About Steve Strand

My parents built this house in the 1980's and we've spent many weekends and holidays together here through the years. Now that our children are teenagers, our lives are busy and we don't get together as often. But we all have fond memories of our times at SML!

Our entire family loves the lake house! From swimmers to sunbathers and fishermen to porch-rockers, our family includes them all. And everyone's unique pasttime is readily available at Pop's Pleasure.

My mother loves to sit on the porch, listening to the birds and enjoying the beautiful trees. I spend most of my time floating in the water or sunbathing with a book. My nephews are great fishermen, and our girls love to ski and knee-board.

At night, we play games, work jigsaw puzzles, watch movies/TV, or visit Bridgewater Plaza for ice cream and live music. There is something for everyone at Smith Mountain Lake!

Steve Strand purchased this cottage in 1983

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a fabulous time! The weather was perfect. There was one nasty storm which we watched from the screened porch. The children loved the lake - the adults did, too! The boys were so worn out from simming and fishing by Wednesday, they took a four hour afternoon nap. I was also able to visit with several cousins while here. Thanks you for sharing your home!

Serenity at The Lake

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a beautiful Fall weekend at Pops Place at Smith Mountain Lake. The excellent communication leading up to our visit made check in and out very convenient. The house was very cozy, clean, and well kept. We found the kitchen to be very functional and well equipped for the cooking we chose to do.

While the weather was not the best, but the large screened in porch allowed us to really enjoy the outside surroundings despite the rain, in fact we were able to leave the french doors to the house open and hear the rainfall. The lot had lots of trees that allowed us to enjoy the early fall colors from the comfort of the house and screened in porch.

All in all, a great house for a weekend or week long get away, we will be back again!

Great Lake House

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house for our family of four (with kids age 5 and 7) to enjoy a few days of rest. We loved this house and wish it were closer so that we could come back more often! This is obviously a family house, so it felt like we were staying in someone's home - very comfortable and neat, but not a pristine and over-decorated showhome. The kitchen is very well-equipped, and we had a great time, even on a rainy day. The screened porch was heaven for me! My only word of advice is to bring your own water as there is a sulfer-type smell that my kids wouldn't use to brush their teeth or drink. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again! Thank you, Strand family, for sharing your home!

Perfect Lake Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Pop's Pleasure. The cottage is very clean, nicely furnished, and tastefully decorated. We especially loved the screened porch that runs the length of the back of the house and has wonderful views of the lake. The porch is even larger than it appears online and with the ceiling fan and breeze off the lake is quite comfortable even on hot days. The kitchen is well equipped with just about anything you might need. The TV upstairs has cable, and there is a second TV downstairs, along with a good selection of DVDs.There are also games and a foosball table downstairs.

We had four kids with us ranging from 9 to teen and they all had a great time. The swimming and fishing off the dock was a lot of fun for all ages. When entering the water using the dock step ladder closest to shore, the depth of the water ranged from upper thigh to waist deep while we were there. There is a good sized area near the step ladder where our 9-year-old could stand up, but the depth of the water increases quickly as you head towards the end of the dock. A big plus is that there is sand where you step into the water (not mud) which makes for a very pleasant swimming experience. We also rented a boat for part of the time and it was so convenient to be able to dock it at the house. We highly recommend this cottage and would definitely rent it again.

Pop's was great!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had the best vacation ever last week and we wish we had tried Smith Mountain Lake years ago. The Eastern shore is ok, but with the traffic, crowds, sand and unpredictable weather and water, lake life is so much more laid back. Even when it rained, sitting in the screen porch within the trees overlooking the lake and nature was just as fun as playing on the dock and water. Renting a boat for a couple of days was also a great way to see the area, fish and find more swimming holes, although with 500 miles of shoreline, it is going to take a few years to explore it all.

The cabin was simple and felt great. The WiFi keep the kids happy and the kitchen and bedrooms worked out just fine.

Relaxing and Very Comfortable!

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pop's Pleasure. The accommodations are clean and comfortable. The bed in the master bedroom is extremely comfy and the screened porch is heaven on Earth with a beautiful shaded lake view and ample seating for several adults and children. The dock is spacious; plenty of room for adults and children alike. The water off of the dock is perfect for swimming and the hammock was the site of daily reading and naps. While the walk from the house down to the dock is a slope, it is relatively gentle and tiered so it was not a problem for my 3 year old grandson or my 76 year old mother.Since we had a young child with us, the door at the top of the stairs and the lock on the screen porch door were a real plus. We would definitely return.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you found the cottage easily accommodating for both youngsters and the "young at heart" older folks. We've tried to include amenities that will help you safely enjoy your stay in our home. And don't forget the nearby educational opportunities such as the Booker T Washington home place or touring the SML damn. A fun day trip could include Peaks of Otter, exploring Roanoke or a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. SML has so much to offer and we hope you'll return again soon.

Pop's Pleasure

My family with 2 teenagers loves to vacation at Smith Mountain Lake. The boating, tubing and jet-skiing were so much fun! The cottage was well maintained and extremely clean. We thoroughly enjoyed the screened porch with wonderful views of the water! The porch had a ceiling fan and was a cool place to sit even in the hottest part of the day. The lot was gently sloped to the dock. We had such a great time and beautiful weather!
