Although the cottage itself is nestled into sublimely quiet surroundings (with easy access to beaches and hiking trails), it is also just minutes from more active pursuits. The newly completed Concordia Eco Complex, with its splendid seaside setting (bar, restaurant, grocery store, snorkel rental, day -trips, and yoga/massage facility) is just 0.8 miles up the road and the town of Coral Bay, with its many attractions (water sports, horseback riding, shopping, restaurants, nightlife and more) is less than a 10 minute drive away.
The nearest beach is 0.3 miles away. While a rental car is recommended (for optimal touring of the rest of the island), the Salt Pond Bay bus stop (servicing both Coral Bay and Cruz Bay is just a three minute walk away, making your stay possible without one.

About Liz Melrath
In 1988, Russ and I bought a timeshare property at Bluebeards Castle in St. Thomas and fell in love with St. John during our many trips to the island. It always our dream as we neared retirement to buy a property on St. John. It is now our pleasure to share it with you.
Liz Melrath purchased this House in 2009
Why Liz Melrath chose Estate Mandal
Quality of 2002 construction to new hurricane building code regulations - 2x6 walls, hurricane shutters and 2x8 floor boards. The Property is solid and we have weathered a few bad storms here. Felt very protected.
What makes this House unique
outstanding views from decks. We catch trade winds from Africa and have a constant refreshing breeze .

Words cannot describe how much we enjoyed our stay!!!
First, I am reluctant to write this review for selfish reasons... we want to keep this cottage our little secret!!! If you are an outdoorsy, unfussy vacationer, this is the place for you!!! The cottage had everything we wanted and more. The access to the bay was terrific for us! We also thoroughly enjoyed the seclusion. It was so quiet and peaceful, I remember what "nature" sounds like again. If you are an outdoor adventurer, then this truly is paradise. :-D We cannot wait to come back again and again.
Quiet chick shabby beach house in the hills served as a great bonding time with family
This little house sits upon a hill of which can only be reached by stairs. A smaller studio shares the stairs and didn't hear anything from them...although they may have from us! Four girls stayed here with two sharing the bed. The biggest complaint from the island, not the home, was the mosquitoes and lack of service of which Liz can't control. It would have been an issue anywhere on this side of the island. Liz was the sweetest person, very artsy and the home displays this! Must have a rental car here! The closest beach (wth sand) you can drive to is salt pond bay with a hike down. I suggest bringing your snorkel kit and some water shoes! Try Reem trail
Great stay in STJ
Had a great time using this cottage as a base camp while exploring St. John. Info that may be helpful to future guests:
- This cottage is about 30 min to Coral Bay and about 60 min to Cruz Bay
- Hot tub and TV is not working (due to recent power surge) as of 3/15/18
- No wifi/internet, no cell service for Sprint or TMobile (understandable because of recent hurricanes, just FYI)
The cottage was really well thought out. Liz left us a large new citronella candle and some spray to battle to the mosquitos (not too bad). Plenty of airflow on most days, but be prepared to sweat a bit. Great book, DVD, and CD collection along with a few board games.
The only issue we had was not being told the hot tub was out of order until we arrived on the property. It was a bummer considering that was a primary reason we booked the cottage. Great stay otherwise!
I am very happy that this couple had a great time. St John is still very much in the midst of recovery. It's going to take some more time...... Everyone until now has been very understanding of that fact.
Great stay on a quiet part of the island
We stayed here for 5 days in Feb and had a lovely time. Liz was a great host and we loved the cabin. There were 4 of us and we all slept comfortably! It is a small but lovely cabin on a quiet area of the island. It will take about 30 mins to drive to Cruz Bay, so keep that in mind, but I found the peace and solitude of the area worth the drive. The cabin has everything you need and I loved hanging out on the porch at night. We really enjoyed our stay and really recommend it!
Nice quiet location, but near some hidden gems
Liz and Russ are great and so is their property. Probably not for those looking for touristy, but if you are looking to stay at least a couple days and like some isolation and quiet, this is the place. You are close to some of the lesser used trails and beaches that are great. Coral Bay is also a nice community that was just what we were looking for to get away of the hubbub of home.
Best vacation ever
This is the most peaceful accommodation that you can imagine. It is at the far end of the island so there is very little traffic or noise. Although there is no ocean view, the view of the mountains is so peaceful. The accommodations themselves are excellent. We love the large refrigerator. The bedding is very comfortable. The shower is great. Although its inside you feel like you are outside. The chairs and coolers that are provided make it easy to go to the beach. The cottage is also filled with books, DVD's and CD's. Russ is an excellent host and offers up many ideas on his to enjoy the island.
We went to the Island post hurricane at the beginning of January. Despite doubts we were really happy that we went. The island is as beautiful as ever. There is damage but the people are resilient in recovering. Coral Bay is a little behind Cruz Bay but every day there were crews out cleaning up what ever was left.
I think the best thing about this trip was that there were fewer people than ever Not great for the island but if you"r going to the island you can expect vacant beaches and little traffic.
We were really happy that we went and we would encourage anyone else to enjoy this peaceful time on the island.
In a quiet mountain valley within NATIONAL PARK. Seven minute walk to sandy beach to snorkel .
