Overview

About the property

Farmhouse, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

Rusticate in style at Fox Hollow Farm! This comfortably elegant old farmhouse has been lovingly renovated and is fully equipped with all mod cons, from wi-fi, smart TV, and bluetooth stereo to fully-equipped gourmet kitchen. Surrounded by woods and fruit trees and views of the mountains of Acadia, the house is only a half-hour away from Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, but serene and secluded enough for a walk or bike ride down quiet country roads to our local sandy beach or our swimming hole. As of Spring 2017, we’ve completed some significant upgrades to the house, including a stylishly remodeled bathroom, new high-performance washer/dryer, and fresh paint in several rooms.

Inside the House: The story goes that the sunroom was originally the General Store for the area in the late 1700s; the shelves today display vintage glassware. The bright, open kitchen is a favorite spot to hang out, with bench seats around the table and and beautiful views of Sargeant Mountain. The decor is elegant, cheerful, and comfortable. Each room is painted a different color. Vintage furniture includes incredibly comfy couches, a large desk, and seating for up to six. Whimsical details throughout the house are designed to bring a smile.

Outside: The farmhouse is on two+ acres surrounded by open grass and a big red barn, with not a neighbor in sight. A front porch under the lilacs provides a pleasant spot to relax in one of the Adirondack chairs and take in the surrounding beauty. The back patio, with a new picnic table and setee, makes for memorable evening gatherings and barbecues. The fragrant perennial garden out front attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. The wildlife here is spectacular: you’re likely to spot eagles, osprey, and a variety of warblers in the woods. Foxes and deer are not uncommon; we’ve also seen moose, bear and bobcat from the kitchen window. At dusk, you may hear the drumming of a grouse or the ethereal song of a thrush. Fireflies provide lively evening entertainment. Spring brings the timberdoodles and spring peepers, and in the autumn, the foliage is phenomenal. Outdoor amenities also include a charcoal barbecue, kayaks, bicycles, beach chairs, and coolers. You'll also find croquet, bocce ball, and horseshoes to take out on the lawn.

Some of our prior guests' comments:

“This was truly one of our most wonderful family vacations. The farmhouse is gorgeous, the property lovely and the location absolutely perfect.”

“Family meals in the kitchen, frisbee in the yard, and Lamoine State Beach were excellent things to do. Thank you for your tasteful and welcoming place.”

“What a great place! We loved exploring the house and yard. The kids picked raspberries along the periphery, and we had a terrific football game in front of the barn.”

“We feel like we've found a real jewel. None of us was ready to leave, and we can't wait to come back!”

About Phillip and Lee

We fell in love with Maine a few years ago when Lee's Mom moved to the area. Even though we both grew up in California, we each have family roots in New England and we feel a deep connection to the region. We're currently splitting our time between San Francisco and the farmhouse.

Phillip and Lee purchased this farmhouse in 2004

Why Phillip and Lee chose Acadia

Having been longtime renters in San Francisco, we wanted a home to call our own. In the summer of 2004 we became lost on the way to Lamoine Beach, and found this house for sale. Lee still plans to actually farm the land one day, when she quits her day job!

What makes this farmhouse unique

This house has an undeniably positive energy about it. Every year that we return we recognize it. Whether it's something about the layout of the house, its southerly orientation facing Sargeant Mountain, or something deep in the old wood rafters and beams, this house instills a sense of peace, wholeness, and joy. We can't help but imagine the many generations of families and friends here over the years have felt the same way.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you, as always, for lending us your lovely and welcoming home. For one week a year it has become our home away from home, a refuge from the trials and sadness of life. We greet this house joyfully every year and leave it regretfully, but full of hope for another year's respite and joy and lovely peace!

New family member Otis loved the crib. Smell of the air, red chairs on the porch -- citronella candles for evenings -- OMG, I look forward to the hammock here all year.

Perfect house to get away and still be close enough to great things to do in Maine!

  • 5 of 5

The house is exactly as pictured. An adorable home with plenty of room for everyone. We weren't here much beyond sleeping but we always seemed to congregate around the kitchen table. The house is cozy and inviting and the owners have been great to deal with.

When/if we ever come back to Maine, we plan to stay here again!

Thanks for a great holiday!

Charming farmhouse, isolated location, striking distance to everything

  • 5 of 5

My wife, our ten and seven year old children, our dog, and I spent a wonderful and relaxing week in Lamoine. The farmhouse is rustic and charming. The property offers children lots of opportunities to play and explore. The stars are amazing. While rustic, modern amenities are also available: WIFI, satellite TV, and a bluetooth stereo receiver.

There are a number of things to do that are minutes away. Lamoine Beach and Raccoon Cove are spots for foraging clams and mussels, kayaking, or watching the sunrise.

While my daughter painted the sunrise at Lamoine Beach, I foraged some rose hips and we made rose hip jam, adding some of the crab apples that grow behind the farmhouse for pectin.

