Why Doug and Gladys Renfrow chose Lake Chatuge

Our family began vacationing in Hiawassee, GA when the children were in middle school. We always rented a condo and would look at the gorgeous scenery and say if we ever had a chance we would love to own property on the lake. We had a chance to acquire our home a few years later and have been coming to the mountains since.

What makes this house unique

We enjoy swimming and boating on the lake, then taking a break to grill out for lunch. Everyone takes turns in a friendly ping pong competition or shopping in the quaint town of Hiawassee. Of course the Georgia Mountain Fair in July draws people to the fairgrounds for exciting musical performances, crafts and funnelcakes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We kinda feel like we'll have no need to look for rentals now...we are so in love with your home! That view is gorgeous! We will surely be back. ~Thanks and take care till next time :) Connie

Beautiful home and perfect location

  • 5 of 5

The house was very welcoming, clean and comfortable. There is plenty of space for a large family to spread out or to gather in the living area. It includes everything you need - although we ate out most of the time as it was just 2 of us and only stayed 2 nights. The big windows offer a great view of the lake and mountains, and let in a lot of natural light. Loved waking up in the morning with the sun beams reflecting off the water onto the loft ceiling.

The town of Hiawassee is only a few minutes away and it's a quick drive to other points of interest in the area like Brasstown Bald and Helen.

We'll be sure to check on this property again when we come back.

Thanks for a beautiful weekeend!

Pictures do not do it justice

Last minute, my family decided to go away for the weekend before the weather turned colder. After much VRBO searching, we came across this gem, and I'm so glad we did. Lake Chatuge is one of the most beautiful lakes that we've spent time on, and the house did not disappoint. Its situated practically on top of the water, with very easy access to town. We did some quick shopping at Ingles in town, and seems we were back at the house quickly. The road leading to the house, while narrow, was still easy driving and GPS led us right to our destination. The house is VERY clean. The views are perfect. Doug and Gladys were very accessible. We had to call them to ask about nearest boat ramps and other logistical issues. We brought our boat and put in just outside of town at the new boat ramp. The best way to find it is to waze 863 Shake Rag Road- it will lead you to a store across the street from the ramp. While this ramp is not by land the closest one, its a VERY easy boat ride to the house. The water off the dock is deep and clean and the kids had a fun time jumping into the ice cold water :). They are polar bears. There was a grill and a well stocked kitchen, as well as several decks for gathering. All had amazing views. The beds were comfortable and linens were high end. My favorite part was the converted garage where we let the garage door open while the kids played ping pong and we watched GA beat Notre Dame.

I should also mention that we had a great breakfast buffet in town at a little restaurant called GA Mountain Restaurant. They had pancakes, fried bologna, bacon, sausage, biscuits and Gravy, etc. It was all really good.

The house is attractive, clean , and large. The setting is gorgeous. And the price is straightforward and less than most places in the area. We couldn't believe how pretty it was for what we were paying. I'm glad though, because I had a budget and was able to stay within it thanks to the owners fair pricing. There were not any crazy fees like I see a lot now on VRBO.

We laughed so much on our weekend. It was a breath of fresh air. I can't thank the owners enough for their hospitality.

A+ all the way around. We stayed for 5 nights and the house and area are simply one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, and I've been all over the world.

The pictures do not do the house and lake justice. The house is awesome. Huge open windows and floor plan with decks on each floor and its own personal dock. The kids loved swimming right of the dock and we brought our own stand up paddleboards and you have to try really hard to find a better place to have a lake and mountain vacation in the world.

The owners are responsive and for the price this is one of the best deals in the area. The house has everything you need. Instantly felt like a home upon arrival. The house is well equipped, beds comfortable, and it even has a ping pong table in the garage.

Check out Consolidated Gem Mining in nearby Dahlonega and one of the many whitewater rafting spots also within an hour or so.

Ingles is right in town for groceries and lots of little local restaurants to check out.

We'll definitely be back again. Ignore the one somewhat negative review. The stairs to the dock are not steep at all, and have railings all the way down. The floor plan of the house is not strange at all. No idea what these people were talking about.

Nice house, beautiful lake. Very steep stairs.

  • 3 of 5

Easy to find, right off road, no bath on one floor, strange floor plan , but nice views of lake. big kitchen, needs a little updating , but has most supplies. Getting down to the dock , is not easy, 3 flights of stairs , very steep , but the pics don't make it seem that way, but it is.

Owner's Response: This has been the only bad comment we have received about the house. The pictures show the floor plan which I can't understand is "weird"? Each floor has a deck with stairs and landings down to the next level. They are not steep. All levels have a bathroom, so not sure why this comment was made. There is a full bath on 2 levels and 1/2 bath on the other.

This was THE perfect place for a girlfriend birthday celebration!! We were worried about finding an unfamiliar place when arriving at dark, but the cabin was super easy to find off the main Hwy in town. Three bedrooms on three floors, each having their own balcony, was a great setup for us. The home had everything we needed for preparing our meals, and wine glasses for relaxing on the decks. We spent 95% of our time sitting on the deck overlooking the lake. We saw other beautiful homes across the lake, but they set a long way from the lake, whereas we felt like we were sitting right on top of the lake. It was very quiet and peaceful, even with the occasional boaters. The living area was plenty big enough for us to sit and visit when we did venture in from outside. There was a nice game room with a ping pong table, tv, and bar overlooking the lake, but we couldn't drag ourselves inside long enough to try it out. We had a very nice relaxing spa treatment at "Bodysense" Spa in town, which rated right up with ones we've had in larger cities. We picked up delicious BBQ and wine from local shops, and brought it back to the cabin, so we wouldn't need to get back out in the day. We wanted to spend as much time outside as we could. We've rented many cabins before, but we all commented none had been as relaxing as this one. We are already planning our next visit.
