If you want to get away from it all, yet have access to everything, Casa Largo is the place. Nestled among monkeys and parrots on the mountaintop above the quaint fishing village of Garza, Costa Rica, the villa is the perfect retreat for couples, or small family seeking seclusion and relaxation. While home, sit under the comfortable shade of our wrap-around porch and enjoy the breathtaking view of Playa Guiones. Do yoga, read, nap, watch birds, swim in a gorgeous infinity pool, or soak in the luxury, jungle jacuzzi. In the evenings, grill and dine al fresco, watch the sunset, and linger in one of the rocking chairs or couch under the stars. When you want to get out, just drive to one of the many restaurants just two to six miles away in Garza, Esperanza and Nosara. If you like the beach, Playa Garza is just five minutes down the hill and the popular surfing beach, Playa Guiones, is just 20 minutes away. Samara Beach and Playa Carillo are only thirty- minutes south.
There are many activities that can be booked in Nosara including deep-sea fishing, surf lessons, monkey tours, river tours, horseback riding, canopy tours, and turtle tours on Ostional Beach. But if you are like us, you will find that you have everything you need right here on the hill. If you need to work and stay connected to the world, we also have Claro satellite TV and Internet access (4 Mbps).
The house is large, with cathedral ceilings and screened-in windows for ventilation. Together with the wrap-around porch, the house stays very cool. Although there is an air conditioning unit in the private casita, we rarely use it. This is the perfect house for a couple or couples, or a small family with adult kids. We do not recommend the home for small children due to the openness with the pool and nature. There is also a gourmet kitchen with all amenities. If rugged luxury is your cup of tea, then this is the place for you.
For people interested in mind/body wellness, the area is one the Blue Zone's in the world, featured by National Geographic. A Blue Zone is a region of the world where people commonly live past 100 due to the area's healthy environment and living styles. The Nosara area is also home to the Blue Spirit Retreat Center, affiliated with New York's Omega Center, and the Nosara Yoga Institute. The home is an easy (ten-minute) driving distance of both of these places and offers a peaceful setting to return home to after classes.
Organic vegetables and meats are available on weekends at the farmer's market.

Why Stephen chose Canton of Nicoya
The home is located in Garza, which is about 6 miles south of Guiones beach, so if you want to be within walking (200 meters) of the ocean, this home is not for you. However, please note, homes near the water tend not to have cool breezes or vistas of the ocean. They also have more mosquitoes and during dry season/high season, you will be inundated with dust from the dirt roads. I owned property in Nosara, but the dust was too much, and so we moved to the Vista Royal community in the hills above Playa Garza ... overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Vista Royal is an exclusive development with 10 homes in a gated community with multiple levels of soft-security. The community overlooks Playa Guiones and/or Playa home is near Blue Spirit (~3 miles), Nosara Yoga Institute (~5 miles), and the center of Guiones (about 6 miles). The home overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is ~1.5 miles from Garza beach and 5 miles from Nosara beaches.
What makes this House unique
The home is semi-eco friendly with gravity fed water but water pressure is not an issue, and solar hot a problem for showers, etc., but excessive clouds will result in lower water temperatures. In addition, we get wonderful ocean/jungle breezes and only have air conditioning in the room that is detached from the main house (casita) for those who cannot do without, although we rarely use it. We are amazed at how few mosquitoes and other annoying bugs are up here and it is not problem keeping the doors open in the evening. We have a newly constructed jacuzzi (again, solar heated), and can sleep 6 in three bedrooms (master has a CA-King, the other room has two full-sized beds that can be combined to form a King, and the other bedroom is 20 feet detached from the main house and has a Queen bed). In addition to a wrap-around veranda with many seating options, there are two terraces: a solarium and a shade deck--both overlooking the canopies and ocean.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weeklong stay at this wonderful villa. Waking up to a beautiful sunrise, savoring the spectacular views, and seeing and hearing the jungle come alive in the morning was at the top of the list. Sunsets from the infinity pool were just as amazing. While the photos are an accurate depiction of the villa, once you see and experience those views, you won’t want to leave. Anna, very pleasant housekeeper, kept the villa immaculate during our stay. The villa had everything we could possibly want; well-appointed kitchen, plenty of bath and beach towels, beach chairs, comfortable beds. Outside on the porch, there were inviting lounge chairs and a hammock to relax in with a good book. There is no AC in the main house (there is AC in the casita), however, the fans provided all of the sleeping breeze that we needed. Pololo, the gardener, keeps the grounds looking beautiful, and patiently answered many of our questions about the native flora of the area. We enjoyed our privacy and felt very safe in the home.
Stephen, the owner, is very responsive and helpful. With his suggestions, we were able to do a little planning before we arrived. His restaurant reviews were great, and the recommendation for a fishing experience with Juri of Nosara Sea Saw Tours was spot on. The canopy tour with Miss Sky was exhilarating! He truly thinks of everything so that you don’t have to.
As others have mentioned, you will need a vehicle to explore the area, and get you to the beaches. The roads are not paved (yet). Playa Garza, Guiones and Pelada each have their own charm whether you are interested in surf or sun (check out the blowhole). We found fresh veggies, fruits and meats at the markets in Garza and Nosara. Stephen also connected us with Luis and wife, Patricia, who cooked us a tasty fish and lobster dinner. We never turned the TV on the entire time, and the Wi-Fi suited our needs just fine. What a sublime place to make a lasting memory!
