Ocean Bay Solitude with Sunsets

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

The house sits on a hillside surrounded by 14 acres of land (woods, meadows, lawn around house) with no neighbors in view. A meadow slopes down from the house about 200 feet to the bay, in which you will see a variety of water birds and over which the sun sets. Enjoy morning coffee on the sun porch, eat at the table on the deck, sit on the shoreside bench and watch the changing colors of the water plus the occasional lobster boat. Taunton Bay's tidal waters are relatively shallow in our cove (mean depth 3') and thus warmer than the ocean. Children will enjoy climbing on the rocks and playing on the cobble beach and in the calm water. Beyond the cove the bay affords good kayaking or canoeing, with seal haul-out rocks, a deep channel heading seaward, and reversing rapids at Tidal Falls park in Hancock.

A large, fully- equipped kitchen has sliding glass doors to a three-season sunporch; sliding screen doors lead from the porch to the main deck. The living room has a gas-burning fireplace, flat-panel TV, futon couch and rocking chair. The dining area has a table and six chairs; a card table can expand the seating or be used for puzzles and games. Sliding screen doors from the dining area also open to the main deck.

There are three bedrooms: 1) a master suite with screened windows on three sides, a queen-size bed, double sinks, a walk-in shower, ceiling fan, and a walk-in closet with dresser; 2) a bedroom with a double bed; 3) one with two twin beds--both these bedrooms have built-in storage. There is also a futon in the living room and a roll-away bed for sleeping flexibility. The main bathroom has a tub with glass shower doors and includes a laundry area.

A small deck with bench-rail outside the master suite is reached through the back door.

You will find books, including dictionaries, novels, guides to the birds, flowers, trees, and other natural and historical attractions of the area, children's books and games, and some art supplies.

Activities: Bar Harbor offers sightseeing and whale-watching boat trips, art galleries, and a fine museum of native American culture. Acadia National Park has many hiking and biking trails (cross-country skiing in winter) and magnificent views. It also has an ocean beach and a nice family beach at Echo Lake. Don’t forget to visit the Schoodic Point branch, which is uncrowded even in summer. Kayak rentals are available near the house. The area has many picturesque small towns, ranging from Machias in the east to Blue Hill and Castine in the west to towns on Mount Desert Island. Ellsworth offers movie theaters, restaurants, and shopping. In summer, the usual activities include golf, mini-golf, water slide. Unusual activities include a lumberjack show and a chainsaw artist show.

Food: The area has many fine restaurants, ranging from gourmet elegance to fried clams and lobsters. For shopping, Ellsworth has supermarkets, gourmet shops, wine. The road to Mount Desert Island has several lobster pounds. Local organic meats and produce are available.

Other shopping: Ellsworth has bookstores new and used, boutiques and antiques.

About The Owner

My husband and I grew up in New York and Connecticut, but our academic careers (we are both music historians) took us to the Midwest. Our children both went to college in New England, and as soon as the younger one graduated (from Bates College in Maine), we bought this second home, hoping it would be our retirement home. Now retired, we are torn between grandchildren in the Midwest and Canada, so we haven't moved to Maine, but we come several times a year to enjoy life 'the way life should be.' Our grandson and granddaughter visit often, which is why you will find toys and games, children's books, and art materials in our house, along with all the kitchen and dining equipment necessary to entertain our family and our friends, both local and from away.

The Owner purchased this house in 1998

Why The Owner chose Acadia

We were introduced to the area by friends who had retired here, and we were delighted with the community. There are wonderful dining-out opportunities in the area. We can hike, ski, snowshoe, or swim in Acadia National Park, take a sightseeing trip on a sailboat or lobster boat. There are used bookstores, antiques shops, art galleries and craft shops, and an L. L. Bean outlet. There are various musical events ranging from bluegrass to Beethoven. We can drive to the quaint town of St. Andrews, Canada, for lunch and be home by dinner time--remember to bring your passports!. We have mountains, oceans, lakes, forests, bogs, and gardens to explore. In the winter we can cross-country ski from our door.

What makes this house unique

We never tire of watching the changing light on the water of Taunton Bay, from our morning coffee to sunset, whenever it comes. Summer or winter, we can watch the bay from the dining area, the sun porch, or the master suite (even from its shower!) Sighting a bald eagle flying over our property is a thrill that happens almost every time we visit. Our cobble beach provides access to the bay's shallow, calm water in summer or its fantastic ice formations in winter. At very low tides we have harvested mussels for lunch.