There's al fresco pizza available at the nearby goat farm, Seal Cove Farm. There are fresh egg sellers and lobster boils along the road on the way into Elseworth.

Elseworth has super markets for stocking up and Roster Brother's for gourmet cheese, cold cuts and dry goods. They have excellent coffee. We had lunch at Serendib, a Sri Lankan restaurant, in Elseworth, which was very, very good.

We visited Acadia three times and it's about a 30 minute drive to the Mt. Desert Island part of the park. We also visited Scoodic Point which is a longer drive, but well worth a visit.

The Down East Maine Coast is a beautiful place, affording many opportunities for good times and good food. We'll definitely be back and would stay at Fox Hollow again.

Other things worth checking out:

- Acadia Deep Sea Fishing, they send you home with lobster from their traps. It's a rather long trip and not the best if you're prone to sea sickness

- J & P's Farm Market in Trenton, good local produce, frozen Herring Brothers steaks.

- Morning Glory Bakery in Bar Harbor

True Taste of Country

  • 4 of 5

This was our first visit to this part of Maine, and we fell in love with the whole Mount Desert Island area but especially with Acadia. We enjoyed the view from Cadillac Mountain, but especially loved getting up close and personal with the ocean, at Thunder Hole and at the tide pools at Wonderland. We went on an awesome whale-watching tour out of Bar Harbor and enjoyed walking around, soaking up the touristy atmosphere of the town. We also made a trip to Fort Knox and the Penobscot Observatory, both of which were impressive.

Since we were only in the area for 3 days, we spent most of our time out and about, but what time we did have at the house was great - it had everything we needed except drinking water, which was easily remedied. The property is beautiful and there isn't a neighbor in sight, which was nice. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any wildlife around the house, just a woodpecker and other birds. There's an extensive collection of books of all sorts in the front hall for your reading pleasure, along with games and a few toys. The house was a comfortable temperature for the most part; the fans came in handy for making the bedrooms comfortable for sleeping. The new refrigerator is freaking awesome, and it was so handy to have a washer and dryer on site. We also really appreciated having a cooler and some already frozen "blue ice" we could borrow.

On the downside, the downstairs shower didn't have much water pressure (I didn't try the upstairs one), and the water tends to smell a bit . . . cottage-y . . . but no big deal. It was a bit inconvenient not to have cell phone service, but the homeowners have made sure there is a landline available. Wi-fi wassn't working great for us - sometimes fast, sometimes slow, and sometimes not at all. Same with Netflix. Nothing that was a deal breaker, and we'd come back in a heartbeat to enjoy this taste of Maine country living and to be so conveniently located by Bar Harbor and Acadia.

Owner's Response: Thanks Sharon! Glad you had a good trip. Apologies about the wi-fi (and associated Netflix): it is usually blazing fast (and the envy of our neighbors!), so we will complain to our ISP about this. Glad you understand about the cell phone reception--it's part of the reality of being in a rural location. Nevertheless, we will get that wi-fi looked at. Come back and visit again any time!

Beautiful + historic farm house worth checking out

  • 5 of 5

I honestly couldn't have been happier with my recent visit. My mom and brother joined me and we all

were taken back by the peaceful environs. We travelled up to Acadia a few times(which is about 30 minutes away) but I enjoyed hanging out at the farm and especially cooking with my family. The photos really don’t do it justice - the farm is spacious, very well decorated and surrounded by beauty. Phillip and Lee were also easy to communicate with.

Highly recommended!

A Great Week in DownEast Maine and Acadia

  • 5 of 5

We've been heading up to Acadia for years and have stayed on-Island and off in a number of places. Lamoine and Raccoon Cove are among our favorite places. Quiet and off the beaten track, yet really just minutes to anywhere you want to go. We spent 5 days in the park hiking and biking our favorite places, one day at Raccoon Cove with beach chairs and kayaks provided by our hosts, and another day on the Schoodic Peninsula about 45 minutes northeast. We had never visited that part of Acadia before and really enjoyed the best lobster rolls in the center of Winter Haven.

This home is on a quiet rural paved road with a 15 minute walk to the cove. It's old, but has been lovingly maintained and updated. Everything you need is there...washer and dryer, dishwasher (a small one) everything for cooking, fast wifi and a big tv with Netflix although we barely used it. The couches are comfy as advertised, and the home is filled with great books and interesting artwork. The upstairs bedrooms have sloped ceilings since it's an old home but we didn't mind. The beds were all reported to be comfortable. Everything was very clean. We loved to open the dutch door to the kitchen porch to let in the clean Maine air and beautiful morning light each day. We also enjoyed the hummingbirds outside the kitchen window in the awesome flower garden. Don't miss Seal Cove Goat Farm up the road for their cheese and wood-fired pizzas!