Let me begin by saying that this is a gorgeous home and it's even more beautiful than the photos suggest. It was super-clean, well-appointed, and extremely comfortable. Six of us (3 couples) shared the home for a two-week vacation, our first time in the country. One definitely needs a car, as it is too far to walk to the beach, but there are so many beautiful places to explore, that one would want to have a car anyway (4-wheel drive recommended!) We walked on the Garza beach every morning as the fishing boats shoved off and enjoyed drinks and dinner at the Garza Lounge on several occasions. There is a large grocery store 30 minutes away but smaller markets are close by if you want to pick up essentials for cooking at home, which we did a lot of. Right in the heart of the little village of Garza is Pescataria Alexis, one of the best fish markets you could ever hope to find. Even folks in other towns referred us to this place to buy fresh fish. Don't let the simple appearance of the building dissuade you!
Stephen, the owner of the villa, was extremely helpful to us both before and during our stay in his home. He responded quickly to my questions and to issues that arose while we were there. One of the greatest assets of this place is the housekeeper Anna, who speaks English beautifully and was a delightful and helpful presence when she was at the house. It was she who facilitated the repair of the freezer which malfunctioned during our stay, and I was grateful for her help since my command of Spanish is nada. We did utilize the services of a local woman recommended by Stephen who cooked dinner for us on a couple of evenings, but mostly we preferred doing the cooking ourselves. There is also an amazing massage therapist who lives just down the hill from the villa who is a friend of Stephen's, so if that has any appeal, be sure to ask him for her contact info. The TV channels in English are limited and the Wi-fi modem had to be rebooted quite often, but they both worked just fine when needed.
We found using a GPS for the trip to and from San Jose to be a blessing, and if your knowledge of Spanish is limited or rusty, download the app Google Translate before you arrive.
All in all, our days were filled with exploration, often of an adventurous nature, and it was lovely to return to such a beautiful, peaceful, and quiet home. We loved it!
Spectacular home with stunning views - Simple home design but very functional and comfortable. All "reviews" are accurate in the description of the home (wow, what a view!) and attentiveness by the owner, Stephen (very responsive to emails...super fast). The home has more kitchen "stuff" than we have back in the States (we found an authentic Wok to use and an ice cream maker...we kept that quiet from the kids)
My 2 teenage children fully enjoyed the pool and solar-heated jacuzzi and they loved watching the monkeys play in the trees. My wife and I especially enjoyed the quietness of having morning coffee on the covered terrace (in rocking chairs nonetheless) and a glass (or two) of wine on the sun terrace to view the heavens at night. The main home does not have a/c, but it wasn't needed. The ceiling fans with smaller bed-side fans (if needed) were plenty to keep us cool and very comfortable at night. Very happy we chose his home over all the others, especially the homes near the beach. Stephen was spot-on about the dust and heat in Nosara town. If you want Sunset / Ocean Views + no dust + cool breezes + beautiful home, then book this home, you will not be disappointed.
What a perfect spot to spend a week in Costa Rica. My two college aged sons and I loved this house. It had everything you could possibly want and more. Every day we looked forward to getting back to the house at sunset so we could take a dip in our gorgeous pool and relax in the rocking chairs and hammocks to see the beautiful views of the sun setting and the stars appearing over head. The house was spacious and private and had lots of wildlife to hear and watch. The cool breeze at night made sleeping with the doors open a great way to sleep. Stephen and his staff were great throughout the entire process and our private chef Luis was amazing ( definitely recommend using him at least once during your stay). Stephen did a great job with providing directions and tips on things to do during our stay. We can't wait to get back to this wonderful place on the hill!!
Spacious and Relaxing - highly recommend
My family of five stayed at this house for 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year's. We were so relieved when we arrived and the house was even nicer than the photographs! We have stayed at some very beautiful resorts and this was just as nice, probably nicer. It was spacious and so relaxing. My husband and I thought we would stay in the casita, but we opted for the king size bed and let our two teenagers split the time in the casita (perfect for late sleepers). Luis and Patricia, who cooked for us, were amazing. The food was fresh and delicious (and plentiful) and it was so luxurious to come home at the end of a long day in the sun and salt and have dinner right at the house. Lovely people. We zip lined, rode horses, paddle boarded, surfed and just chilled out. Internet was spotty but it made for better family time, so we were fine with it. It always worked, it just didn't always work for 5 of us at the same time. I highly recommend this property, as long as you don't mind driving to the beach rather than walking. It was one of our best vacations!
Perfect Vacation - Perfect House
I stayed at this home in for a week with my 2 sons ages 13 and 16 and we had the best week imaginable. The house is luxurious, spacious, immaculate, and the living spaces inside and out were perfection....whether rocking on the porch, swinging in the hammock, swimming in the pool, napping in the porch shade, gazing at the night sky and stars, nothing about it could be better. The area was amazing - Playa Garza exceeded all expectations and we walked it every morning and evening. Surfing on Guiones beach in Nosara and various day trips were a plus. We have so many happy memories and Stephen and Karen were wonderful and helpful. If you are considering this house - go for it!
Other Activities: turtles, quads, yoga, ziplining, monkeys, ultralight flying
