Relax in a two-bedroom, two-bath house with a large ocean view lanai. Our house is on a quiet street that runs along the ocean and has two parks within easy walking distance on the coast. You will find there are more walkers than cars passing below our lanai. We are an easy one hour drive to the volcano. There aren't that many live volcanoes in the world, and how many of them can you actually walk around on?

You are close to many places worth exploring. Hilo has old-Hawaii storefronts, a farmers\flea market, and cultural events (such as the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and the Big Island Hawaiian Music Festival). And Pahoa with its mix of Cowboy and Victorian character with wooden sidewalks is close by and has some of the best small restaurants in East Hawaii. There is much more to see and explore in Eastern Hawaii — or you can just sit on the lanai, listen to the waves, and watch for whales.

Why Michael Zimmerman chose Keaau

Before we bought this home we had stayed in many vacation rentals on the Islands so when we set ours up we knew what distinguished one from another. Our home is different from many in how little traffic you will see. It is not unusual to be sitting on the lanai on a lazy Saturday afternoon gazing at the ocean and not see any cars for an hour.

The windows throughout the house provides an ocean view from nearly every room in the house.

We had a great time on our 3 week stay. You have made some good improvements since our first stay. We went to the volcano and saw bubbling lava from the visitor center. That was exciting! I want to share with you a couple of restaurants that we really liked. Pele's Kitchen in Pahoa town was surprisingly good. They are only open for breakfast. We had some great huevos rancheros. Also Mighty Sushi near Malalama market is the only sushi in the Pahoa area and it's actually quite good. The service can be very slow, but you can call in your order ahead. An out of the way place in Hilo is Kim Yo's, a Korean deli. They have a great vegetarian sushi and delicious bento boxes among other things. The address is 399 Kawilli Street, just off the main highway. Aloha and Mahalo! (April - May 2017 - 20 days)

This was our 6th visit to Hilo but our first VRBO experience. I am pleased to report that staying in this lovely, well-supplied home was a wonderful experience. Large rooms. Just bring your toiletries and clothes and you’ll be set. We will not stay in another hotel!

I appreciate the owners sending information related to Hilo- things to do, places to see. Communication was outstanding.

We felt like we had a very authentic island experience! Thank you for sharing your home with us.

This was our 3rd year staying at this wonderful Hawaiian rental, so obviously we like it here! Although the east side of the Big Island is known to have rainy days, this year it was a bit wetter than normal. However, the lanai is so large and comfortable that we were still able to sit outside without getting wet. And that's what we enjoy.....relaxing without a care in the world!

The whole house is set up for guest comfort: comfortable furniture, a well furnished kitchen (we cook almost all meals at home), good beds, etc. When we arrive the house is very clean .

Michael and Terry are very responsive to all of our requests and needs, although we must admit there isn't much for them to respond to because they've tried to foresee and provide anything guests might need to make the stay trouble free. Mahalo for another great visit!

Best Location, Beautiful Ocean View

Very comfortable, clean home directly across the street from the ocean. It has everything you need for a great vacation including comfy beds and a well equipped kitchen. On our recent stay, we had every kind of weather imaginable and had no power or internet outages which was wonderful.

The owners are great to work with and make the whole process very is without doubt, the best value in the area!

Great place but oppressive house rules

I'm going to be honest here: The place is very nice—spacious, comfortable, close to some beautiful laval cliffs, with a nice ocean view. But we felt the house rules were oppressive and made the stay a lot of work. Here were the two that really stood out:

-You can't leave out dirty dishes or any crumbs at all, and you can't put food waste in the garbage. You either have to leave your trash in the fridge or take it immediately out to the trash cans that are outside and downstairs. I understand that bugs can be a problem, but it meant even a snack required an extra level of cleaning and awareness.

-You can't roll your wheeled suitcases on the floor, which means as soon as you open the front door, you'll need to carry your suitcases to the bedrooms, etc. Again, while I do understand that they have beautiful wooden floors, having to shlep your 50-pound suitcases around is a pain.

Great place

We completely enjoyed our stay. The house is beautiful . It is very clean and comfortable. The waterfront across the road is beautiful and very fun to watch from the lanai. The location is great. It really isn’t that far to Hilo and other points of interest. The neighborhood is very pleasant and quiet. We highly recommend this home.

Great place. Great location. Comfortable stay.

We stayed here for 6 nights and we had a lovely time overall. The property was clean, soft comfortable beddings, fully equipped kitchen and laundry. Waking up to the view of the ocean was pleasing every morning. Thank you!

Car: necessary

Our lovely spacious home is located in the Puna district of the Big Island. A short auto trip to the south takes you to the Kapoho Tide Pools, the large, free ocean front hot pool in Ahalanui Park, and through a lovely area that includes Lava Trees State Park. A day trip to the volcano (one hour away) can easily be done without facing any city traffic.

East Hawai'i is a fascinating place to visit. It provides a lush landscape, incredible geological sights (a big mahalo to Pele), a wide variety of activities, and a place to rest and rejuvenate. There aren't that many live volcanoes in the world and how many of them can you actually walk around on? In the area are many small farms producing plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits throughout the year. Visiting the various flea\farmers markets can be quite rewarding - just wait until you see the avocadoes - always ripe and the size of a large fist - yum. Papayas too, at 3 for a dollar. Enjoy your stay and when you return home, please feel free to pack and take with you all of the Aloha you can carry.
