Soul and convenience! Our lovingly updated 1930s cape-style farmhouse is situated on high ground right above the mouth of the Narraguagus Bay. Eagles, ospreys and gulls soar overhead. Kitchen, dining area, and 2 of the 3 upstairs BR's overlook the bay, its islands, and the ocean (facing east for the sunrise).

"Gust House" isn't a misspelling, BTW: it's a tribute to the sea breezes--and sometimes high winds--here!

Our current tenants' intention is to buy this property, and we're working with them, so we're declining bookings here at least through Sept. 2017, and possibly through next spring. The July-August 2017 dates you'll see open on this calendar are for our amazing other waterfront property in Milbridge, just across the bay. (Much of the fall is also still open there.). It is VRBO 653494, and we hope you'll take a look at that uniquely beautiful vacation spot with its own peninsula and sand beach.

About Danielle Woerner

We're former New York Staters, who camp-vacationed for over a decade in the Acadia area and other parts of coastal Maine, making 2 or 3 trips per summer. Finally we decided to buy a property on the water that we could fix up and enjoy coming to as our vacation home base, and to share with vacation renters too. I'm a writer, musician and songwriter, & found I did some of my best creative work at the house.

Now, we live full-time across the Bay, where we operate a small music & arts center, the Sunrise County Arts Institute. This means that the owners of this property are now locals, and available easily for any issues or needs you have during your stay.

We've become quite involved in community betterment on a number of fronts since we moved here full-time in 2014-15, and are part of the core group of people actively helping to make Milbridge a destination, not just a reservation on your vacation route.

Why Danielle Woerner chose Down East

The house is in lower Washington County, the last coastal county in Maine before Canada. It was an affordable locale, less touristy and crowded than Hancock County, and still within easy reach of the places we've come to love in the Acadia-Schoodic area -- plus gives us good access to artsy Lubeck and Eastport and Canada's coast in the other direction. Milbridge itself is a real town, not a tourist town. It's a tightly knit community, but also very friendly to friendly visitors. Our neighbors include lobster fishermen, teachers, skilled workers, artisans, farmers, various kinds of professionals, as well as retirees and others who came to visit and decided to relocate here. The town has all the needed amenities and some frills too. People are real here, unpretentious, and good neighbors who look out for each other and for us and our guests.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Having this house was what hooked us on moving to Milbridge permanently. When this house was our vacation foothold in Maine, as soon as we'd arrive after our day-long drive from the Hudson Valley, my spirit said 'Ahhhh'! -- either relaxing at the sight of the water in the daytime, or expanding as I looked up at the night sky with thousands of clear twinkling stars. Very little light pollution here!

You can look at the bay and its islands all day from the back rooms & deck of the house, or the lower deck right over the water. Swimming right off that deck in the protected (if Maine-chilly) waters of a little cove. Nice tree-shaded walking in the area. Gardens on the property; eagles courting in the trees down by the water.

We found it so lovely at the house that we didn't go far afield very often on our vacations. We enjoyed making meals and eating out on the back deck, the privacy of the house and back yard, the views. Bar Harbor and the main part of Acadia, which is spectacular, feel a bit touristy by comparison when you can have similar sights, sounds, rocks to climb, etc., all to yourself at parks much closer by, like the Schoodic Pt. part of Acadia, just half an hour away.

But the house is great for adventurous tourists too: the location in Milbridge is perfect as a middle ground between the Acadia/MDI area and, in the other direction, places like Roque Bluffs, Jasper Beach, Lubeck, Eastport, and Campobello Island (bring your passports for that last one--Campobello is Canada.)

BTW, about reviews: we've had this house off the summer-rental market for a couple of years, with long-term tenants, so our VRBO listing was dormant. We once had at least 10 rave reviews on the listing, though you'll only see 3 reviews here now. More available on request.

Notes:
Breathtaking view of the bay - islands - ocean and picturesque working lobster pound. Overall decor incorporates new comfort & safety features with preservation of period and original details including charming wallpapers - tin ceilings - original wood floors. NOTE: While we have had parties of 6 stay at the house, it's more comfortable with 5 or fewer guests. Dining table comfortably seats 6, and the kitchen peninsula has 2 stools. We can provide on request a large folding table, seating 6, which can be set up on the front porch or the back deck outside the kitchen/DR. Re: laundry facilities. Washer & dryer in basement work very well & are handy. But the area is a real basement, with rough-hewn stairs, low ceilings & pipes overhead. Tall or less adventurous guests may prefer the laundromat behind the supermarket in town (which has wi-fi). :)

We have used VRBO many times and this property is accuratly described. Very comfortable in a great location on the water. The town is small and friendly with several good little restaurants. It's a great place to explore Down East and the Acadia area. The owner is very helpful.

Fantastic location.

From our first contact, Danielle was most helpful and informative. The property was exactly as described, very well-equipped and more than met our expectations. What is impossible to describe in words or photos, was the location. The view was absolutely stunning - the property was private but not isolated and was a short drive from an excellent supermarket, several eating places and the superb Joshy's Place, a takeout, supplying some of the best lobster rolls you could possibly imagine.

The location is also very convenient for some great sightseeing and hiking.

All things considered this really was great value for the modest price of the rental.

Delightful home and hosts, super location!

Our stay at the Gust House was such a pleasure! The house is comfortable, well-appointed, with many thoughtful touches, and the view from the entire back of the house and property is superlative. Though the house is on a local road, the back yard with its deck and lawn seating is completely private. The location was great both locally (proximity to town, lobster pound, beach areas, restaurants, McClellan Park) and also as a central spot between Acadia to the south/west, and Lubeck and Eastport on the way to Canada in the other direction. Neighbors are mostly year-round lobster fisherman and their families, so we felt we were experiencing "the real Maine." Rental was very reasonable. We plan to come back again - and again!
