Framed by towering Georgia pines and marshes The Bluebird overlooks Horse Pen Creek and the Back River. The owners live in the main living quarters on the ground floor, which began as two army barracks, which were moved from historic Fort Screven in the 1940’s.
Former owner, George McDonald, an original girl scout who served under Juliette Gordon Low, purchased the cottage in the 1970’s. George was a spirited woman, a retired teacher who was very community focused. She was instrumental in getting Tybee’s named changed back from “Savannah Beach” to “Tybee”, as well as being a primary leader in initiating the restoration of the Tybee Lighthouse. George added the second floor, which now serves as The Bluebird Suite, for her sister, Caroline. George and Caroline enjoyed living in their marsh cottage until the late 1990’s. The current owner, your hostess, Shirley, hopes to provide a wonderful experience for travelers who appreciate helpfulness but also value their privacy.
Your cozy suite (with private entrance) is spacious and includes a living area with satellite TV, wi-fi access, a variety of books; and a refrigerator, coffee maker, & microwave. Bedroom includes a king sized bed, private shower, closet & and a sitting area.
A variety of birdhouses, garden art, and wind chimes add whimsical touches as you experience breathtaking sunsets overlooking the marsh, Horse Pen Creek, & the Back River. The location is central to the Back River fishing pier, the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, the beach, a variety of restaurants, art museums and shops. Bring your bike or rent one for an enjoyable way to sight see around our small island.
The view is sensational and can be enjoyed from each room. At high tide the marsh is covered with water and in addition to enjoying watching boaters, or kayaks passing by, it’s relaxing to watch the fish jumping or the occasional serendipitous glimpse of dolphins frolicking in the waters.

Little piece of paradise
What a relaxing, enjoyable stay we had at the Bluebird. Cozy, peaceful, conveniently located in a residential area, short walk to beach and several restuarants close by too. Bike rentals available on the island, which was a perfect way to travel and experience the local flavor. Great marsh view, high tide covers the marsh twice a day, from the little creek and river beyond. The sunsets were stunning! Our host was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about the island and neighboring Savannah. The Bluebird will be our new "go to getaway"
Thanks for your kind words. Look foward to seeing y'all soon!
Love this place!
We have been coming to The Bluebird for several years now. We love everything about it! Shirley is a sweetheart! Her place is adorable! Views are awesome! Can't wait till next year!!
Thanks for the lovely review Cheryl, it's because of guests like y'all that inspire me to renew my business license each year! Look forward to seeing you in 2018; until then, wishing you much joy!
Whimsical and refreshing!
I attended a conference in Savannah but decided to stay at the beach on Tybee Island, just east of the city. Since my availability was during the week, there were some great options on the island, and was fortunate to find this little bluebird suite with a relaxing marsh view and inspiring sunsets, also a surprisingly short walk to the beach. It was a refreshing experience, the suite and location had a touch of whimsey that made me smile each evening when I returned after a day of "conferencing." I can't wait to return with my husband to this little treasure by the shore and enjoy more of the island's offerings. I will recommended to my friends and associates who need to rewind, refresh and relax!
So happy that you enjoyed your time at the Bluebird, I'm happy to know that you took time out of your business comittment to enjoy Tybee. Thanks for the thoughtful review. All the best, Shirley
Charming, cozy and relaxing!!!
We travel often, however, seldom write reviews; but our first visit to Tybee Island and our stay at the Bluebird was such a pleasure, I felt compelled to share our experience. The location is in a residential neighborhood, with easy walk, or bike ride to the beach, restaurants, & shops. The beautiful marsh view with serene sunsets, which we enjoyed with a glass of wine each evening on our private porch offered an opportunity to connect with each other and nature.
The marsh alone was a source of enjoyment, just watching shore birds diving for their dinner & fish jumping at high tide. It's a short distance to the "back river", where we met a local guide, put our kayaks in the water and enjoyed a ride and beach picnic to Little Tybee Island, which is a short distance away, by boat, and uninhabitated. The Bluebird suite was the perfect size for us, spacious and charming, very comfortable bed and linens. We didn't plan to cook, so didn't miss having a stove, but enjoyed the conveniences available for making breakfast; frig, microwave, coffeemaker & toaster was perfect. I especially loved the surprising sweet touches throughout the suite, like a vintage bonga drum, small colorful xylophone, and guitar, which my husband attempted to play! There was a nice variety of books, which was a grand opportunity to get off Kindle for a while and read about local history and chill with a fun beach novel. Our host, Shirley, who lives downstairs, was available and attentive when needed, and very responsive to our texts and calls about questions regarding local activities. We appreciated her reminder that the island is a PAY TO PARK community, if going to the beach or other public areas by car, prepare to have quarters or credit card to pay for parking. The same for Savannah, just 20 minutes away, obviously parking is a premium in these communities; another reason we enjoyed renting bikes, just park, lock and no worries! The only problem with our stay at the Bluebird, was it was simply TOO SHORT; however, now that we have found it, we plan to return when the opportunity allows us to get away from our busy lives and renew our spirits by the shore, and marsh! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
So happy that you chose the Bluebird for your first Tybee visit! Look forward to seeing you soon!
Thank you for taking the time to write this positive review.
Great hostess and beautiful view
Shirley was a great hostess and made up for her maid's failure to clean prior to our arrival. She cleaned it herself and bought us dinner. The apartment was comfortable with a beautiful view over the marsh. For 2 adults, the walk to the beach was just fine but too long with children. The apartment has basic kitchen appliances and a few supplies, but not really suited for cooking. The apartment could really handle a deep-cleaning, fresh paint, and some towel hooks in the bathroom. Shirley provided plenty of towels, but there was nowhere to hang them! It would be nice to not see rust on the ceiling from a previous leak--those types of things did not detract from our stay but a little TLC could greatly improve the Bluebird.
Thanks for your observations, It's always helpful when guests share information on how we can improve quality to ensure a more pleasant experience. While there is no "maid" at the Bluebird, there is a cleaning service, who performs deep cleanings quarterly, will look into more frequency on this issue. The suite, which is licenced only for two guests is not set up as a condo or apartment, where cooking meals would be appropriate; but as you noted, is supplied with simple conveniences for guests to enjoy light snacks between delicious offerings among the island's restaurants. While the furry of Hurricane Matthew damaged the roof, which was immediately repaired, getting contractors in for painting ceiling has been a bit more challenging, due to juggling schedules between guest bookings. Thanks for choosing the Bluebird and for taking the time to note needed improvements. Wishing you all the best, Shirley
Adorable and homey feel!
We only stayed for two nights, but this place made our stay want to come back for longer! Adorable little cottage with a wonderful view and an amazing hostess made our stay very enjoyable. Shirley was very helpful and kind and made payment painless as well as check in. The Bluebird is walking distance from the beach and pretty much every restaurant we wanted to go to. We were excited at the end of each day to just come home, relax, and watch a movie in the living room before bed. Will definitely stay here again when we come back to Tybee!
Sydney, look forward to having you at the Bluebird again in the future! Best, Shirley
Overlooks beautiful marsh and Horsepen Creek and back river. Short walk to restaurants, Tybee's south beach where the Pier and Pavilion area are located...special events are frequently held there including fireworks displays, bands and festivals.
