About Martyn Leenen
My wife Catelijne and I have two children, one daughter Julia (8) and a son Hidde (6). We live in Haarlem, just 15 minutes away from our houseboat. Before I used to work for a broadcasting and publishing company but now I have my own business. Good food and nice drinks are important to me. I like to cook for friends/family and love nice wines, German wines in particular. I used to travel, read and play golf but since we have children, I have have other priorities... Oh, and I love playing chess on my App/iPhone. (This photo was inspired by Derek Zoolander)
Martyn Leenen purchased this House Boat in 2008
Why Martyn Leenen chose Amsterdam City Centre
By coincidence I saw this houseboat was for sale. I knew the unique location, on one side the old warehouses and on the other side the Zoo. Eery time we went boating with friends and we came by Artis (the Zoo) we loved the sight of zebras and giraffes in the middle of the city. The previous owners are a nice Australian couple with a baby. They lived there for four years but were about to return to Australia. Eventually Damien (the Australian owner) choose me to buy the boat and I feel very fortunate! My wife and I lived for two years on this houseboat. Because my wife was expecting we decided to move to an apartment. Living on the boat with a baby is not convenient. In the beginning it was difficult not to live on the boat but now, - when when the boat is not rented out, - we try to stay there. Our children love it and a stay on the boat always indicates we'll go to the zoo... For us staying on the boat is also holiday...!
What makes this House Boat unique
My wife and I lived in Amsterdam for over 15 years,. As students we both moves several times all over the city. The vibe, the atmosphere and the people of this little neighborhood beats everything! - just around the corner from all the best places - museums, the Nieuwmarkt, the red lights and fine restaurants - but without the city sounds from Dam Square and Leidse Square. My mother Caty and neighbor Karin will do the check in/out and cleaning. They are very helpful in providing additional information about Amsterdam, what to do outside the city (Keukenhof for example) and are more then happy to assist you for museums and or tickets, reservations in nice restaurants, etc. They also can arrange a pick up from the airport or a private boat tour. So, if you have questions or would like assistance please do not hesitate to contact them. You will receive their contact information when the booking is confirmed.

Medicijnman: Medicine for the spirit!
Fabulous houseboat & neighborhood! What a gem this old & lovingly-kept boat is. This was our 2nd stay & hope to be lucky enough to visit again. Caty & Martyn were so helpful, answering questions & explaining how everything worked. Additionally, Caty helped us set up transportation to the airport w/ awesome driver Ed. The Plantage neighborhood is lovely--quieter than some areas of the city but wonderful dining options nearby & good public transportation. Easy walking to so many attractions. Loved being across from the zoo & sitting out on deck, watching boats pass by in good weather. Kitchen has everything you need. Bed & bedding are comfortable. Our daughter slept well on the sofa bed--and we hear a new one is coming soon. Was sad to leave--the Medicijnman is medicine for your spirit!
Dear Kathryn, Thanks for your review. It was great seeing you again. Next time at your place!
A buautiful houseboat in a unique location near the centre of Amsterdam
It was excellent to re-visit Amsterdam and to see our friends De Medicijnman and Martyn Leenan (our host). The houseboat is beautifully presented, and a very relaxing place to live, near the centre of the bustling city. The location, just opposite the zebra, giraffes and elephants of Art is zoo, makes it all the more appealing. We have visited this special houseboat 4 times over nearly 20 years, and we are keen to start planning our 5th visit! Highly recommended!
Dear Jane & Kelvin,
Thanks for your review, good you were back.
Hope to see you later this year.
Peaceful, beautiful, great location
Excellent in every way! Great location, and very comfortable and quiet. Gracious and helpful host. Caty helped us with lots of information and tips. This boat has all the conveniences of a hotel or condo, plus a kitchen and laundry, with so much charm. Easy to get around and use the tram, and very nice grocery store nearby. Can’t wait to return!
Thanks for your feedback and compliments, much appreciated!
You are always welcome to return.
Martyn's houseboat was a cozy place to rest after a long day in the city. The location is ideal, a quiet but trendy neighbourhood close to the city centre. The boat was comfortable and spacious with all the amenities one could need. We felt very welcome and Karin was a friendly host. Thanks again, we will be back next time we visit Amsterdam!
Dear Doug, Thank you for your kind words, much appreciated!
Best regards, Martyn
Beautiful and unique accommodation in old Amsterdam.
We enjoyed staying in “The Medicine Man”. What a beautiful boat! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our mornings looking across the canal to the zoo. Onr morning we were treated to a mother swan and her babies to our kitchen window to be fed with bread treats! It was delightful to see the elephants and giraffes in the morning. In the evening, it was a welcome respite for two tired tourists! Caty checked us in when we arrived, and graciously showed us the boat amenities. It was located on a beautiful street, close to the tram stops and a nice grocery store. It was in a great location, accessible to the inner-city, but quiet. Kitchen was stocked with everything you need, and the bathroom was comfortable, and the bathtub is a luxury on a boat! The bed was soft and we slept well. Highly recommend for those looking for something different and adventurous! Many thanks to out hosts for sharing this with us! Many memories!
Thank you for you great and detailed review. Your experiences and kind words make us feel very good.
Amsterdam by the zoo!
We can not imagine a better spot for a houseboat !! Views of Giraffes, zebras and the new baby elephant and family . And fascinating watching the tour boats and tourists coming around to look at the zoo... GREAT spot and very handy for Supermarket and trams. Boat is very cosy and well equipped. Enjoyed our stay very much
Thank you Michael! Always feel free to return.
Best regards, Martyn
The Zoo (Artis) is right across the boat and on the other side are the beautiful canal houses (old warehouses).
We could arrange anything if it is possible or impossible, just the pink elephant on the deck will be difficult...
