Such a quaint cottage with so many extras including a detached guesthouse! New to the rental market and fully updated, Pelican Point is a unique retreat with amazing wetland and sound views and over an acre of outdoor space partially shaded by majestic live oaks, cedars and a large fig tree. Direct sound access, a large grassy area for rigging and a boardwalk to a spacious private soundfront dock and more than 500 feet of soundfront shoreline make for a watersports paradise, whether windsurfing, kiteboarding, fishing, crabbing or kayaking. And if your thoughts turn to the ocean it's an easy walk to Salvo's wide and un-crowded sandy beaches for a day of surfing, boogie boarding, fishing, shelling or just relaxing in the sun.
After a fantastic day on the water come home for a dip in the private soundfront pool or 6-person hot tub to watch the sunset over the sound; or relax with a game of horseshoes or bocce on the lawn. A huge fig and live oak canopy provides ample shade to while the day away with a good book or a shady spot for the tots to play. A small wetlands beach, sheltered and shallow waters and small playhouse under the oaks are great for little kids, and everyone can enjoy the gameroom with pool table, basketball hoop and hammock in the cedars.
The main cottage allows easy access for all including seniors and handicapped, with one-level living, a ramp to the back door, and a bathroom with large accessible shower. It features a large and well-equipped kitchen with new stainless steel appliances and views over the pool to the sound, a dining area that seats 12, and new high-efficiency washer & dryer. The sunny living room has spectacular sound views, a 42' flat-screen TV with cable, Blu-ray DVD, a huge selection of movies on demand via Netflix, and a massive music library via Pandora Internet Radio.
The cottage has 4 bedrooms including two masters. Bedroom 1 is a master with a king bed, flat-screen 26' TV / DVD with cable, large bathroom with a handicapped accessible shower, and stunning views over the pool to the wetlands and sound. Bedroom 2 is a master with a queen bed and bathroom with bath and shower, and large windows with views of the sun rising through the cedars. Bedroom 3 has a queen bed and sliding glass doors to a brick patio on the soundside, and bedroom 4 has two sets of bunks (4 twin beds). The cozy detached guesthouse is about 30 feet from the cottage (on the other side of the pool) via a walkway and ramp, and has a part-covered deck with porch swing, adirondack chairs and amazing wetland and soundfront views - a great place to watch the many birds that visit, the kiteboarders speeding by or the breathtaking sunsets. Inside there is a gameroom with pool table and 32' flat-screen TV with cable / Blu-ray DVD / Netflix / Pandora, and a wetbar with full-size refrigerator / ice-maker, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. The guesthouse also features one cozy bedroom with a queen bed, and a bathroom with shower.
Pelican Point is a traditional Hatteras cottage that has been fully updated, but without losing the simple island charm reminiscent of the more remote Ocracoke Island, where live oaks stand watch over one-story cottages and small family cemeteries that tell the story of the island. In fact the cottage is built by the site of the traditional homestead and resting place of some of the original settlers in the area. Their homestead lasted hundreds of years on the high ground by the live oaks, with the land where Pelican Point now stands serving as the family farm and route to the wetlands and sound for hunting and fishing. Although the original homestead has made way for development, some of the descendants still live near Pelican Point and are great neighbors with wonderful stories to tell!

We're a family of four with two active young boys and love watersports, taking long walks on the beach and relaxing with friends and family. We particularly enjoy windsurfing, surfing, sailing and kayaking - and want to add kiteboarding and fishing to the list! Based in central NC, we race to the Outer Banks at every opportunity. Our kids love to kayak, crab, climb Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, visit the turtles and take the free ferry across to Ocracoke. We all love the friendly, laid-back atmosphere on the Outer Banks, and the amazing sights and seafood!

Why Owner chose Dare County
Since moving to NC in 2007 we found ourselves visiting the Outer Banks more and more often. The beautiful soundfront views and unspoiled beaches of Salvo soon became our favorite destination - even in the height of summer the beaches are uncrowded and there is always a quiet spot to windsurf or kayak on the sound. The major attractions are all close by too: Hatteras and Bodie Lighthouses, The Graveyard of the Atlantic, Lost Colony and Wright Brothers Museums. Our breath was literally taken away when we first saw Pelican Point - it is a little piece of paradise by the sound. You have to experience the stunning 180 degree wetland & sound views and 200 year old live oaks to fully appreciate the wild beauty and see why we love this spot.
What makes this Cottage unique
Pelican Point has hundreds of feet of soundfront access, over an acre of outdoor space and is only a short walk to the ocean beaches. There are rental shops nearby for kayaks, surfboards, bikes and beach equipment, and for kiteboarders Real Watersports and The Slick are just to the north. Grocery and fishing supply shops are a five minute drive and a cinema and larger shopping district can be found in Avon, a 15-20 minute drive away.

