Steps to tennis and nature trails; access to famous Chilmark beaches
Chilmark is for lovers of the beach and the great outdoors, and this light-filled and very private deck house nestled in the woods is a perfect Chilmark retreat for family and friends. Comfortable, unfussy furnishings, lots of windows and a spacious mahogany deck make this the perfect place to enjoy peaceful country mornings and cool off after the beach while enjoying a gorgeous sunset view with a peek of the ocean. Beautiful 300-acre Waskosim's Rock Reservation is steps away, and access to gorgeous Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket Beaches, just a short drive away, is available to our tenants. Walk to private association tennis courts.
Set high up on a private, partially wooded lot off rustic Tea Lane, there's plenty of room for kids to play inside and out. Enjoy beautiful summer evenings on the wrap-around deck. Floor-to-ceiling windows on the open-floor-plan main level with all-wood cathedral ceiling make being indoors almost like being outside. Snuggle up by the wood-burning fireplace on cool fall nights. A well-equipped kitchen opens to breakfast bar and dining area, with room at the table for 8.
The bedrooms are comfortable, uncluttered and fresh, with all-cotton sheets and new comforters. One bedroom on the main level has a king bed and private bath, 3 more bedrooms (one with a King bed and two with doubles) and another bath with washer and dryer are on the lower level. Downstairs playroom with slider to the yard has two futon couches that open to full beds for extra guests.
A detached outside shower is a delightful way to wash off after the beach.
Cleaning, linens and trash pickup are all included in the rental fee.

About Suzanne G. Hirsch
We love coming to the Vineyard to be near the wind and the waves, amenities that are sorely missing where we live! Time spent on the island is always restorative. We live in Ohio but have family on the Island year-round. The house was built by my parents in the 1970s, and it is in part due to their efforts that the nearby Waskosim's Rock Reservation property was saved from becoming a subdivision. My recent novel for teens, WASHASHORE, is set on the Vineyard and was recently named the winner of the Green Earth Book Award for 2014.
Suzanne G. Hirsch purchased this House in 2007
Why Suzanne G. Hirsch chose Chilmark
I've been coming to the Vineyard since the 1970s, and while this beautiful island has been discovered by many more people since then, it retains its rustic, charming character. My husband has fallen in love with the island as well, and our children look forward to spending time here each summer and winter, including long days playing in the waves on Lucy Vincent Beach, eating lobsters right on the pier in Menemsha, pizza on the famous porch of the Chilmark Store, and even mini-golf in Vineyard Haven. For my part, I'd be happy just to spend my days on our Chilmark deck, listening to the birds.
What makes this House unique
Coffee with the birds on the deck. Sunset drinks on the deck. Starry nights. Lots of comfy space for family to lounge, play games, and enjoy meals together. Walk to some of the most gorgeous hiking trails on the island. Wild blueberries in August. Key to private tennis courts, a short walk away.

Peaceful Retreat in the Woods
We stayed at this house in mid-August and had a wonderful time. The house itself is located down a dirt road on a very secluded and private lot - you can see no other houses once you are on the property. Each day from the wrap around deck we saw bunnies, birds, butterflies, and even a mother deer and her baby fawn! The house itself is not "fancy", but is cool/retro (it's a deck house from the '70s/'80s) and was immaculately clean when we arrived. 3 of the 4 four bedrooms are downstairs on a different level. Several of the downstairs bedrooms are a bit small but serve the purpose of providing a place to sleep. The week we were there was very hot but there was plenty of fans to help keep us cool at night. It's about a 10 minute drive from the Chilmark General Store and Lucy Vincent Beach. Also, the outdoor shower was a bonus and there are beautiful walking trails from the house. Overall I would recommend this house for nature lovers and people looking for a simple and relaxed space to get away from it all. We particularly appreciated the privacy. We would love to come back and think it would be beautiful and interesting in just about any time of year. Lastly, the property owner Suzanne was very accommodating and easy to work with. Thanks again for sharing your home!
Relax in Chilmark
We've stayed in this house for several years and feel right at home. It's got a very relaxed vibe, is in a great location, and is very private. The layout of the house is great if you've got teenagers, as the master bedroom is on the main level, and the other three bedrooms are downstairs. It's always been impeccably clean when we arrive and we especially love the outdoor wrap around deck. 10 minute drive to Menemsha, the Chilmark Store, and LV Beach. Great beach house!
Great Chilmark House
I have been vacationing in Chilmark my entire life. It is one of the more special weeks that I look forward to every year. This home captured the energy and vibe that Martha's Vineyard (and specifically Chilmark) is all about. A very simple, spacious home that is perfect for entertaining and relaxing after a day at the beach. There is a great outdoor shower and the wraparound deck is phenomenal for lounging. It is about a 10-15 minute drive to our favorite beach, Lucy Vincent. It is simple, spacious and a great beach house.
Great Location, Great Layout, Perfect Getaway
This house is in a beautiful part of Chilmark, off of Tea Lane...close enough to go into the towns and private enough to feel like you're totally secluded. It's within walking distance to Waskosim's Rock Reservation, with wonderful hiking trails. The house is a combination of rustic and modern with every amenity one would need. Extremely well organized and stocked, the house was immaculate when we arrived. The beds and bedding are top quality. The open layout of the house is perfect for the family to spend time together.
Lovely & Comfortable Up-Island Home
Stayed for a week+ in mid-July 2011. Home is clean, airy, very comfortable. Beds very nice, kitchen well-equipped, great (huge) wrap-around deck with grill, supercomfy couches and lots of room for a family to be together, or find their own space in the house. Chilmark location is wonderfully central to different parts of the island, and allows for passes to Lucy Vincent, one of the island's most gorgeous private beaches. Quite private - about a mile down a well-maintained dirt road and surrounded by quiet woods - yet it felt easy to get out and explore. Nearby: fantastic farmstands with fresh local goodies, an incredible restaurant (State Road Restaurant), hiking trails, flea markets and farmers markets, Chilmark Chocolates (yum!), and Menemsha for fresh fish and great sunsets. Owner Suzanne was delightful to work with, prompt, helpful, friendly and straightforward. Hope to stay there again soon!
Great Chilmark House
We have been staying at this house for years and have found the house clean, well maintained and comfortable. It is close to conservations trails and a short car ride to the beach. We would recommend it to friends and relatives.
Our Chilmark location gives you access to some of the most beautiful private beaches on the Island, Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket. A lovely wildlife preserve, Waskosim's Rock Reservation, is a short walk from the property. We are conveniently located midway between the villages of Chilmark, where the General Store offers fantastic pizza, a porch with rockers, and world-class celebrity-spotting, West Tisbury, where Alley's General Store has everything you need and a great farm stand out back, as well as a great art museum, and the quaint fishing village of Menemsha, with fish markets right on the pier. Don't miss Chilmark Chocolates, fresh greens from North Tabor Farm, and a special night out at State Road, our favorite restaurant, or a family lobster night at the Home Port, with its sunset water views. Or get takeout at the HomePort's back door and take it down to Menemsha Beach, where happy picnickers toast and applaud the sunset on beautiful evenings. Take a drive out to Aquinnah to see the world-famous Gay Head cliffs and check out pizza night (Wednesdays) at the Orange Peel Bakery.
