About Jane Mickelson - Owner

Native to Door County but now living 3 hours away Paul & I wish we could spend more time there. Paul grew up in Ephraim and I vacationed summers in Door County as a young girl. I met Paul after my parents purchased their summer home next to Pauls home in Ephraim. We were married in Baileys Harbor in the summer of '74.

Jane Mickelson - Owner purchased this house in 2011

Why Jane Mickelson - Owner chose Ellison Bay

We had to do something exciting on 1-11-11 so we signed the paperwork for what might be our retirement home. Ellison Bay with it's cameo appearance in the movie,(Feed the Fish) just seemed to be the place in Door County that felt so good to us both. It's relatively quiet compared to the other towns and villages in northern Door which is a plus.

What makes this house unique

Looking back at the summer season of 2011 Paul & I enjoyed interacting with all of our guests. We learned, listened and tried to be the best we could and will continue to adjust to meet everyones needs. 2012 brings some improvements that should make your stay at Birch Haven more enjoyable. Air conditioning along with removing and installing laminate flooring in the living room, with a furniture upgrade will be the start of other improvements in the future. We always welcome requests, suggestions, and comments that might make your next stay with us just that much nicer. All returning guest receive 10% off any future stays.

Perfect comfortable hideaway

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at your home loved the layout, it felt spacious and open. Since there were only 2 of us we only used the master bedroom the mattress was comfortable. I also liked your heating and cooling system. The house was well stocked with everything one would need even a mixer in case someone had the urge to bake. We enjoyed being able to walk to the Viking for breakfast and Mink River for burgers. We had a nice bonfire in backyard one night, also enjoyed parks , orchards and visiting craft fair in Sister Bay. Would love to come back to Birch Haven

Birch Haven most enjoyable

  • 5 of 5

We, 3 sisters come to Door Co every Sept when it is a little more quiet than mid summer. We have stayed in most of the towns and at all different homes. We found Birch Haven to be ideal for us. We each like our own bedroom. The home was clean and bright. The kitchen had everything needed should anyone decide to cook on vacation. Because of the fantastic weather this year we were able to enjoy many different beaches. Most days we packed up and headed out until just before dark, spending 1 day at Washington Island. We would definitely come back to this location. One suggestion would be to get a DVD player as summer TV leaves something to desired.

Great property and location

  • 5 of 5

We travel a lot using VRBO and reserve 5 star reviews for places that exceeded our expectations. Birch Haven did this in several ways.

The kitchen is truly well equipped with a wide variety of good quality pots, pans, utensils. This is an amenity that we have found is frequently over stated so we were pleased to find a kitchen was all it was claimed to be.

The layout is ideal with one king bedroom and bath on the opposite side of the house than the other bedrooms. This allowed for some privacy between us and the rest of our group.

There was ice both in the freezer and available via the frig ice maker. This is an oft overlooked amenity and we were pleased that it was so easy to pack up our perishable souvenirs (i.e. cherries).

The property is on a road off 42, making for quick and easy travel around door county. But there is very little traffic on the road and the location is very quiet.

And finally, Jane was very responsive to any question or concern.

Map

Ellison Bay with it's small town charm is where you will find small town friendliness. If you like northern Door but opt for a slower more relaxed place, Ellison Bay is what you would be looking for. Birch Haven is just a short walk to the village center. There you will find 4 distinctly different restuarants, all with their own mouth watering meals. The little country store carries most everything you might have forgotten or ran out of. The beach located at the south end of town is always clean and inviting. There is 'hard cider' tastings just a couple of blocks away along with an interesting cooking school for the cook that has interest in adding to their talent. Ellison Bay which is located on the 'bay' side of the pennisula offers the resources of Green Bay for fishing and boating and a short drive to the east will put you on the waters of Lake Michigan. A 10 minute ride to the north will put you in Gills Rock, home to many of the local commercial fisherman. And from there a short drive to the dock at Newport for the ride on the ferry to Washington Island. A short walk from Birch Haven is a small town park with a large open area for ballgames, a playground, and tennis courts. So whether you looking for a quiet relaxing vacation or one with many options for activies your stay at Birch Haven will meet your expentations.