Such an amazing place to stay. The house is so inviting it makes you feel right at home.
Will definitely go back to PELICAN POINT 😊
Another fantastic week at Pelican Point! ! !
Even though Hurricane Irma was churning up the seas, she couldn't out a damper on our week at Pelican Point. Unfortunately, the other half of our relatives couldn't make the trip from Florida, so we had the whole place to ourselves. We fished, went crabbing, took long walks on the beach, did the museum near the Hattetas ferry, climbed the Hatteras Lighthouse, visited quite a few stores, kayaking on the sound, not to mention hours spent in the beautiful pool and relaxing in the hot tub. Enjoyed the spectacular sunsets nightly from the guesthouse deck. This was our fifth year at Pelican Point and we loved it as much as the first time. Hopefully we are booked already for 2018.
One of the wonderful features about Pelican Point is that us older folks with some issues (knees, legs, back) find the walkways to be smooth sailing. No mountains of stairs to be climbing, thus all can share in any and all activities. Very handicapped friendly if needed. Very easy for unloading and repacking the car when it's time to leave. Boo-hoo !!
Another plus is the neighborhood. Quiet! ! You get the feeling that you are the only people around. But you aren't. Early morning fishing, one hears roosters in the distance and boats on their way to fishing grounds while the sun peeks over the horizon. The neighbors are local, born here, and are a delight to chat with. Talk about a wealth of information about the area. And so friendly.
Looking forward to next year when we will have our family reunion once again barring another hurricane. Did miss our spirited matches of bocce ball. Threw a few horseshoes, but it just wasn't the same . . .
Our home away from home!
In the last seven years, this was our eighth week to stay at Pelican Point! There are many other nice places to stay on Hatteras Island, and even some places that are more luxurious, but Pelican Point is the place where we feel most at home. Our only regret is that we can't come to stay there more often. We just love it!
Lots of space and beautiful view!
I just left this morning. I loved the location and the two houses made it very nice for the family. The pier is amazing! Rented kayaks and went out everyday, so beautiful. Great pool area, and the little ones loved it. Pool house was well equipped with safety items. The hot tub is falling apart and had a bit of a hazard with a jet cover coming off exposing a rusted screw. Tub is definitely in need of replacement. If your a big beach person, bring your 4 wheel drive and get a pass $50 in advance. We used the mechanic behind the blue whale and he gave us free advise. Everyone we meet was very welcoming. The vendor who maintains the property was not reachable. We ran out of gas for the grill, which was a mess and caught on fire. Some trash from a long rental season was around the home and fence line. The refrigerators were well bleached but the floors were not well cleaned. Lost something under a couch and was a little grossed out. Also items were found under the bunk beds and the couch cushions when we were looking for a lost pair of sunglasses. Loved the numerous well done bathrooms. Lastly I would rent again it is a beautiful property and I rented at the end of the season. Would have been unhappy if I paid prime season rates.
Pelican Point Without Power
This is our second stay at Pelican Point. The home is fine, and the dock provided an excellent place for our grand kids to fish and crab. However we needed to evacuate the home due to the sustained power outage caused by the mishap at the new Oregon Inlet bridge. We spent two days in the dark which was especially bad at night without AC, we needed to open screenless windows. Needless to say the insects were delighted. We would love to return next year, but our grand children are getting older and an additional bed room may be needed.
We are so sorry but unfortunately the power outage was completely out of our control and was an island issue - there was a mandatory evacuation order for the area due to the loss of power. For your own health and safety you should always leave if, in the rare event, one is issued.
The outage was due to a contractor cutting the main cable to the island and is an isolated event which has never happened before.
There is a link to the construction company's webpage for a claim form for those affected. Please let us know if you did not receive this.
This was our second stay at Pelican Point. We love this cottage and have thoroughly enjoyed both vacations here. The sunsets are amazing, the dock and crabbing are so much fun as well as the views. We watched some incredible lightening storms on our last night. We don't want to leave once we arrive. However, this year we 4-wheeled on the beaches which we highly recommend. We found great shelling at the off road point beach near the cape hatteras lighthouse. We even found small tree frogs hiding on the buoys on the guest house porch that our 4 year old son loved. Thank you so much for sharing your vacation house. We want to come back in the next couple years.
