About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Sit by a river.

Find peace and meaning

In the rhythm

Of the lifeblood of the Earth.

Little House on the River is nestled at the base of the western slope of the Cumberland Mountains in the scenic Rocky River Community of Van Buren County. Situated in the heart of Middle Tennessee, and centrally located between Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville, it is located 2.8 miles off Hwy. 30 - 15 miles east of McMinnville and 15 miles west of Spencer at 14142 Rocky River Road, Rock Island, TN.

This cozy little cottage was completed in October 2008. It is surrounded by over 5 acres of privacy, has 640 square feet of living space, 384 square feet of covered porches, and a 162 square feet patio.

You won't be able to resist relaxing in the swing or sitting in one of the rocking chairs on the back porch as you watch the river wash your cares away. You will also want to hike along the almost 1400 feet of clean, spring-fed river. Keep your eyes open for beavers, otters, squirrels, chipmunks, wood ducks, blue herons, Canada geese, and the neighbor's cows across the river. Bring your fishing pole - the river is stocked with trout several times a year.

You will want to walk down to the river and spend some peaceful time there with its beautiful views up and down the river. There is a hammock right above there that is just waiting for you. You are going to love the soothing sounds of the water as the river ripples by.

The house has one bedroom with a queen-size bed and window with a view of the river. There is one bath with a tub/shower combo. Bed linens are provided as well as towels and wash cloths. Towels for any river activity are NOT provided. There is a sofa in the living room that includes two recliners -- it is NOT a sofa bed. A TV with DISH service and DVD player are also in that area. The kitchen is stocked with basic cooking and serving supplies. A phone is NOT provided. Cell phone service is possible but not optimal. A heating / air conditioning unit is located in the living area, along with an electric 'wood burning' stove. Cuddle up in the winter months or open the windows in mild weather to enjoy the refreshing breeze.

A charcoal grill is on site, but you'll need to bring your own charcoal. There is also a fire ring with firewood provided.

About Deborah C Moffitt

Your hosts are Debby & Joe Moffitt. We have always lived in Middle Tennessee and feel fortunate to be so close to so much natural beauty. Joe is a retired school administrator and we still operate a nursery - Shangri La Farm - primarily selling daylilies. Together, we have 12 children and 30 grandchildren.

Deborah C Moffitt purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Deborah C Moffitt chose Rock Island

After looking at river / creek property for several years, we found our dream spot near the headwaters of Rocky River. It is located close to our primary residence and is a favorite spot when children and grandchildren visit.

As much as we love this place we call home, we also love to travel. As we have done that, and used a variety of accommodations, we have discovered that our favorite places to stay are similar to what we built overlooking Rocky River. Our idea of a perfect getaway - is just that - a getaway: from the traffic, the crowds, the noise, and the lure of tourist traps.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is a real plus. Rock Island State Park is about 15 minutes away. Cumberland Caverns is about the same. Driving just a little bit longer will take you to beautiful Fall Creek Falls State Park. As fun as those destinations are, there are not words to describe the picturesque Rocky River farming community, the sounds and sights of nature, and the calming effect of the river as it ripples by. We think you'll love Little House as much as we do! Leave your cares behind and come recharge at one of the prettiest little spots on earth.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are happy to have your 'Little House' as part of our annual calendar. A get-away weekend is always a gift to us and love the peaceful setting you have created. The rain forced us inside for rest and games with S. Happy for the sunshine today! (And a little fishing :). Thank you for your hospitality and daylily.

Perfect for some rest & relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Little House on the River. It is a truly beautiful place to forget the rest of the world. Sitting on the back porch listening to the river flow by & watching the cattle graze across the river while being surrounded by natures best will melt away your cares. The house is really clean with nice furnishings inside & out. Pictures & words just don't do this place justice. Beautiful rural countryside but easy to find & close to several attractions makes this a fantastic getaway spot. Please don't just take my word for it though. Book this place & see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Beautiful & Quiet

  • 5 of 5

Had a great time clearing my head, and got some good reading & writing done! Saw geese, ducks, the cows across the river, tiny fish, found a snakeskin on the rocks, ate grapes. Lovely lovely!

Owner's Response: So glad you had a “lovely” stay. We’re surprised you didn’t see any deer - they love those grapes (muscadines), too!!! At least they left some for you. 😊? We hope you’ll come back at your earliest opportunity. Thank you so much for choosing Little House on the River. Debby & Joe

Peaceful retreat! Loved having coffee on the back porch and listening to the river.

This property is perfect for two to get away from the city and relax. We enjoyed the peaceful sound of the river running over the rocks. We even built a fire at night and just listened to evening sounds. This was the best three day weekend we have had in a long while.

My husband and I felt like we had gone on a week's worth of vacation after our long weekend in the Little House. We needed a getaway for just us with all that life has brought our way lately. My husband told me when I told him what I was searching for: a sweet little cottage on a private area of water, that he was pretty sure I was not going to find what I was looking for close to home. I could not have found a more perfect match to what I had imagined in my own head :) We walked along the driveway and looked at wildflowers and deer. We waded in our own private little river. We watched fish and butterflies and birds. We were able to tie off our floats and float in our own private oasis. The water was cold, refreshing and crystal clear. We loved the outdoor grill as it overlooked the little river. We enjoyed our coffee on the porch watching nature every morning. We had intended to go spend a day at Rock Island but loved the Little House so much we came back instead. Debby and Joe were very helpful and accommodating. Joe suggested we try the burgers and Friday's fried chicken at the Rock Island Market. We loved the food and the hospitality. We really liked the catfish. I honestly cannot think of a more relaxing vacation. The house was warm and inviting. We hope to stay here again soon.

A Great Getaway Place on the Rocky River

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at The Little House on the River was just ideal. The description and pics, and great as they are, just don't capture the magic of this setting. The house has all you really need to kick back and just take it easy for a few days or a week. We used the tv only once, to play a movie (there's a good selection already there). Mostly we read, listened to the sounds of the river, took walks, rocked in chairs outdoors, listen to birds sing, and chilled. We made one run in the car to eat lunch at The Rock Island Cafe, a combination gas station, hardware store, fishing supplies store, and a meat and three cafe in the back. It came highly recommended to us by the owners. If you're looking for an inexpensive retreat for a couple to get back to reality, look no further. We'll be going back there again for R&R.

Rock Island State Park is close by and it offers a lot of outdoor activities: fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, bicycling, swimming, etc. Fall Creek Falls is a little further away and offers these options: swimming (including a pool) hiking, canoeing, paddle boating, bicycling, horseback riding, golf, tennis, etc. Cumberland Caverns is a short drive if you'd like to do a little spelunking. Links to all of these are at our website, along with several others.