Very comfortable, charming house

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this cottage. The house is charming, lots of character, and has all the amenities. The house is very comfortable, well-stocked, and maintained. Beautiful sunsets over Taunton Bay, very close to Acadia Park, we went hiking every day, took a deep sea fishing boating trip, enjoyed Bar Harbor and shopping at a cute little nearby town Ellsworth. Both my young children and my senior parents, who joined us on this family vacation, loved this place. Children loved playing on the rocks, grandparents enjoyed their coffee and books on the deck.

Homebase near Acadia

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for a week in early August as a base for touring Acadia. The house looks like it does in the pictures. The master bedroom and bathroom are relatively newly remodeled and are very nice and have a modern feel. The architecture is such that each room has a view of the water out one of the side windows. The kitchen was very well equipped and the appliances, while some were a bit dated, were all functional. It's always a plus to have 2 bathrooms when we travel as well as a washer and dryer. I was not able to locate a hair dryer at the house; perhaps my error in assuming one would be there or I overlooked it.

The Wi-Fi was not working when we arrived on Saturday but was fixed on Tuesday once we were able to reach the owner who contacted the service provider. The tech came out and fixed something outside. I was a bit frustrated as I think perhaps the caretaker knew about the issue but left us no note so we wasted a fair amount of time trying to figure out why we couldn't connect. Again, the owner was responsive to our needs, but the caretaker up in Maine was not as communicative as I would have liked. I run a small business and we had an abrupt change of plans when my husband injured his knee and we were unable to hike and kayak as we'd planned so access to the internet was both needed on a professional level and desired for searching for alternative activities in the area. It all worked out okay once the service was up and running which was fairly early in our trip and the owner did apologize.

Cell phone service on Verizon was extremely spotty. AT&T was slightly better for placing calls but neither worked well for internet. There were many areas in the nearby vicinity with no service at all.

We did our shopping primarily at the Walmart in Ellsworth which had a full grocery store as well. We would buy seafood from one of the lobster pounds.

This location was about 45 min from Bar Harbor and much shorter to Schoodic. We also drove up to Campobello Park in Canada which took us about 2 hours.

It was very quiet, easy to find, and the water view was lovely. It was fun to go down to the little deck overlooking the water and see the various tide levels. I would definitely recommend mosquito spray though.

Overall, if you are looking for a vacation home that's a bit off the beaten track (we hate to be in tourist and t shop land), and are willing to drive a bit then this is a nice place from which to base your Acadia tours.

Peace and paradise

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week. This cottage is absolutely perfect. The location, decor, activities and the building design... Everything is very well arrange. Acadia park is right around the corner and the small town of Ellsworth is very nice with a lot of boutique / small stores. This place and this cottage must be recommended.

Idyllic vacation spot, far from the crowds

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 4 year old daughter and I spent 5 great nights at the Brauners' place. It was a delight. We've rented from VRBO 7 or 8 times, and this place adds to our very good streak of rentals. Immaculately clean, great setting, nice views, peaceful. It was far removed from the heat back home. The Brauners give really good advice in their communications like grocery shopping, restaurants, things to do, etc. We did a lot of the things they listed and acted on tips from other travelers who have written in the guest book. If you are using this as a launching place for Mt. Desert Island, be aware that it's a bit of a hike to the island. However, you should go to the Schoodic Peninsula, which is an easy drive from the house and amazing. I would certainly go back again.

Incredible experience in Downeast Maine

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful house situated in the middle of a 14 acre wooded property. The house in itself is one of a kind with lots of glass windows and high ceilings that give it a very contemporary look and feel. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and appliances that made cooking a breeze. There was an eclectic collection of books and games that served us well on rainy days. This place is about 40 minutes to the main attractions in Acadia National Park. But there are few Maine gems that are closer (like the Schoodic Peninsula and Dunnel's pond). It is well equipped with Modern amenities and would work for couples as well as young families. The caretaker was accessible though we did not need his services.

This house is exceptional. For months, I looked at the pictures and imagine the upcoming holidays and the reality was even better! The house is well maintained and the kitchen is very well equipped for cooking good meals, especially lobsters. The owner had given us all the information we need. Many guides and maps are also found in the house. We were a family and everyone enjoyed our stay (just one week, too short!). I recommend renting this house, but I hope to return one day.
