Views of Black Mesa from the Hot Tub, great for FAMILIES

Bedrooms 5
Space 3,000 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 4 Bathrooms, (Sleeps 10-14)

Welcome to your own private desert resort. This 5-bedroom luxury home overlooking the Rio Grande Valley, Jemez Mountains, and the Black Mesa. Includes an outdoor hot tub, indoor sauna, private flagstone patio, vine-covered pergola, a rock goldfish pond, custom-made iron gates, and breathtaking views from nearly every window.

Designed by the Chicago architect William Keck in 1942, the passive-solar building originally was the Los Alamos schoolhouse (where the children of the Manhattan Project studied) before being moved to this spur of land above the Rio Grande. The modern kitchen includes a double oven and a copper-hooded restaurant-style stove, while the dining room seats 12 and has a massive stone fireplace. Navajo rugs, art pieces, and paintings decorate the house, which includes a sunny living room (also with a fireplace) and a private study, while the bedrooms and four full bathrooms are each furnished in a distinct style. A sun room leads out to the patio, hot tub and views. Both wings have their own master bedroom with private bath, as well as a washer dryer.

A short stroll through the cottonwoods takes you to the Rio Grande; the famous El Santuario de Chimayo is 15 minutes away, Santa Fe is a beautiful 25-minute drive, Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs is 30 minutes away, and Taos lies 45 minutes to the north as does Georgia O'Keefe's Ghost Ranch. Three ski areas are in the vicinity as well. But you may want to stay home and enjoy the views.

We own and operate a Professional Photography business as well.

We specialize in Family and Wedding photography.

We WELCOME weddings and parties for an additional event fee of $750 per event. Three night minimum on all events. Cleaning fee is $350. Property protection is $99 for events.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks so much. We had a fabulous weekend!

This house is wonderful. The views are breath-taking, hot tub was good and really enjoyed. The walk to the river was just right. Your house is amazing, gourmet kitchen, antiques and light fixtures, navajo rugs and pots, art and photos so special. Large table and plenty of dishes was so appreciated, beds and bedding, bathrobes and plenty of showers/tubs/sauna was perfect for our retreat.

Relaxing place to be.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at La Casa de la Esquela. The location of this property affords stunning views, as well as a peaceful and quiet environment to relax, read, and enjoy nature (humming birds galore, hawks/eagles/owls, bunnies, coyotes, and so forth). It was a great base to explore New Mexico, an easy to drive to unique places of interest nearby like the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio in Abiquiú, and Ghost Ranch a little further on. Taos is just over an hour drive north, and a visit to see Taos Pueblo is highly recommended. Also, cultural Santa Fe is only a half-hour drive (and I need to point out that every commute in New Mexico is an amazing experience, with varied and spectacular views; hard to keep one's eyes on the road!). Host offered great suggestions for where to dine and shop around in the region, and they nicely dropped-off some of their superb Swiss chard, kale, heirloom tomatoes and other garden goodies they grow, for me to enjoy during my stay. Arguably, the best wine shop in NM is about fifteen-minutes drive from the property (called Kokoman, and I recommend stocking-up there; much better selection than Trader Joe's). All in all, a most pleasant place to have called home for a week. Thank you for sharing with me!

Great house for a larger group! Plenty of room!

  • 4 of 5

The house is full of beautiful antiques and is very comfortable. They have most cooking supplies needed and lots of room to spread out without being on top of each other. When you turn off the road to go back to the house you think you must have taken a wrong turn. Then you come to a beautiful house with a stunning view!

Family reunion

  • 4 of 5

Our family reunion took place at this beautifully renovated schoolhouse. It was a wonderful place for us to gather multiple generations and build memories together during our week-long stay! We enjoyed being under one roof and the kitchen was a delightful place to gather and prepare our many communal meals. We appreciated having the different wings of the house to spread out our many families and young children.

Our host was always attentive to our needs and questions. Thank you for all your attention to detail and sharing this wonderful (school)house.

A wonderful place to stay, it exceeded our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Can you imagine 13 women all agreeing that this place was amazing? Well on our recent trip to Espanola our book group did exactly that! The house was extremely well equipped for all of our needs! We especially enjoyed the spaciousness of the house allowing for small group conversation, large group conversation and alone time. We enjoyed walks by the river, dipping in the hot tub and swinging in the hammock. One of our favorite things was being able to all eat a few meals as a large group together. The owner couldn't have been more hospitable or communicated more efficiently! I would definitely rent this place again! Thank you for sharing your amazing home with us!

Great space, gorgeous views, everything you need.

  • 5 of 5

This was great for large parties. It was a little far from Taos (about an hour), but close enough to Santa Fe. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked. I wish I would have known that the bed in the loft is only an air mattress. We would stay there again.

Pristine views and five star luxury. This is a must!

  • 5 of 5

We had an incredible experience at our stay here. The views of the Rio Grande Valley are amazing coupled with an incredible walk to the Rio Grande itself(bring bug spray). The house feels like home the minute you walk in… Great expenses, wonderful light, and a giant kitchen that would make grandma squeal! The details are everywhere here including plush robes and each of the bathrooms, a children's playroom To be the envy of the playground, and best of all a veranda that makes you never want to leave. It is such an easy drive to everything here. I can't recommend this home enough. Many thanks to Amrit for a warm welcome and delicious chard from the garden.
