Laurie is proud to be involved in local town politics and works to ensure the rental properties are Legal and approved by the town. Laurie sits on the Accommodations and Tax Committee for the Town of Mount Pleasant to dispense tax funds. She is also proud to have been chosen to be involved actively with HomeAway/ VRBO on the Owner's Advisory Council. In February of 2017, this house won a National Contest by showcasing the gorgeous Master Bathroom. Laurie is a part time travel specialist for international all inclusive resorts, and European River Cruises. Laurie brings her professional hospitality experience and expectations into the rental properties.

After a high powered corporate career, and then owning a successful retail chain, George now is thrilled to welcome you to our rental vacation properties. George ensures that your visit is comfortable and smooth. He oversees the maintenance and improvements of the house, and keeps the grounds manicured. George takes pride in seeing that the house meets, or exceeds, your expectations. You will find George out on his boat in the waterways surrounding the house, or walking our Pomeranian dog, Gus.

We live on the property and so, of course, treat it with extra loving care. We were drawn to the unique waterfront property with the southern feeling and privacy, with location, location, location. The waterfront private dock combined with beaches and downtown make this a perfect spot. ** It is very important to us that you are aware that we live in a full and private apartment attached to this house.

What makes this house unique

This house is so close to Charleston, and with the boat landing at the end of the street, but also upscale. Everyone loves the outside and the dock. Aside from the private property peninsula, it is surrounded by water and has water views of the creeks, the rivers, and the marshes. It is the water views and the tidal changes that really make this property spectacular. It is all about the fabulous waterfront location, the ebb and flow of the tides, the natural wildlife, and the privacy, combined with a comfortable savvy home. What a way to enjoy Historic Charleston, the Beaches and the marshes! The location can't be beat, as is evidenced by the mega multi million dollar homes in the area.

Yes, we spent every evening on that beautiful wrap-around porch, telling stories and singing songs. A gathering of 6 friends from far-flung areas of the country gathered together for 6 days of Southern Hospitality from Laurie and George. That porch also provided the spot for early morning cups of strong coffee as we waited for everyone to arise before breakfast was served.

The home is as described by many; spacious, comfortable, well-decorated and well-stocked. It is impossible to add an original thought. It's all been covered. We all thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully landscaped property, the water access, the privacy, the tips given to us for beaches and tourist destinations, the kayaks and the WiFi access.

One of the highlights of our stay was when we were surprised one afternoon to a cooler full of crabs at our front door. This provided a whole host of wild laughter and entertainment as we novices tried to figure out how to steam and clean them. Fortunately, the homeowners provided much needed guidance and assistance when they discovered our ineffectiveness surrounding the extraction of the meat from the crusty shell. It gave us all a new appreciation for the amount of work it takes to create a crab cake and the amount of money you spend at a restaurant for such a meal is a reflection of that labor.

Another memorable night was when we all gathered in the living room to watch the movie, "The Big Chill" - a DVD copy is (not surprisingly) available in the home. It was a reminder of how important friendships really are, and the time to gather is not only at a funeral or a reunion, but anytime you can.

Like a dream come true!

We had a fantastic time at The Big Chill House in Charleston! Laurie and George were great hosts and the home and surroundings were absolutely gorgeous! The house itself is beautifully decorated, well laid out, and it's obvious that the hosts had their guests comfort in mind. We also loved sitting outside and watching the cargo ships go by.

I look forward to my next trip to The Big Chill House and I fully recommend staying there to anyone traveling to the area.

Owner's Response: We never get tired of watching the ships on the river. ....It is an amazing sight to see from the porch out the back....and a very spectacular scene at night while relaxing in the hot tub and watching the ship lights move by. Maybe next time you will also see some Dolphins visiting in the creek off the dock. The house and grounds were OK, but we found the house dark. We have two complaints: The pillows were bad as they "deflated" to almost nothing when your head hit them. There were no pillows for side-sleepers, that is, I had to stuff blankets in my pillow case to give it the height needed. This is not good for sleeping and I had five nights of poor sleep. The second issue is that the owners live above the first floor bedroom, so walking about by them made it difficult to sleep in the first-floor bedroom. Finally, the clothes washer smelled of mildew. It stunk.

I did appreciate getting some positive written feedback from you. ........ You emailed to me: .........“The kayaks were great for the grand kids. They had never been in one before, but learning progressed well during the week. We enjoyed your back porch and the short distance to Charleston. We also watched the container ships - a joy”........... *** RE: IMPORTANT INFO for Future RENTERS: * - FOOTSTEPS: This house is constructed with a totally separate owner apartment. All parking, entrances, decking, porch, fenced area....etc etc.... are completely separate from the rental house - there is no usage overlap between the rental and my apartment. Renters have full privacy. The 3000 sf house is the rental. The owner's apartment entrance is on the opposite side of the house. Within the owner's upper level apartment there is a 5 x 8 foot corner area that is over the main level bedroom and bathroom, ( the balance of the apartment is over the garage) so it is possible to hear footsteps from that 5 x 8 portion of the apartment. * -PILLOWS: There are 24 assorted good pillows in the house for each rental group. Each bed is made up with a minimum of 4 pillows. I agree that No guest should be uncomfortable, and should choose a more suitable pillow from a different room. * - WASHER: The gasket in the front loading washing machine definitely had mildew. Thank you for pointing that out. It has been deep cleaned and deodorized and the issue is fully corrected. Our goal is to exceed expectations. We correct issues and problems immediately, especially during the visit if we are made aware.

Beautiful and homey

We went to Charleston for five days with four other friends from other parts of the country. We had scoped out the house a few months prior to our stay and knew it was beautiful, but when we arrived for the visit, it was even better than we remembered. The house has everything anyone could want in a home away from home. Everyone in our group knew their way around a kitchen and we prepared a few meals and everything we needed in terms of equipment was there. On top of that, upon arrival, there was juice, cream for coffee, coffee and a few muffins and bagels. Laurie and George, our thoughtful hosts, are eager to know about anything that needs to be taken care of in the house. There are forms in each room asking for feedback on things that should be fixed or addressed. The wraparound porch is a beautiful place to gather and chat, but there are also lots of other spots for relaxing and taking in the beautiful landscaping and setting. George and Laurie also provide kayaks and paddle boards. Truly, this place has everything anyone could want for a relaxing getaway, close to Charleston but away from all the hustle and bustle of the city.
