ABOUT WITTEN POND
'Witten Pond' is comprised of three homes on a 15-acre owner-estate, which is in the midst of the 'forever wild' Catskill State Forest Preserve in the NYC Ashokan Reservoir area and on the protected Wittenberg Stream. Our homes are best suited for one couple, or a couple with a small child and/or pet. All three of our homes have 1-bedroom and 1-bath. We do not suggest that multiple couples inquire for availability for just one home. We recommend if there is more than one couple wishing to vacation together that you consider both Lily-of-the-Valley and Witten Barn (#367478). A special package price will be offered.
The original home, circa 1910 recently restored 'Lily of the Valley,' is furnished in art and antiques. The second is a more contemporary historic home, 'Witten Gatehouse', with a spa bathroom. The third home, 'Witten Barn,' is an architectural integration of old and new including a major European-style kitchen, bathroom, and wood-fired radiant fireplace. 'Witten Pond' homes provide perfect Private Realms for a couple’s getaway.
THE WITTENBERG STREAM: A SMALL BIT OF WITTEN POND HISTORY
A “must” when visiting Witten Pond is to take a short walk up Moonhaw Road to the bridge and dead end. Beginning at Witten Pond, Moonhaw Road is a single dirt lane unchanged in 100 years! Along the way, you walk in parallel with the Wittenberg Stream, which has stayed as pristine as in the days of the Hudson River School painters and naturalist John Burroughs. Wittenberg Stream's rushing waters, which you hear from all the homes at Witten Pond, flows down from Wittenberg Mountain en route to New York City’s Ashokan Reservoir. For those who fish and have a New York State License, the Wittenberg Stream has native brook trout. You can see Wittenberg Mountain's peak from Witten Pond, given it is the third highest vertical climb in the Catskills and a part of the Slide Mountain Wilderness Range.
“LILY-OF-THE-VALLEY' is a restored circa 1900 chestnut post and beam cottage- style home. A high loft-style bedroom/library occupies the entire 2nd floor, which looks out on Witten Pond, Wittenberg Stream and high Catskill peaks. 1300 sq. ft. on two floors with porches on 3 sides. Light abounds in the master bedroom.
The 1st floor has eclectic charm and warmth ... the feeling of a home at once informal yet lavished with care and comfort. Owner’s attention to detail is everywhere: the house is furnished with antiques and Hudson Valley art. The hand crafted cherry-wood banister going upstairs is something to behold. The wood flooring was cut from trees on the property as a wedding gift to the Owner from a neighbor. An antique chestnut dining table overlooks Witten Pond through French doors leading to the porch allowing a glow of light to filter in all day long.
The 1st floor houses the master bath with authentic clawfoot tub and hand-held European shower. There is a large bay window next to the tub that overlooks Witten Pond and a secret garden. There are skylights as well, so while you're soaking in the deep clawfoot tub, you can also light candles and stargaze. The open living room/kitchen has a wood burning stream-stone fireplace and country kitchen with bluestone counters. See Amenities for details, although almost everything you would want is provided. All the appliances are new.
The porch is covered on three sides, allowing for more relaxation and stargazing at night since there is no ambient light! The stars are bright and huge.
The Sitting area in the back of the house has a wood burning Tuscan wood grill, teak sitting benches, gardens, and picnic table overlooking Witten Pond. Supervised, it is a great area for a young child to play. Swimming (at guest risk) and fishing (catch-and-release) are available in Witten Pond. The Wittenberg Stream, a classic trout stream, is just across the road parallel to our property.
Lily amenities include Wifi internet, DVD/TV, CD/radio, massage table, and excellent cell service. Again, please see Amenities for more details.
ALL WITHIN A 15 - 20 MINUTE DRIVE.
My boyfriend and I live in the NYC and enjoy a chance to get out of the density once in a while. We have taken to long weekends in the Catskills due to its proximity and the abundance of great walks, culture, food and people. We've stayed gorgeous homes in Kingston and in Woodstock but absolutely fell in love with Lily of the Valley in West Shokan. The pictures and description accurately represent the property but still do not do it justice. The house is set on Witten Pond which is a extra special feature. We loved exploring the immediate area around the house, admiring the attention to detail Charlotte and the owners have given the area. There are beautiful benches, Buddhas, sculptures, bird houses, and other accents around the property. The house is a labor of love I also can't do justice. Every feature, piece of furniture and decoration in the house was had chosen and intentionally placed. The house feels like a real home that must have taken many years to decorate so thoroughly, consistently and beautifully. I have never stayed in such a cozy and relaxing rental home ever. The kitchen is fully stocked. We prepared a homemade bolognese, popped the cork on the complimentary bottle of red wine (which was very good!) and sat by the fire marveling at what a find we had come upon. The bathroom and bathtub are lovely (I enjoyed the premium soaps and herbal tonics and took soak). Upstairs you are transported to a spacious hideaway with breathtaking views. The bedroom looks like the ideal place to write a novel -- it is warm, has gorgeous rugs and hand-picked furniture, a well curated library and beautiful artwork from stained glass windows to photography to sketches of birds. The skylights are incredible and elevate the room even more. The bed is large and comfortable with quality pillows. For a couple I cannot recommend this property enough.
