Spacious and Lovely Ocean View Home South of Hilo

Bedrooms 2
Space 2,100 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Relax in a two-bedroom, two-bath house with a large ocean view lanai. Our house is on a quiet street that runs along the ocean and has two parks within easy walking distance on the coast. You will find there are more walkers than cars passing below our lanai. We are an easy one hour drive to the volcano. There aren't that many live volcanoes in the world, and how many of them can you actually walk around on?

You are close to many places worth exploring. Hilo has old-Hawaii storefronts, a farmers\flea market, and cultural events (such as the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and the Big Island Hawaiian Music Festival). And Pahoa with its mix of Cowboy and Victorian character with wooden sidewalks is close by and has some of the best small restaurants in East Hawaii. There is much more to see and explore in Eastern Hawaii — or you can just sit on the lanai, listen to the waves, and watch for whales.

About Michael Zimmerman

We area recently retired couple hoping to move to our Hawaii home some day. Until we do so we are letting others make use of our home for their vacation. We take much pride in making our home a very comfortable place with all the amenities you could need. But you do not have to take our word alone - you can read the comments in this listing from the many renters who have stayed in our home.

Michael Zimmerman purchased this house in 2009

Why Michael Zimmerman chose Keaau

Before we bought this home we had stayed in many vacation rentals on the Islands so when we set ours up we knew what distinguished one from another. Our home is different from many in how little traffic you will see. It is not unusual to be sitting on the lanai on a lazy Saturday afternoon gazing at the ocean and not see any cars for an hour.

What makes this house unique

The windows throughout the house provides an ocean view from nearly every room in the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time on our 3 week stay. You have made some good improvements since our first stay. We went to the volcano and saw bubbling lava from the visitor center. That was exciting! I want to share with you a couple of restaurants that we really liked. Pele's Kitchen in Pahoa town was surprisingly good. They are only open for breakfast. We had some great huevos rancheros. Also Mighty Sushi near Malalama market is the only sushi in the Pahoa area and it's actually quite good. The service can be very slow, but you can call in your order ahead. An out of the way place in Hilo is Kim Yo's, a Korean deli. They have a great vegetarian sushi and delicious bento boxes among other things. The address is 399 Kawilli Street, just off the main highway. Aloha and Mahalo! (April - May 2017 - 20 days)

Thank you for allowing us to stay at your home near Hilo!! The house was beautiful, quiet, and so near the ocean to see the sunrise each morning from the porch. We have some amazing photos!

One neighbor came by to ensure we went to the end of the street to walk the shores and see the sea turtles come in to feed. This was another unexpected highlight of our trip. Thank you for the opportunity to stay at your home.

Can't be Beat!

  • 5 of 5

This is the most amazing property and we were so lucky to find it. Located in Hawaiian Paradise Park (or HPP as the locals call it), the house is in the perfect location in a quiet neighborhood. It is spacious and is directly across the street from the ocean. Both bedrooms were well furnished and the beds very comfortable. Everything you could want is also provided in the kitchen.

Like many homes, there is no air conditioning, but with the ceiling fans, open windows and ocean breezes, you won't miss it. The frogs and birds will lull you to sleep as will the gentle rain in the evening.

Grocery stores are convenient and well stocked. I love that I could get fresh poke in so many varieties right there. (I will probably go into poke withdrawal back home. It's hard to get fresh tuna on the East Coast.) Just wish Boogie Woogie Pizza had delivery (and spaghetti) on Thursday nights. However, the trip into Pahoa to pick up the pizza was fine.

We spent much of our down time on the lanai drinking coffee in the morning and wine in the evenings while watching the waves. We were lucky enough to spot sea turtles and dolphins during our stay. We even saw the Maku'u man petroglyph in the lava cliff across the street.

The short drive into Hilo allowed us to do as little or as much as we wanted. It was fun watching the neighbors walk by with their dogs. They are friendly and either waved or spoke as they passed.

One of the most helpful things was all the information on the house and the area. The Zimmermans have gone the extra mile to provide this. It made our stay much more comfortable and we knew what we needed to do to take care of their home.

Our group of four cannot praise this Home Away enough. We would come back again in a heartbeat and see why so many folks return to this ocean paradise.

Mahalo nut, nui, Micheal and Terri for sharing with us.

Relaxing Big Island Home

  • 5 of 5

One last deep breath of that beautiful ocean from the lanai! Close to all the activities on the Hilo side, this house offered all the comforts. Nice beds, well stocked, large kitchen, lots of books and beautiful location. Don't miss the quasi sunset out on the cliff for family photos. Oh, and the freshest pineapples growing under the kitchen window. Michael and Terry were great landlords too, lots of tips and the house was very clean. Mahalo until next time!

A truly wonderful home to rent!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have rented this home, We loved it the first time and this time. It was just as we remembered it, wonderful. The home is right across a dirt road from the Ocean, it is well furnished, very comfortable, has a large very functional kitchen. It has a wonderful big covered lanai. We love the Puna area, so its close to snorkeling, farmers markets, the Volcano's, fishing and general sight seeing!

Superb vacation rental in a gorgeous location!

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed in many vacation rentals in Hawaii and this is by far my favorite! The location is great if you’re a nature lover and like to feel like you actually live in the places you visit.

The ocean is visible from the large lanai and it’s just a short walk across the street if you want a closer view. We saw whales most days we were there! Both ends of the road have beautiful shorefronts to walk along and enjoy. The waves were fairly big while we were there and you can hear the ocean from the bedroom. It’s very easy and quick to get into Hilo to do town things and a great location for exploring the Hilo side of the island. We loved going to the tidepools in Kapoho, Uncle Robert’s Kava bar and market, Maku’u market, Volcano, and Hilo town. I prefer the Hilo side, but we did take a day trip to the Kona side as well… long day, but do-able.

The house itself is very comfortable, livable and quite beautiful. The floor plan is open with lots of windows to let in the sun. We prefer cooking to eating out for most dinners, and the kitchen is extremely well stocked with everything you need - this is rare for a vacation rental. There were even some useful items in the fridge and cabinets that were left behind by others. Paper goods and cleaning items, such as soap, TP, paper towels, laundry soap, etc. were there when we arrived and we only had to get things after we’d been there a while.

Michael is great to work with. He provided detailed instructions for the house as well as excellent tips for exploring the island. I really can’t say enough about this vacation rental — I will definitely be back!

Our lovely spacious home is located in the Puna district of the Big Island. A short auto trip to the south takes you to the Kapoho Tide Pools, the large, free ocean front hot pool in Ahalanui Park, and through a lovely area that includes Lava Trees State Park. A day trip to the volcano (one hour away) can easily be done without facing any city traffic.

East Hawai'i is a fascinating place to visit. It provides a lush landscape, incredible geological sights (a big mahalo to Pele), a wide variety of activities, and a place to rest and rejuvenate. There aren't that many live volcanoes in the world and how many of them can you actually walk around on? In the area are many small farms producing plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits throughout the year. Visiting the various flea\farmers markets can be quite rewarding - just wait until you see the avocadoes - always ripe and the size of a large fist - yum. Papayas too, at 3 for a dollar. Enjoy your stay and when you return home, please feel free to pack and take with you all of the Aloha you can carry.
