three summers and consider it the perfect family-centered get-away. We have three children ages 10, 14 and 16 and we never heard them say they were bored. Low tide would arrive just steps from our door and they'd be off for hours, playing in the warm and gentle surf. The beaches here in Maine are beautiful, but the water is too cold and rentals are prohibitively expensive. We found we could afford three weeks on Pictou Island for every one on the Maine coast. Wonderful hosts, gorgeous views and no traffic! Why go anywhere else?
Bicycles provided,Birdwatching, Fishing (off the island's main wharf), Snorkeling & Diving and (because water on this side of the island fairly well-protected) just about any water-sport you can think of (provided guests bring their own gear), take the ferry to town & spend the day picking up supplies, tripping around the Pictou/New Glasgow area, The historic town of Pictou, better known as the Birthplace of New Scotland, is home to a replica of the first ship 'Hector' and the nearby interpretative centre is worth the visit, Sail-boat charters also available in and around Pictou Harbour, Note, in May and June, live lobster available, and fishing an 'activity' you might not want to miss
