ABOUT WITTEN POND
'Witten Pond' is comprised of three homes on a 15-acre owner-estate, which is in the midst of the 'forever wild' Catskill State Forest Preserve in the NYC Ashokan Reservoir area and on the protected Wittenberg Stream. Our homes are best suited for one couple, or a couple with a small child and/or pet. All three of our homes have 1-bedroom and 1-bath. We do not suggest that multiple couples inquire for availability for just one home. We recommend if there is more than one couple wishing to vacation together that you consider both Lily-of-the-Valley and Witten Barn (#367478). A special package price will be offered.
The original home, circa 1910 recently restored 'Lily of the Valley,' is furnished in art and antiques. The second is a more contemporary historic home, 'Witten Gatehouse', with a spa bathroom. The third home, 'Witten Barn,' is an architectural integration of old and new including a major European-style kitchen, bathroom, and wood-fired radiant fireplace. 'Witten Pond' homes provide perfect Private Realms for a couple’s getaway.
THE WITTENBERG STREAM: A SMALL BIT OF WITTEN POND HISTORY
A “must” when visiting Witten Pond is to take a short walk up Moonhaw Road to the bridge and dead end. Beginning at Witten Pond, Moonhaw Road is a single dirt lane unchanged in 100 years! Along the way, you walk in parallel with the Wittenberg Stream, which has stayed as pristine as in the days of the Hudson River School painters and naturalist John Burroughs. Wittenberg Stream's rushing waters, which you hear from all the homes at Witten Pond, flows down from Wittenberg Mountain en route to New York City’s Ashokan Reservoir. For those who fish and have a New York State License, the Wittenberg Stream has native brook trout. You can see Wittenberg Mountain's peak from Witten Pond, given it is the third highest vertical climb in the Catskills and a part of the Slide Mountain Wilderness Range.
“LILY-OF-THE-VALLEY' is a restored circa 1900 chestnut post and beam cottage- style home. A high loft-style bedroom/library occupies the entire 2nd floor, which looks out on Witten Pond, Wittenberg Stream and high Catskill peaks. 1300 sq. ft. on two floors with porches on 3 sides. Light abounds in the master bedroom.
The 1st floor has eclectic charm and warmth ... the feeling of a home at once informal yet lavished with care and comfort. Owner’s attention to detail is everywhere: the house is furnished with antiques and Hudson Valley art. The hand crafted cherry-wood banister going upstairs is something to behold. The wood flooring was cut from trees on the property as a wedding gift to the Owner from a neighbor. An antique chestnut dining table overlooks Witten Pond through French doors leading to the porch allowing a glow of light to filter in all day long.
The 1st floor houses the master bath with authentic clawfoot tub and hand-held European shower. There is a large bay window next to the tub that overlooks Witten Pond and a secret garden. There are skylights as well, so while you're soaking in the deep clawfoot tub, you can also light candles and stargaze. The open living room/kitchen has a wood burning stream-stone fireplace and country kitchen with bluestone counters. See Amenities for details, although almost everything you would want is provided. All the appliances are new.
The porch is covered on three sides, allowing for more relaxation and stargazing at night since there is no ambient light! The stars are bright and huge.
The Sitting area in the back of the house has a wood burning Tuscan wood grill, teak sitting benches, gardens, and picnic table overlooking Witten Pond. Supervised, it is a great area for a young child to play. Swimming (at guest risk) and fishing (catch-and-release) are available in Witten Pond. The Wittenberg Stream, a classic trout stream, is just across the road parallel to our property.
Lily amenities include Wifi internet, DVD/TV, CD/radio, massage table, and excellent cell service. Again, please see Amenities for more details.

Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenagers + 1 cat) had a lovely stay at the Lily of the Valley cottage over Thanksgiving weekend. Eric was very responsive, kind and attentive to our needs. The location and surroundings were quiet and peaceful. We loved using the sauna, and we had a great time relaxing, watching movies, etc. The upstairs bedroom has a nice open floor space that ended up being ideal for throwing down a couple of mats (which we brought them from home) and getting in a little workout. The kitchen had everything we needed for the meals we cooked there. (FYI, We did not cook our Thanksgiving meal at the cottage. We ordered the food from a bistro listed in the information packet that we received when our booking was confirmed). We enjoyed what the cottage had to offer at this time of the year, but it would be interesting to go back in a slightly warmer time of year and make better use of the lovey outdoor spaces. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay.
