Why Aaron chose Detroit

We fell in love with Detroit Lake in college. It was always the first camping trip of the year. 20 years later, married with children, we decided it's much more comfortable to enjoy the Lake's ammenities in a cabin! Our first 'cabin' was more of a house, so we were really excited when this cabin came on the market. We've always wanted a cabinesque cabin with all the comforts of home and this house is perfect. We love it!

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is at the end of a dead end street with only one real neighbor. This means that there's little to no traffic. You're free to enjoy the closeness to town AND a bit of privacy. Our favorite part of the cabin is having a bunch of friends up (we own the adjacent cabin as well & there are multiple tent locations), cooking a big dinner, and enjoying it at the outdoor picnic table & around the large firepit. Then hours of letting the kids play outside while we converse at the fire. There's also plenty of board games, 100's of movies and a mini foosball/pool/ping pong table to keep the kids occupied. It's camping with the luxury of a fully stocked house. Really, we throw in perishables, a change of clothes and go.

Great cabin!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our time in this great little cabin! It was clean, and fully stocked with whatever kitchen item was needed. We definitely would rent it again. We loved the outside area, it had a great view of the lake.

We made it work

  • 3 of 5

Tucked into a corner on the steep slope overlooking Detroit Lake marina so a great central location for the area. Not a great view, but a view of the lake nonetheless. As advertised, well stocked kitchen and linens supplied. Renting was easy, owner responds promptly.

But cottage badly in need of updated mattresses and furniture in my opinion and a purge of junk and kvetch especially in shed where washer dryer is located.

We had a couple of hot days and the Air conditioning setup is just inadequate plus lots of noise traveling uphill from the road below. I don't want readers to think it was bad. We made it work. I think priced accordingly. Personally, would not return in present condition.

Not a bad location.

Could of been a lot cleaner.

A lot of clutter inside and out.

We have stayed here a few times - it's a great location if you're planning on spending your time at the lake. It's a quiet place located at a dead end road, cool fire pit outside that we used almost everyday and sleeps our family of 5 comfortably. You can't get WiFi at the house but we survived :)

I have medium to low standards (cheapness being key) but when we got to the cabin, we immediately noticed the sheets had not been cleaned and balled up on the beds from the last users. One of my friends found an old cracker in the bed where he slept. When I told the landlord person, he said he would fully refund me which was fine, but we still had to stay on the dirty beds. He also didn't refund me through VRBO (which I should have thought was weird at the time). After a few email reminders, he finally sent me a check that was short of the rental amount by about $30. The most annoying thing was having that money out of my account for weeks. It may not seem like a big deal for the owner, but I never asked my friends to split the cost because I knew I was getting reimbursed. Because of that, I took the brunt of the financial burden.

You description included a lake view-There was only a dry mud pit

  • 2 of 5

The property description included lake views. What it fails to mention is that the lake is drained approximately 6 months of the year. The cabin had the necessary features and a decent sized hot water heater. The services available in Detroit are minimal, with no decent restaurant even close. You have to go outside to access the laundry area.
