About Ellen Glew, owner

Having vacationed for many summers in coastal Maine, I decided to build a permanent home there, where I can enjoy weekends and summer vacations with my daughters and their friends (for now) and where I plan to live during retirement. I fell in love with the natural beauty of Harpswell - with its many fingers and islands, and I love the fact that it is 'off the beaten tourist track.' Everywhere you look there are water views that change with every turn in the road. Harpswell is peaceful, yet so convenient to the amenities of Brunswick, Freeport, Bath and even Portland (just 40 minutes away).

Ellen Glew, owner purchased this house in 2002

Why Ellen Glew, owner chose Harpswell

It is easy to get to -- just over 2 hours from my primary home in Massachusetts -- and it is situated in one of the most beautiful coastal communities in Maine or anywhere in the U,S. Harpswell has more coastline than any community in the United States -- some 230 miles of shoreline and dozens of islands.

What makes this house unique

It is a wonderful place to just relax, sit on the float and read a book and watch the last rays of the sun playing on the water. I love eating breakfast out on the balcony, watching the lobster boats and all the wildlife on the water, hiking along trails with spectacular water views; enjoying the warm waters of Harpswell Sound, either swimming or just floating on an inner tube. It is also a great base location from which to explore the many attractions of mid-Coast Maine. For the more adventuresome, it is also a do-able day trip to Acadia National Park and Mt. Desert Island.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We absolutely loved our stay at your house. The local lobsters and clams are to die for. The layout of your home is so open and airy, and we loved dining on the balcony. The kitchen nook and furnishings are cozy. And the waters of Harpswell Sound are warm -- you can actually stay in the water! Good family fun hiking up the Fairy House trail across the street up to that spectacular cliff walk. Lots to do with nearby shopping at Bean's and the outlets in Freeport, as well as the shops of Bath. Wolf's Neck State Park in Freeport also great for hiking. And for sand and surf, excursions to Reid State Park and Popham Beach are terrific. It's fun to explore the entire mid-coast region -- with trips to Boothbay, Pemquid Light and farther up to Camden and Rockland - best to do that on weekdays to avoid the Route 1 weekend traffic. Movie theaters, mini golf, and bowling in nearby Four Corners also good for family fun.

Truly unforgettable

  • 5 of 5

This was one of the best locations and homes I have ever rented. Fully equipped, tastefully furnished, truly a home away from home. Never felt out of place . The owner is one of the most caring owners I have ever dealt with, thoughtful and attentive. Available to talk live if anyone has any questions

Out of date and smells.

  • 3 of 5

We were 6 senior citizens that wanted to relax, the property seemed to be private on HomeAway and come to find out the owner was below us and used the parking space in front of rental. Couldn’t access back yard, towels were sour, sheets were old and smelly, we had 3 wash clothes for 6 people for 3 nights. No screens on windows so you couldn’t open the window, and it was quite warm during the day and uncomfortable at night. An amazing view from the balcony, however we would have liked to sit near the water and have a fire in the pit that was in the yard.

We are pretty easy to please and had enjoyed a previous rental in Maine, and mean no harm to the owner, but somethings needs to be said. Thank you for allowing us to rent this property.

Owner's Response: Renters wrote me with apologies. This review was intended for a property they stayed in NY after my home in Maine. This review is NOT for my home, NOT my listing. They really enjoyed their stay in our home, no complaints and gave my home a total thumbs up.

Family reunion

  • 5 of 5

I was most pleasantly surprised by the property when I meet Betsey to get the keys. I don't feel the pictures in the VRBO add even come close too showing how lovely this home truly is! Betsy & Ellen were nothing but wonderful in all of our dealings. Betsey especially made my family feel so welcome, leaving us fresh organic vegetables, and coming to see us off Sunday morning. My elderly parents have not stopped talking about how nice Betsey was.,

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I am planning to update my photo gallery at next opportunity, and your kind remarks about my home have given me more motivation to do so! Betsey is indeed so kind and welcoming. She enjoyed meeting your family, too!

Great stay at a wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this place. The dock and water access were one of the primary reasons we came to summer in Maine. Swimming, kayaking, birdwatching and catching the sunset were memorable events. We would highly recommend this rental to anyone coming to vacation in Maine.

Wonderful vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

A great property with a very accommodating owner and caretaker. We have stayed in the Harpswell/Bailey Island area many times over the years, and our experience here was first rate. The house has everything you could need, both inside and out: well stocked kitchen and indoor activities, a great yard, as well as kayaks and a canoe. The convenient location makes it as easy to get down onto the islands as well as up into Brunswick. The house has a beautiful view down the Sound and has easy access to walking trails. We had great communication with the owner and the caretaker. All questions and concerns were answered immediately, both while setting the trip up and during our stay (thank you to Ellen and Betsey!!). They take care of every detail, right down to posting the tide chart on the refrigerator so that you can plan your kayak excursions without any additional work. Last note, based on previous reviews: the master bed does have a firm mattress. Easy suggestion if it is TOO firm for you: bring an egg-shell mattress topper, or just swing up to Walmart in Brunswick to purchase one (less than $30). Great stay-highly recommended!!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review and for your positive comments. I also like your suggestion for the mattress topper. I will make sure to purchase one and have it available for those who want a "softer sleep" in the downstairs master bedroom, so that visitors do not have to go out and get one.
