The Secret Seashell: Water view, Pool, Pristine Area

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Villa, 3 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

The Secret Seashell is a 3-bedroom/3.5 bath masonry ocean front villa located in the Coral Bay area, on the pristine and remote peninsula of Fortsberg Estate. Listen to the waves on the rocky shore below as you lounge under the shade of the gazebo, by the pool.

The thoughtful design of The Secret Seashell enables it to be rented as both a three-bedroom for six guests or, alternatively, as a one-bedroom villa for two, as the two bedrooms on the ground floor can be closed off. The two downstairs bedrooms have full private baths, small refridgerators, coffee makers and private ocean -view balconies. The master bedroom upstairs has a large outdoor shower connected to a private bath. With luxury linens, and every amenity, including beach chairs and coolers, The Secret Sea Shell is waiting to be discovered as the ideal vacation home.

The Great Room is designed with an open Caribbean-style floor plan, with a fully equipped and modern kitchen looking out into a gracious sitting area and the breathtaking private view beyond. The covered masonry balcony is a luxurious place to soak in the peaceful surroundings. The view is entirely private, with not another house in close proximity, surrounded by the pure elements of nature.

The special area of Estate Fortsberg, where this villa is located, is pristine and private, along a private road at the ocean's edge. It is graced by untouched shoreline, ideal for beach combing, and home to variety of wildlife including a great many birds. A corral along the country road leading to The Secret Sea Shell provides opportunities for horseback riding in the area. And yet, as private as this protected peninsula is, it is only a five-minute drive from the hamlet of Coral Bay with its eclectic and affordable restaurants, shops and opportunities for watersports. The National Park, with its hiking trails and gorgeous beaches is also nearby. A more desirable situation cannot be found on the beautiful island of St. John.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We couldn’t have been more pleased staying at Secret Sea Shell. We have been coming to St. John for over 20 years and always stayed in the Coral Bay/Calabash areas. What a hidden gem……and your place is exceptional! The amenities, the care you have put into the garden, the detail to the entire home just makes this a wonderful getaway. Spending three weeks allowed us to get to know the locals. Must go: Monday night open mic night at Concordia!; Angels Rest (the floating bar) in Hansen Bay; Ms. Lucy’s Sunday brunch; Aqua Bistro!! Thank you for sharing your home.

Great Stay

  • 4 of 5

We have been to St John at least a dozen times. We like the Coral Bay area as it is less hectic . We usually rent a villa on top of Beaurodeau Mountain for the views and breezes. With that being said we opted for a location on this trip that was a little closer to the water. The villa is a advertised. Being at a lower elevation allowed us to get to Coral Bay and the East End beaches faster. Also the Salt Pond area is easier to get to. But, being at a lower elevation does make it harder to enjoy the inside of the villa due to temperatures. The master bedroom does not really cool down as it has very high ceilings and a louvered door to the great room. Not sure what they were thinking with that. The lower two bedrooms are fine. The great room was usually too warm to sit during the day and it was still hot into the evening. This is not a real problem as there are great areas outside around the pool to relax. I would have given the villa 5 stars but with the issue stated above coupled with a rocky rutted dirt road leading to the villa I had to give it 4. Just be aware that many villas in the Coral Bay area do have dirt roads. Some can be much worse than the one to Secret Seashell. It did get a little old rocking over the pot holes and rocky sections. All in all a great trip.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay! I'm sure the outdoor gazebo was a more pleasant area to spend your days. We are getting together with other neighbors in that area to grade the unpaved section of the access road. Sorry that had not been done prior to your stay.

St John's Secret Treasure

  • 5 of 5

We are back to reality, but so grateful for such a wonderful stay at Secret Seashell!

The secret seashell is a true treasure on St John and, if we are ever able to return to St John, we will be looking to stay there again. The views from everywhere in the house, pool, patio and beautiful landscape were all amazing! The indoor living areas were very clean and comfortable, giving a true feeling of home.

The only challenge which would be good to plan for in advance is the inability to use a cell phone at the house(no signal for AT&T or Verizon). The house phone did not keep a charge (which may be fixed before long) but the Wi-Fi at the house allowed texting, so we were able to work around this to stay in touch with the rest of our family.

We loved the Secret Seashell, and would highly recommend it!!

  • 5 of 5

The Secret Seashell is a stunning home and property. The home is beautifully decorated and comfortable to be in. We had everything we needed for a fantastic vacation. The views from all rooms, the porches and decks was astonishing. It's conveniently located yet secluded and private. We loved our time there and can't wait to go back.

I never could have imagined how beautiful this place really was until I got there! The Caribbean weather and attitude is just beautiful...hard to explain in words really. The views from this place were absolutely gorgeous. The privacy was perfect and we were still close enough to some of the local action too!

I feel great recommending this place to anybody. I know we will be going back as soon as we can!

When Time Stops

  • 5 of 5

The week we spent at the Secret Seashell was one of the most, if not the most, relaxing weeks I have ever had. It was our first time in the Caribbean. Landing in Saint Thomas, and driving through to the ferry dock, was very beautiful and pretty close to what I had envisioned. We took the very short ferry ride over to St. Johns and this is where paradise began! The drive to The Secret Seashell gives you a taste of what this little quiet island has to offer in picturesque beauty, and the feel of stepping back in time.

When we arrived at The Secret Seashell, I could not believe how incredible it really is! It looks great in the photos on-line, but nothing can capture the beauty of this place more than being there in person. I have never felt stress melt away like this before. The views are so incredible. The feel of seclusion is so peaceful. You only have to go literally steps away to step back in time. Next door are the remains of an old fort with still in place cannons. You can just stand up there and imagine what it was like 300 years ago. From the villa, you can sit poolside feeling the light Easterly winds, the sounds of the ocean waves crashing on shore, and you may hear or see some of the wild donkeys that meander around the island.

The people of the island are as polite as you will come by. If you want to get a good feel of locals mixed with vacationers, and one the best burgers you’ll eat, you have to stop at Skinny Legs. You will probably meet people from all over the world, and you won’t be able to resist a little shopping too. With in a day or two, you’ll feel like a local.

There are plenty of sight seeing things to do on the island, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The only downfall is that to do them, you have to leave The Secret Seashell. When your there sitting on the balcony or under the cabana next to the pool, you never want to leave. Never. If you want your world to slow down, St. Johns is the place you want to go & The Secret Seashell is the place you want to stay! This was the most relaxing week of my life. Thank you, to the owners for building paradise in paradise.
