Wonderful Vacation Spot For Small Family, Or Quiet Retreat For Writer/scholar.
This beautiful hilltop cottage in upstate New York is the perfect vacation spot for a small family, or a quiet retreat for a writer or scholar. Located near the Finger Lakes, it is less than four hours from New York City, and only 40 minutes from the spectacular gorges and vibrant cultural attractions of Ithaca. The immediate vicinity offers river sports (kayaking and canoeing), skiing, snowshoeing, country rambles out the front door, hiking and biking, and antiquing. Ithaca's superb restaurants, cinema, bookstores, gourmet groceries, libraries, live theater and museum are close at hand, and the Finger Lakes wineries and Corning Museum of Glass are an easy day trip. Syracuse, an hour north, offers a fine regional theatre and burgeoning art scene. Parents of college students attending SUNY Binghamton, Ithaca College and Cornell will find this a convenient rendezvous spot to spend down time with their kids during breaks or at graduation. For those who need a peaceful getaway and time to think and work, it offers seclusion in a lovely, natural setting. The quiet of the days is broken only by the sound of peepers in the spring, birds in the summer and crickets in the fall. On clear nights the stars are truly spectacular.
The house in tastefully furnished by its artist owner. It has one bedroom and a sleeping porch, one bath, a full kitchen with a fine, vintage Chambers cook stove, a Vermont Casting wood stove in the living room, a dishwasher, washer/dryer,
and dish TV. It is situated on thirty acres of open field and woods, with a small pond big enough for swimming and a half mile mowed path through the meadow.
The house is smoke free, maximum occupancy four people, children welcome but pets are not. One week minimum.
I am an artist/photographer, and have lived here for the last 30 years. I teach at Colgate University and am getting ready to retire. This is the spot where my three children and seven grandchildren love to gather once a year in August, for a beautiful family reunion. Now I want to share it with others who love the peace and beauty of rural New York state.
Linn Underhill purchased this cottage in 1980
I was first attracted to the long view out the north window, the open field and the woods. Its location, within striking distance of Ithaca, Binghamton and Syracuse, means that social, cultural and practical attractions are close at hand. I now live in my studio, built in 2003, so the house is available for guests year-round -- cool in the summer and cozy in the winter.
Wonderful place to spend a birthday! Thanks for letting us use your comfortable cottage.
I am a writer and college professor. I booked Linn's place for four days between two trips for work. I envisioned a real writer's retreat: a place where I could hole up for several days by myself and get some good writing done. Linn's place offered that and so much more. It was a comfortable place to get away from distractions and focus on work, for sure. But the property also offered plenty of opportunities to set down the work, too: to take meditative walks, look at the stars (wow! the stars!), and have afternoon hangout time on the patio with Linn's friendly cat, Pretty. Linn is an artist with an artist's sensibility and that permeates everything about the cottage and property. I feel lucky to have found her place and I hope to return.
Linn's cottage is lovely; in such a quiet peaceful spot in the country. The house has most everything one could need with a comfortable bedroom and a sleeping porch, well-equipped kitchen and front patio. The pond is a short walk from the house (like 2 minutes) and is a nice secluded spot. Highly recommend!
We were visiting for our son's graduation and stayed at the cottage for four nights. Linn stayed in touch and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. The cottage has an interesting book collection, games, music, comfy beds and at night we would fall asleep with the sound of crickets and frogs. With that said be prepared to stock up on food and other needs, it's not a short hop to the local store but that is what makes it so special. Each night we looked forward to our evenings sitting outside under the stars. It's a lovely place!
I rented the cottage to work on a novel draft. It was a perfect week for me. No traffic or noise, lovely views, a tranquil meadow trail for walking while untangling the narrative knots. Red-winged blackbirds were nesting, the turtles worked on their tans, a pileated woodpecker passed through, and the woods popped with trillium.
All the basic utensils and linens were provided. I simply brought a box of food, settled in with my files and folders, and was able to really focus on my work.
Hope to get an opportunity to come back soon to see Linn and the sweet four-legged entourage!
My husband and I were looking for a winter location in order to do some cross country skiing. Although the weather didn't cooperate, our rental of Linn's Writer's Retreat more than made up for the lack of snow. Set on 30+ acres, we enjoyed the beautiful and tranquil setting. The fireplace added to the coziness and charm. The location close to Ithaca, Cortland and Binghampton afforded plenty activities and restaurants when we felt a need to leave the cottage, although we were quite content to stay in and cook each night on the antique Chambers stove. Linn's library is amazing and being an avid reader I was thankful for the varied selection. The house was clean and comfortable. Linn made us feel right at home. This was just perfect for our needs.
Linn is a kind, dear soul. We hope to have an opportunity to meet again.
Linn was great and helped us with everything we needed. Bedroom in the sunroom full of windows was amazing to see the stars and wake up to the sunrise. Pond nearby excellent for meditation. Gracey the dog is the best. Highly recommend.
This is best if you don't have a lot of expectations of a bustling town. The nearby town is good for basics but very little in terms of character. Nearest cool town is Ithaca which is a about a 45 min. drive.
