Like most homes in the Ruidoso area, our home has no A/C because it is rarely warm enough to need more than a fan or open window.

Cozy Getaway

  • 4 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful time here in Ruidoso. The owners of the house were very nice and replied quickly to my inquiries prior to our stay. The view from the house is breathtaking and is away from noise but close enough to stores other attractions. It was easy to find and loved that it was right off the main road. The drive up to the house is very steep and we had a 12 passenger van that was a little scary going up and or down the hill to the house. Once in the house it is very charming, it was old but had what we needed. The wifi was hard to connect to we didn't have service most of the time we were at the house. It did get cold and because we didn't want any of our little ones to accidentally touch the space heaters we didn't have heat our first night there. We found the floor heaters along the base boards the next morning and those helped heat up the house. The kitchen wasn't as stocked as we hoped it would be, nevertheless that didn't stop us from having a great time. The instructions at the house left alot of questions but we just got a hold of the house care taker and she helped answer our questions. Overall we had a lovely time and would probably say its best to not have little ones under the age of 4 stay there. I say this because of the heaters, and all the rugs, our 1 year old tripped a dozen times walking around but was otherwise okay. The older kids had no problems and we all enjoyed the stay! Thank you for welcoming our family into your home.

Very spacious and private but issues with cleanliness.

  • 3 of 5

The house itself, the location, the time we had there, our interactions with the owners are all 5 stars. However the attention to detail with the cleanliness of the house would be 1 star.

The location of the house was the best part. It is very private and has a lot of room for the kiddos to run around outside. We loved the kitchen area, has a breakfast bar where we were able to enjoy most of our meals. Each room has its own heater which helped to keep the house warm and cozy.

We had issues with the cleanliness of the house as it seemed like it had not been cleaned in quite some time. We contacted the owners and they responded right away and did what they could to resolve our issues.

You will have to haul off your own garbage, which is something we did not know until after we had booked. Luckily someone in our party had a truck to take the trash.

Racing Weekend Stay

  • 3 of 5

We knew going in the place was old, which was okay with us, but it is in need of some repairs and extermination. The internet did not work at all and I needed it for work. The driveway was very rough with ruts that caused the cars to bottom out. The weeds were knee high and in the walkway. We had mice in both houses and some bugs in a bedroom. The floor in the bedroom of the small house is very weak where you first walk in. Both houses could use a thorough cleaning. There were only two TVs not three. Closet space was non existent in two bedrooms and the small house. The location was good and the setting very pretty. If the aforementioned items were fixed it would be a nice place to stay. We were concerned about no air conditioning, but it wasn't really a problem. There are fans and it was cool at night and we weren't there during the day.

Owner's Response: Joe we are very concerned about the conditions that you experienced. We are taking measures to deal with the lack of cleanliness & yard maintaince! We had no idea. This was not being keep up! We do have the house exterminated regularly so I'm surprised there were issues. The exterminators have already been called. If we had known the internet was down, we could have called the service provider for help. Overall this is a lack communication and upkeep from the folks caring for our home there and this will be remedied immediately !

Truly Ranch house Type Atmosphere

  • 4 of 5

Though leery after reading some of the reviews before confirming our reservation, being from W TX we are used to settled dust and understand houses that are vacant for some time and we rented the ranch house. We loved the isolation the location provided. The clean clear night air with views of the stars and sky. Day time had views of the surrounding hills and trees and saw some "critters" such as deer, rabbits, and bats.

The house did have a dusty odor and is not air conditioned but we were not there during the day time and the nights were plenty cool to sit around the fire pit and still wear sweaters. The big blessing was the lightening knocked out the WiFi the first day we were there and I discussed this with Linda and she explained it would be repaired.

The floors creaked and one bed was a little wobbly, but we were all able to gather together and eat, play games, visit or just chill.

We also took advantage of walking the property and the area and really enjoyed the environment. Truly an enjoyable experience and Thank you for hosting our stay. RR

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying at our home. We're glad you enjoyed your visit! the house is over 100 years old and it's in Dusty New Mexico so as much as we work to keep it spotless, it is definitely a ranch/historic home experience. And we're glad that you appreciated that and enjoyed yourselves! We hope you will be our guest again soon!

Great house, but not in summer

  • 4 of 5

Owner and caretaker was very accessible and wonderful to work with!!

We loved the house and guest house. Nice set up. The kitchen was especially great with lots of people. We loved the old southwest charm.

It was dusty as mentioned by a few people. We had to dust and shake out blankets on couches and beds, but it was clean. It is just typical desert dust in a house that accumulates without use plus off a busy road. Though up the hill and not real visible from road.

We couldn't find the trails, but enjoyed the walks around the property. Had a nice spot for capture the flag when it cooled down at night.

It was stocked with basics like toilet paper etc that was needed to get started.

Our only complaint was the heat. It said in the description that we wouldn't need an air conditioner. So we took it at face value. It hit the high 90s. It was literally miserable during the day. We would open the house at night to cool it down but it is an older house with little insulation and it wouldn't stay cool even with everything shut up early. One of our party went hiking the first day there and got overheated. We tried to get him hydrated and cooled down in a bath. He was doing a lot better, but then the heat of the house set him into a relapse and we almost had to go to the hospital. We had a second person pass out later that week. Because everyone was hot, we didn't feel like doing much. By the end of the week, people began to just get irritable. We couldn't cook at all in the house without making it even worse.

So I would highly recommend this house anytime BUT summer. Though I think this was not typical summer weather for the area.

However, we will never rent a house without air conditioning in the summer again.

On the up side, the restaurant recommended by the family was amazing! Gotta get those chicken enchiladas! The town was cute to walk through. Enjoyed the local pool! Highly recommend the horse ride at Bonito Lake through the mountains. We did that on one of the cooler days and was beautiful.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review & for being our guest. That is super hot for Ruidoso!! But I'm still sorry you all were uncomfortable. A large majority of houses in the Ruidoso area don't have A/C bc it's rarely hot. I'm sorry to hear about your friend who got over heated hiking! I hope he has recovered well. The dust is a constant battle in New Mexico & in an historic house 😩 We hope you'll be our guest again in the future!
