|Minimum Stay||6 nights|
This exquisite three-story lake-front home is both cozy and spacious. Enjoy an incomparable view as you relax on the deck. Gather in front of the one-of-a-kind, floor-to-ceiling brick and stone fireplace. Randomwood's open floor plan allows a lucky cook to prepare a meal in the spacious, fully equipped kitchen (also with a lake view) and still be part of the social action. You'll see unforgettable sunsets over Fourteen Island Lake from the hand-made dining table, which can seat fourteen.
On the main floor, a high, peaked wood ceiling crowns the living room, where you will also find a fold-out couch should you want to sleep by the fire on a cool night. There are two bedrooms on this floor: a master bedroom with a view of the lake, a balcony and an attached bath, and a second bedroom with double bed and view of the woods. Also on this floor, you'll find a washer and dryer, and a half-bath. The deck runs the full width of the house, and a graceful gazebo provides a perfect place for reading, napping, or just gazing. Relax with a puzzle in the screened porch, and listen to the breeze, and the loons, and the gentle lake sounds.
Upstairs is the other master bedroom, with attached bath. This room boasts a skylight, walk-in closet and balcony, with a breathtaking view of the lake. Also on this floor a kid friendly bedroom with a comfortable queen size bed and couch which folds down into another full sized bed. There is a memory foam covering to make this fold-out even more comfortable.
Downstairs, there's a large, carpeted main room, where there's to watch a DVD or Video. You'll find a large selection of movies in the house library. This room is often used as a 'playroom'. (though it can also serve as another bedroom). There's a tent, puzzles, games, toys, even an indoor basketball hoop.
In addition, there are two lake-view bedrooms; one with a Queen sized bed and the other with two twin beds which can be converted into one King-sized bed. There is also a full bath with tub.
Swim from the dock, or take the canoe or kayak around the many lovely islands. Explore the six and a half acres of woods where you can climb the trees or skate on the pond in the winter.
Badminton and volleyball can be played in the open yard. Watch for bald eagles, and the ospreys who return to Fourteen Island year after year.

We live in Los Angeles where we work in the entertainment industry. We love the fruit trees in our garden but desperately miss the seasons. Our house in Canada gives us a chance to have that too. In summer we swim, canoe, lie on the dock and listen to the loons. In the winter we skate on the lake, or on the pond in our woods, cross country ski and drink hot chocolate by the fire. In the fall it's almost impossible to do anything but stare at the amazing colors of the trees ringing` the lake. There is never a bad time to be up at the cottage and never a time when it's easy to leave.
Elaine Aronson purchased this cottage in 1996
Curtis's grandmother was Canadian and he spent many of his summers on Rideau Lake (about 1 1/2 north). I am from Boston and spent all my summers in New England. We wanted our daughter to be able to have a similar experience so when our friends, who had built a house on 14 Island Lake, told us there was a property available, we jumped at the chance to build our own.
Being at the lake gives us a chance to turn off the computer (we only recently installed a phone) and put the 24-hour world on hold. We get to spend real quality time with our friends and family and with each other. We like that it takes some time to get there. Makes it that much more special once you're there.
The house was designed with two master bedrooms because we share it with Lily's godparents. Almost all the handmade furniture as well as the tree house was designed and made by Lily's godfather. We love the communal feeling in our home and most times we're there, the other rooms are filled with friends or family joining us from California, Detroit, New York, Boston or London (to name a few). We love swimming and lying around during the day, then bringing everyone together for a big dinner and the evening activity -- usually a game like Dictionary or Password. Other nights, we pick up one of the many instruments around and have a good old-fashioned sing!
There's always a chance of a late night swim (or skate, depending on the season).
Unlike many lakes in our area, 14 Island Lake is extremely quiet and clean because there is very limited boat launch access - only a two week window at the beginning of the summer. As a result, we do not have day visitors buzzing our lake with noisy jet skis and power boats.
If the weather is bad or you need a change of pace, we like to head in to Kingston for some shopping on Princess street and lunch at Pan Chancho or our favorite Irish Pub the Tir na Nog. At night, you can go to a good old fashioned drive-in movie or take the Kingston Ghost Walk (our daughter Lily's favorite).
Other day trips might include a visit to Ottawa, the Provincial capital, about a 1 1/2 hour drive or making the slightly longer 2 1/2 hour drive to explore Toronto -- a world-class city with fine dining and Museums. You can also save yourself the drive and take the train.
Another choice would be to ferry over to Prince Edward County and visit Picton and the the provincial park. White sandy beaches and dunes provide the perfect backdrop to swimming in the pristine waters of Lake Ontario. Were it not for the lack of salt - you would swear you were swimming in the ocean.
We all already want to go back and we only left 5 days ago. From the moment we stepped into the cottage, every one of us felt at home. The cottage is perfect for an extended family getaway, it's spotless and homey, and the lake is gorgeous. We were close enough to shopping to restock the fridge whenever we needed to, but far enough that our week felt like a real escape. And that hammock is a definite MUST! Everyone took turns relaxing, napping, or reading in the hammock.
The water is deep and clear, right off the dock - perfect for cannonballs - and the lake is manageable for daily canoeing or kayaking. This is a definite favourite among all our cottage stays!
I second another reviewer's remark about the photos not doing the cottage justice! i was really worried booking this place without seeing it prior for our family celebration and the cottage superseded our expectations. We went to Kingston for my brother's military school graduation and was looking for a place to celebrate with our family and we had an amazing 4 days. The beautiful scenery, cottage set up and all the facilities was remarkable. Randomwood is a must experience for family and friends.
The photos do not do this beautiful cottage justice! Our stay was one of the most memorable experiences and this was not only due to great company but the atmosphere of a homie, humble cottage. The lake and view was perfect especially watching the sun rises and sun sets on the dock! Everything we ever needed was graciously provided, the residents was immaculately clean upon arrival, the place was spacious and comfortably slept our 9 guests and could have easily accommodated 14. It had everything we needed and everything we wanted such as canoes, kayaks (life jackets also provided), fishing gear, board games, music, literature, movies, fresh towels and linens, fully stocked kitchen and much more. I've been to a few cottages in my time and Randomwood tops the list! It was definitely worth the 3 hour drive from Toronto! We loved everything and look forward to booking again in the near future!
First impressions are lasting impressions
Our first impression was that this is going to be a wonderful place to spend our time at, and indeed this was the lasting impression. Our time at Randomwood came to an end much too soon, and that is always the indication of a good holiday.
Our stay was in early October, not typical cottage season, and it was like we had the lake to ourselves. When paddling on the lake we were the only boat on the water, we could walk the immediate roads without meeting any traffic. We were blessed with exceptional weather and the solitude and fall colours only enhanced the natural beauty of Randomwood’s location.
Randomwood was the ideal venue for our family reunion. It was spacious and well equipped. There are also large and fascinating collections of literature, music and video which combined with the décor and good company make time spent indoors very enjoyable. All in all it was a memorable time.
One of the gauges we use about the quality of a family vacation is the response from our children when asked about returning. How about "yes! when are we coming back!" Three grandparents 6 siblings ages 10-25 and my wife and I had plenty of room to spread out, have space when needed, and all be together for meals, games and movies. We went on walks, runs, family swims around the island in front of the cabin, canoed, kayaked and enjoyed great fishing off the dock. We were lucky to be there the evening a family down the lake put on a spectacular fireworks display! What a great way to end the week. What a great vacation.!!!
Randomwood was terrific. We thoroughly enjoyed all the amenities and the property is a delight. There were 14 of us at one point and there was plenty of room for all. The kitchen is also well equipped to cook for the masses. The tree fort was a huge hit!