Beautiful and peaceful
Was the perfect weekend.
Nice at first glance, but not for more than a day
Myself, my wife, our seven-month-old, and our black lab came to stay for a few days here. We ended up leaving early. When you first drive up, it's beautiful, no doubt about that. Then walking up to the cottage and seeing its old fashioned door latches and overall cottage layout were charming.
I am going to paste the list of comments, instead of writing a drawn out review. I feel a pro/con list is easier to understand. Just be warned, this place is borderline run down and the AC unit is worthless on a day over 75 degrees, there are no fans to be found anywhere for airflow, and the two ceiling fans upstairs are worthless. If you get skeeved out by the lack of cleanliness, don't rent this place. Seems like the owners have put their attention into the barn (also available to rent) and have left this place basically untouched. The whole property is up for sale (according to Zillow) so perhaps the owners have just given up trying to keep this place nice.
Beautiful scenery and setting
Pond well stocked with fish, and enjoyable to watch (catfish and carp)
Wrap around porch is great for watching rain storms
Gas grill IS on site, with two full propane tanks (tabletop unit)
Mouse droppings on counters and in closets
Furniture dirty, broken, and lumpy/hard/uncomfortable
Floors and rugs dirty and sticky (this bugged me out the most)
AC barely holds 80 degrees during the day upstairs
No screens on windows, only on two doors, so airflow is nonexistent
No screen or glass on front door so you have to keep the main door closed unless you want serious bugs inside
Shower not a shower, ok, but handle spins and hard to hold on to, short hose, useless for an adult, I don't believe this is disclosed in the listing
Stove disgusting with leftover food all around the burners
Refrigerator/freezer loud and not very cool, frozen items thawed in the freezer over the course of two days even on "colder" setting
Outlet covers falling off, exposing wires
Floor vents bent and dangerous, I cut my toe on the one by the table
No landscaping, overgrown everywhere, can't really see the pond from the porch due to overgrowth
Smells moldy/musty throughout (expected, I suppose)
Bathroom faucet leaking
Old/expired food left in cupboards
Bed uncomfortable and saggy
Apple TV inaccessible due to no remote
WiFi spotty at best
Dirty tub and shower curtains
Backyard light didn't work
Garbage left in outdoor fireplace
Dimmer switch bulbs flicker and hum in bathroom and bedroom
We were certainly shocked when we learned of this situation. Nevertheless we accept full responsibility. We believe their experience resulted from "a perfect storm" scenario of unfortunate events.
We have taken steps to correct these issues and ensure this won't happen again. In as much as we value the high customer review rating established over the years, we value even more having our guests savor in a quality getaway at any of our homes.
In an effort to make amends we have also reached out to them directly and offered a complimentary stay at any of our homes.
The cottage and pond were beautiful. Had a very nice weekend unwinding. Very quiet and secluded, great for unplugging. One issue, which I'm not sure much can be done about is that it was very buggy. I'd recommend using lots of bug spray or go in fall/winter. Lots of ticks, so be mindful and vigilant for those.
Wonderful location and wonderful cottage
We could not have imagined a better place to spend a late summer getaway. The house, the pond, the location - absolute perfection. Mornings having coffee on the porch, looking out on the pond and the mountains. Evenings sitting around the fire. Sleeping soundly and watching light break over the mountains from the comfortable bed. It will reamin one of my favorite places. Perfect for the dog - kept him on leash around the property. He seemed to like the break as well (though he did stay on full alert for intruders and any unknown critters!!!) The fact that the interior is authentic and true to the early 20th century age of the house was a plus to us. Truly felt like a step back into an earlier, simpler time of Catskill hunting camps -- with great wifi! When we couldn't figure out the internet TV, Eric was quick to come help and resolve the issue. I have to add that soaking in the old-fashioned tub, looking out on the woods and pond was a therapeutic experience. So happy we found the place.
Quiet and romantic mountain cottage with character
My wife and I really enjoyed our recent long weekend stay at Lily of the Valley. The cottage was charming, the grounds and the setting in the Catskills were just beautiful. One of the many highlights was the outdoor fireplace at the base of a steep mountain which is directly behind the house. We spent each night with a roaring fire while looking at the amazing number of stars. We would highly recommend this property for a quiet , relaxing and memorable romantic getaway!
