Property description

This wonderfully restored stone farmhouse dates back to the 13th Century. Decorated in a French Country style that combines old world charm with modern conveniences for today’s traveler. A comfortable south facing house, “La Borie des Combes” is full of the beautiful diffused light that has attracted artists to the region for decades. The meter thick stone walls provide natural coolness to the interior, and the outside has a peaceful, restful area for relaxing after a day of sightseeing. After dinner, walk to the “private” castle a mile up the road or explore the surrounding woods. Details about the house are at our website francestonehouse. Arrive on Saturday and visit the market in St Cyprien on Sunday to stock up for your stay. The area is rich in history with castles around every bend and caves dating back to prehistoric times. Canoe down the Dordogne, cycle the back roads through tiny villages, walk through gardens, visit local markets, go fishing, ride high above the valley in a hot air balloon, catch the marvelous falconry display at Chateau de Milandes . Visit the castle at Beynac (4km) then cross the river to Castelnaud home of a fabulous medieval museum. Explore the staircases and secret courtyards of Sarlat by day and attend a performance of Shakespeare in the evening. This area is rich in history with something for everyone. Once you book we will send you sample itineraries to help you research your trip.

During July and August the night markets bustle with activity and the Festival du Perigord Noir offers internationally renowned soloists and orchestras in over twenty different settings throughout the area including Saint Arnand de Coly, the churches of Plazac, Auriac, Rouffignac and Sarlat as well as the orange grove of Eyrignac Manor.

Experience a luscious French repast by booking a French chef available on request who will come to La Borie des Combes and prepare a meal especially for you and your family or group. If you like, a cooking lesson can be included.

You enter into La Maison through the kitchen, which is the heart of the original house and has everything you need to prepare a delicious meal, including a 5 burner gas stove. The table seats six, but can be extended to seat up to 10.

The salon has a huge white stone fireplace with a woodstove. There is seating for 9 in the salon. The salon also has a CD Stereo system with a selection of great CD’s and video DVD’s and a paper back book selection for your use during your visit.

There are two large bedrooms and two bathrooms. One of the bathrooms is very large with a unique fountain. One bedroom has a very comfortable king size bed and the other a comfortable, queen size bed. All beds have memory foam for a comfortable night’s sleep. A rollaway bed is available on request for 1 child (or 2 small children). An additional en suite bedroom can be added at an additional charge, if you need the extra space to sleep six adults (this ensuite bedroom can also be rented separately). We provide towels, bed linens, fluffy bathrobes, soap, hair dryers, toilet paper, paper towels, and assorted spices. The organic garden is full of fresh herbs for your use.

There is a large umbrella covered table in the garden with six chairs for romantic outdoor dining with a view of the Dordogne River.

This beautiful area is ideal for canoeing on the river, cycling through the many small villages and back roads, or enjoying the many marked hiking trails that take you off the beaten path in a very special way.

If you want to rent bikes, we work with what we feel is the best cycle rental company in the area. Your bicycles are delivered to the house and yours to use for the week, along with detailed maps with different routes and distances for each. A truly wonderful service.

The hiking in this area is superb. You can walk out through the garden gate and hike as far as you would like with spectacular views along the way. There is a prehistory site that you can walk to within minutes of the house. This is not a tourist attraction, but rather is on a hiking trail. If you are even more adventurous, hike up to the top of the hill to explore old castle ruins, with an even more spectacular view. If you prefer a more sublime walk, you can go down the hill each morning for fresh croissants from Patisserie Lucco - the best patisserie in the whole area.

And much, much more.

Other Activities

One of the best things about being in this area is the extensive list of activities available to you. With the Dordogne River close by, seeing the sights with a different prospective is fascinating. Canoeing and kayaking are available at numerous locations along the Dordogne and Vezere rivers as well as the boat tours that are available in both Beynac and La Roque - Gageac, offer a most pleasant way to spend a day. Photography from your river experience presents a whole new world of photo opportunities. Along with the river activities, the abundant beauty of the Dordogne Valley countryside turns a leisurely drive along the winding back roads into an adventure you’ll treasure forever. Antique shows (brocante) and local markets are always fun and memorable. Leave extra room in your luggage for small goodies you may pick up. The night markets in the summer months are a very special treat that is uniquely French. Different from the markets that are held during the daytime, these events are not to be missed. With long tables set up in quaint ancient villages, you can enjoy the offerings of freshly prepared, cooked, local specialties. Cycling in this area is some of the best in the world. Literally anything, ranging from very easy flat touring, to the most challenging hilly back roads will satisfy your cycling needs in a way you’re sure to remember. The French trail system is one of the best in the world. Maintained but not sanitized, it winds through the countryside in some of the most charming and interesting routes we’ve ever seen. We hike these trails every Sunday and have yet to be disappointed. You are welcome to join us if you like.

In the summer months there are musical treats to experience. Our friend Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) usually puts on a show or two with some extraordinary local musicians. In Sarlat there is a host of events throughout the summer season and naturally, a lively Bastille Day celebration is hosted on July 14th.

Whatever your tastes or interests, this area is bound to offer a healthy taste of France that you’ll love. So get ready and enjoy France … at it’s best.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: We are a retired California couple who decided to make France our home. We reside on the property in a separate unit with our docile collie dogs, Hula and Chloe. In the photo we are canoeing down the Dordogne River, a favorite summer activity.

Why the Owner Chose Bézenac, France:
Actually, this house was chosen in a moment. After traveling around France for the past twenty years we came to the Dordogne for the first time in 2001. A driving tour of France was the mission but a stop in this area made such a lasting impression on us we had to return. On the second trip our memories and feelings of “coming home” were all confirmed. On a drive to Beynac from the west, about a mile from where our lovely farm house stands, it hit me…..I turned to my wife and told her “We’re going to live here some day” I knew it and so did she. We had just about had our fill of the rat race in California and it was time for another chapter. Attually it was another book! It was on our third trip here that we went searching for our new home. It didn’t take long. After seeing just one other house our immobilier said, “I have just what you want”. A short drive later, we saw it. It was one of those peak moments. My wife walked into the kitchen and said with utter certainty…. “I love it. We’ll take it!” Three months later we were given a hand full of huge old keys and went home….. Not to California. To Bezenac. The love affair continues to this day and only seems to get better.

The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
High-speed Wireless Broadband service and free international phone calling make it easy to keep in touch with family and friends as well as checking on reservations and schedules. With our local experience and ever growing list of recommendations for dining, places to go and local events we’ll be happy to give you any help you need to maximize your time here. Bicycle rental can be arranged from a reasonably priced English speaking local that offers maps and cycling route suggestions so that you can get the most from your rental. Catering and French cooking lessons can also be arranged either here at the house or at another location. Our beautiful garden is yours to enjoy at La Borie des Combes. A large outdoor table that comfortably seats six to eight people, and outfitted with a shade umbrella is the perfect place to enjoy the wonderful local food and libations. A gas barbeque is also available for your use. There are also two other smaller rental areas that are available on this property. They can be rented separately or along with the main part of the house. Please email us for details on these options.
