About the Property

7 Bedrooms, 6 +1/2 Bathrooms Sleeps 14

Villa Lavanda is a completely reconstructed - mostly 18th century villa above the Tuscan village of Bagni di Lucca - 35 minutes from the incredible walled city of Lucca.

The house - with its 13m pool, hot-tub, pizza ovens, bocce is surrounded by olive groves and fields of lavender and is furnished with antiques, contemporary, traditional & ethnic art and is used by the owners as a principal residence. Daily housekeeping is included in the rental. There is a library of books, satellite TV and internet service, free international calling (land-line, multiple music systems, a gourmet kitchen with all appliances.

The house looks out over Tuscan hill-towns, protected chestnut forests and the Serchio valley. It is 5 minutes - by car - from the town ---- which has shops of all types, supermarkets, and an emergency medical service.

The villa is 90 minutes from the treasures of Florence, and the cliff villages of the Cinque Terre. Pisa - and its airport - is 50 minutes away. Carrara with its marble quarries (used by Michelangelo), Rapallo, Santa Margherita,Forte di Marmi and the Tuscan riviera are all close by. Bagni di Lucca is at the start of the Garfagnana valley - renowned in Italy as a center of production for artisanal foods --- ham, sausage, cheese, chestnut flour, porcini are just some of the delights.

The area is also particularly known for its hilltop villages and churches, along with the multitude of outdoor activities --- hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, river rafting, paragliding, just some of the many that are available. The provincial capital of Lucca (40 minutes) is a gem with its walls, beautifully preserved buildings and churches, villas with classic gardens, elegant shopping, and many cultural activities from opera (it's the home town of Puccini), to music festivals, a summer rock festival, photography and food fairs and exhibitions among the many attractions.

Without the seasonal crowds of Florence its a place to enjoy and experience real life in an Italian town --- while still being able to explore and enjoy Renaissance art & architecture.

The area is renowned for the production of artisanal food and as an outdoor recreational area - particularly for hiking, walking, paragliding, and numerous other outdoor activities. The beginning of the Garfagnana Valley, with numerous famous hill-towns and villages --- which produces some of the best sausage, cheese, wild boar prosciutto, chestnut flour baked goods, honey and other local specialties is just minutes from the villa. Bagni di Lucca is close to the marble quarries of Carrara and the villages of the Cinque Terre. Florence with its art treasures can be reached within 90 minutes. Lucca itself is a unique walled town - essentially closed to traffic - with wonderful architecture, lovely shops and restaurants. One can walk - or bicycle - around the walls, visit Romanesque churches and museums. Surrounding the town are wineries and classic villas and gardens many of which may be visited. Pisa - with its leaning tower is one hour away. The towns of the Cinque Terre - visited by walking along the cliffs or a dedicated small railway must be experienced and the fashionable beaches and restaurants of Forte di Marmi are easily accesible. The marble quarries of Carrara are also well worth a visit. The area is a particularly un-spoilt, traditional part of Tuscany; hunting wild-boar (in season) still occurs in the woods, along with harvesting porcini and chestnuts. It's Tuscany before the advent of mass tourism and agribusiness.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1989

About the owner: After many years of searching,we bought the property - with the house as a ruin - and spent two years undertaking a complete renovation. because this is a home to our family, we have continued to upgrade and update both the interior and mechanical features. As we split our time between the US and Italy, the villa is our home and is not furnished as a rental property. It contains a portion of our contemporary & ethnic art collection, antiques and carpets, as well as large library, music, DVD and CD collection.

Why the Owner Chose Bagni di Lucca, Lucca, Italy:
The villa has a special sense of peace and privacy with an ideal climate and environment. The grounds are extensively planted with olive groves & terraces of lavender, while the courtyards have pots of azaleas, gardenias & lemons. The quality of both the air and water is extraordinary, and in the warm months, the days are hot and sunny, while nights are generally cool and comfortable. In the 18th C Bagni di Lucca was the favored summer spa resort for British and Russian nobility because of the cooler, comfortable nights. The area is known for the variety and quality of the outdoor activities & artisanal foods and our local manager can arrange for cookery & Italian classes, wine tours, and recreational trips. The villa is a 5 minute drive from the local town, & only 28 Km from the extraordinary city of Lucca with its walls, wineries, classic villas & gardens; the Cinque Terre & the seaside resort of Forte di Marmi are all easily accessible. Florence, Pisa & the Chianti can be visited as day trips. Besides the decor, the villa equipped to provide every convenience -- wireless internet service; telephone, fax, printer/scanner a laptop etc. Hairdryers in all bathrooms. The property is gated and completely secure with staff living nearby.

The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
The villa offers a unique sense of privacy and peace both outside - and in. The panoramic views from both the house and grounds are unique. In particular, the giant window in the living room - kept open all Summer - looks out and over hill-towns and the Garfagnana valley & opens the living room to the views and soft breezes. The layout of the villa is such as to allow smaller groups to feel just as comfortable and relaxed as when it is filled with guests, while the various indoor & outdoor seating areas means that guests can always find a private spot to read or relax. No traffic disturbs the tranquility - and the lavender terraces perfume the grounds. CONCIERGE SERVICE: a full service is available: Our local manager is able to arrange all aspects of your stay from hiring a variety of expert local chefs & providing additional staffing, tour guides & drivers; arranging visits to local wineries, artisanal food producers & local craftspeople --- or arranging for Italian, cooking & art lessons, rafting trips & many other recreational activities. The manager is on call for questions or emergencies. The villa is furnished as a family home with large, and eclectic, collections of contemporary and ethnic art; antique furniture and oriental rugs, along with a library and collection of European, American & children’s films, books and games. We produce our own olive oil, honey and our large organic orto, (vegetable garden) is available to guests during Summer months. Pizzas may be baked in the 18th century outdoor oven -- and eaten at one of the several outdoor dining areas - and the layout of the house provides for 3 of the smaller bedrooms - along with a large living room and 21/2 bathrooms - to be relatively separate from the main living ares; making it particularly suited for families with children to have their own bedrooms and living & play areas, with separate entrances to this area, the courtyard (with ping-pong table) and gardens.
