Wonderful Vacation Spot For Small Family, Or Quiet Retreat For Writer/scholar.
This beautiful hilltop cottage in upstate New York is the perfect vacation spot for a small family, or a quiet retreat for a writer or scholar. Located near the Finger Lakes, it is less than four hours from New York City, and only 40 minutes from the spectacular gorges and vibrant cultural attractions of Ithaca. The immediate vicinity offers river sports (kayaking and canoeing), skiing, snowshoeing, country rambles out the front door, hiking and biking, and antiquing. Ithaca's superb restaurants, cinema, bookstores, gourmet groceries, libraries, live theater and museum are close at hand, and the Finger Lakes wineries and Corning Museum of Glass are an easy day trip. Syracuse, an hour north, offers a fine regional theatre and burgeoning art scene. Parents of college students attending SUNY Binghamton, Ithaca College and Cornell will find this a convenient rendezvous spot to spend down time with their kids during breaks or at graduation. For those who need a peaceful getaway and time to think and work, it offers seclusion in a lovely, natural setting. The quiet of the days is broken only by the sound of peepers in the spring, birds in the summer and crickets in the fall. On clear nights the stars are truly spectacular.
The house in tastefully furnished by its artist owner. It has one bedroom and a sleeping porch, one bath, a full kitchen with a fine, vintage Chambers cook stove, a Vermont Casting wood stove in the living room, a dishwasher, washer/dryer,
and dish TV. It is situated on thirty acres of open field and woods, with a small pond big enough for swimming and a half mile mowed path through the meadow.
The house is smoke free, maximum occupancy four people, children welcome but pets are not. One week minimum.

About Linn Underhill
I am an artist/photographer, and have lived here for the last 30 years. I teach at Colgate University and am getting ready to retire. This is the spot where my three children and seven grandchildren love to gather once a year in August, for a beautiful family reunion. Now I want to share it with others who love the peace and beauty of rural New York state.
Linn Underhill purchased this Cottage in 1980
Why Linn Underhill chose Marathon
I was first attracted to the long view out the north window, the open field and the woods. Its location, within striking distance of Ithaca, Binghamton and Syracuse, means that social, cultural and practical attractions are close at hand. I now live in my studio, built in 2003, so the house is available for guests year-round -- cool in the summer and cozy in the winter.

Perfect! Just what I was hoping for my month long stay!
I stayed for a month, and I both relaxed inside for solitude and ventured out at times for exploring Marathon, Cortland, and Ithaca. Linn is a gracious host, sensitive to her guests needs and responsive to questions and requests. I felt at home in the cabin immediately. Cozy and nicely but simply furnished and decorated, it has just the right touch for a rustic cabin in the woods. The furniture is not new and some of it is a little worn. If one is looking for modern and new, this won’t fit the bill. But here is what you will find:
1. Good taste in decor that is well maintained
2. A very comfortable bed
3. Good heating system even when it’s freezing outside
4. Good water pressure and temperature that heats up fast
5. A well stocked kitchen and an interesting old fashioned stove that works like new
6. Library of classics and the ambiance of an artist
I was by myself on this trip, but it is set up so that a couple or small family would be comfortable. I plan to return with my family next year.
I wholeheartedly recommend Linn and her cabin!
Exceeded expectations in every possible way.
Everything was just about perfect. The owner was friendly, informative and accommodating. The house was comfortable and pleasant. The kitchen was well equipped and the stove was entertaining. An example of an old appliance that works better than the new ones.
House was clean. Everything worked. Can't think of anything to complain about :)
Oregon Hill has two entrances and one of them is currently (Oct. 2017) under construction (bridge out). Make sure you check your GPS (and preferably Waze) before you get there. If you come to the bridge under construction you only have to follow the detour directions, but it will take you a few additional miles compared to coming the open way.
Wonderful country retreat
We really enjoyed our stay. Home was clean, quiet and very comfortable. Beautiful countryside. Thanks for everything Linn!
Solitude and Simplicity
Linn's place offers a tranquil place to get away from the city and noise, which is just what I did for 6 days. The place is off the beaten path but the drive is lovely with distant views of rolling hills and country roads lined with beautiful blue chicory. I had planned to do a bit more sightseeing, but once there, I found such peace in walking through the meadow and wooded trails, or just sitting by the pond watching the dragonflies flit by, that I spent a good deal of my time there. The cottage was cozy with abundant light and a good-sized kitchen that had everything I needed. Thank you, Linn, for providing such a serene place to reconnect to nature.
A secluded, peaceful location to enjoy special ttime
The writer's retreat was perfect for the 5 days we spent there. Our party was composed of four adults and the house was spacious enough to accommodate us comfortably. The vintage stove worked wonder. The rental is a bit isolated, which was perfect for us but may require some shopping planning if one minds spending a lot of time driving to a decent grocery store. The drive to Ithaca is long --it took us an hour each way-- but again, the house's isolation was a plus for us. The pond is a gem if you don't mind sharing it with lily pad-looking plants and tiny aquatic creatures. The only reason we give the place 4 stars and not 5 concerns the general state of the house. The interior and exterior looked a bit more shabby than they did on the photos here. That said, we would rent it again on a heart beat.
Great for us.
Lovely tranquil spot. Gracious hostess. We had a great time.