If it is helpful, I'll share the activities we enjoyed. We skied Belleayre located 30 minutes away door to door. It's both smaller than Hunter Mountain and has great lower mountain trails which we both wanted (being the inexperienced skier and snowboarder that we are). We also went hiking on a little known trail accessible from Matyas Road just off of Route 28 about 1.5 miles south of Bellayre Mountain in Shandanken Reserve. It's about a 3-hour hike and totally worth it. We've vowed to come back and hike this trail again, dinner at Peekamoose (fine dining) and loved it.
We could not have imagined a better place to spend a late summer getaway. The house, the pond, the location - absolute perfection. Mornings having coffee on the porch, looking out on the pond and the mountains. Evenings sitting around the fire. Sleeping soundly and watching light break over the mountains from the comfortable bed. It will reamin one of my favorite places. Perfect for the dog - kept him on leash around the property. He seemed to like the break as well (though he did stay on full alert for intruders and any unknown critters!!!) The fact that the interior is authentic and true to the early 20th century age of the house was a plus to us. Truly felt like a step back into an earlier, simpler time of Catskill hunting camps -- with great wifi! When we couldn't figure out the internet TV, Eric was quick to come help and resolve the issue. I have to add that soaking in the old-fashioned tub, looking out on the woods and pond was a therapeutic experience. So happy we found the place.
My wife and I really enjoyed our recent long weekend stay at Lily of the Valley. The cottage was charming, the grounds and the setting in the Catskills were just beautiful. One of the many highlights was the outdoor fireplace at the base of a steep mountain which is directly behind the house. We spent each night with a roaring fire while looking at the amazing number of stars. We would highly recommend this property for a quiet , relaxing and memorable romantic getaway!
We arrived on a Friday night to a torrential downpour which put a little damper to the start of our weekend. That little damper disappeared the moment we walked through the door to the Barn. With slippers laid out for you at the foot of the stairs, and lights on so you can see, our little damper turned to a feeling of complete relaxation. After unpacking, we decided to utilize the incredible bathtub Spa. It was just beautiful- natural stone with a steam component was perfect for a rain filled, windy evening. Being 6'3" and 235 i was worried i wouldn't have any room in the tub to unwind. Not to worry- i could have swam laps! It was perfect!
The upstairs bedroom was so spacious and designed to perfection- the bed was extremely comfortable and the reclining leather chairs in front of the fireplace were the perfect touch to sit back and relax, read, and think about nothing.
The kitchen and Living room had everything we could have wanted- top notch appliances for cooking... we love to cook and a huge Fireplace with a brick oven above it. We didn't get a chance to use it this time- but next time we will!
If you are looking for a place to get away in beautiful surroundings and really decompress from the world for a few days- there is no better place to do it than "the barn!"
We had a fantastic time staying at Lily of the Valley! The place is gorgeous and impeccably maintained. I would absolutely recommend this home to any couple looking to get away and relax for a long weekend.
Julianne and I searched for a home to rent in the Catskills with the idea that our dog could have a pond to swim in. We did not find anything suitable on AIRbnb and turned to HomeAway. We are happy we did. Even though our dog did not swim in the pond (we could not find a graduated beachhead entry point for him - he is an old pooch) we were delighted by the romantic and bucolic setting of the Lily in the Valley. The entire Witten Pond compound is an oasis in the woods. Set between two mountains, we savored our evenings on the porch, watching the stars on the darkest nights and later in the week, basking in the silver glow of the Harvest Moon. The 2nd floor bedroom was a special treat. With its loft-like ceilings, extra large skylights and windows, we fell asleep to the soothing sounds of the forest. Unlike many houses for rent on these rental sites, this home has character and old charm. It is furnished with an eye for detail. The old-school claw foot tub in the bathroom served as a perfect bath at the of the day. Be warned there is no stand-up shower. I was worried about this before arriving, but the accommodations of the bathroom quickly erased any misgivings. Taking a bath with moonlight lighting the room is a treat I do not get at home.
The couch downstairs opens up into sleeper bed if you have more than two people staying. For a couple this home is just about perfect. Julianne and I will be back.
We arrived at Lily of the Valley for a 3-night 4-day stay with our two dogs. It was absolutely perfect! Everything we were looking for. The property was very quiet and relaxing. Tons of trails to take the dogs, a stream right across from the house that the dogs adored! The pond was great for fishing. It was the most welcoming stay we've ever had anywhere. They really take the time to put a personal touch on the rental. We were surprised with the arrival basket containing a bottle of wine (which was delicious!), a bottle of sparkling water, and our own to go water bottle that my boyfriend uses every day! Our dogs are named Chewbacca (Chewy) and Obi (Obi Wan) and the property manage Eric was awesome enough to bring us three glasses of his own personal Star Wars collection to use during our stay! We didn't even have to leave the house much! We will definitely be coming back and bringing our families for the other two houses on the property!

Our homes are filled with antiques, rustic luxury, and contemporary elegance, depending on the home you rent. They welcome couples with a pet(s) and/or small children. Our homes are not suitable for "groups" of couples seeking party weekends. Sorry.
Witten Pond consists of 3 magnificent residences: Lily-of-the-Valley, The Gatehouse, Witten Barn ... all available for rental.
