About Richard Ashley

Worldwide traveler and entrepreneur from Hawaii. Lived in Japan since 1995 so we have lots of insider information and contacts and are happy to put in extra effort assist our most esteemed guests in having a most memorable experience in this great country.

Richard Ashley purchased this house in 2000

Why Richard Ashley chose Japan

We used to live in this house and love the experience of living in a local neighborhood in a house rather than a high rise apartment. The house was originally built in 1965 but we completely remodelled it inside and out. new roof, plumbing, wiring, walls, appliances etc.

Have a unique experience by living in a peaceful, safe Japanese neighbourhood yet be only a few minutes from the main JR Yamanote train line and the Tokyo metro. Easy and quick, direct airport access in under 1 hour.

The most reasonable rates at the most convenient location.

This area is where history has been preserved and the modern thrives so you get the best Tokyo has to offer.

What makes this house unique

This location offers it all. The accommodation is a house not an apartment.

We had a great week at Tokhouse. It was wonderful living in the local community and being so close to their everyday life. I think staying in a big hotel would be quite restrictive of ones experience of life in Tokyo. Great amenities in the flat, great food nearby both fresh, take away and local eating places.

Easy access, great location, good facilities

Fantastic stay. Great neighbourhood, good facilities. The children loved the loft bed. The staff picked us up from the station and escorted us to the apartment. Transport is close by and plenty of eating options.

Beautiful spacious house, great owner, comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This house is special. Earlier this month, we went on a 16 day vacation in Japan. We stayed in Tokyo, the mountains near Nagano, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Osaka, and this was our favorite place to stay by far. First, it was easy to reach Richard once we landed in Narita. His emails had given a wealth of information about not only the area, but how to contact him through many different apps (we used Skype). Once we got to Nishi Nippori train station, he met us there and walked us to the property (a true, easy 5 minute walk). He went over the rules. Everything was very clear and easy to follow. It is 3 stories. On the first floor there is a kitchen, washing machine, shower and tub. Unlike one property we stayed at with 3 levels, it is a roomy area and not claustrophobic. My family of 4 had plenty of room to hang out around the table, get on our electronics, and eat breakfast together. There's a big refrigerator/freezer and plenty of dishes, plates and silverware, plus the typical gas cooktop with fan. One really nice feature is that the bathroom is on the second floor up not-too-steep stairs. Three of us slept on the 2nd floor in the big room, and one of us slept on the third floor in the loft. It was so nice not to have to go downstairs in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom! The big sleeping room was the most comfortable night's sleep I got anywhere on our trip! The futon mats were incredibly comfortable, and between the a/c and the fan, it was nice and chilly, perfect for sleeping (which is so important on a long trip 13 hours away from home)! The house is in a safe neighborhood with a nice restaurant very close, plus several convenient stores on the way to the train station. We would buy food there at night to eat for breakfast, like onigiri, tuna maki, small sandwiches and the best hard boiled eggs I have ever had in my life. This place is a perfect to stay when visiting Tokyo.

Convenient, self-contained, handy location

  • 5 of 5

We rented the down stairs apartment at Tokhouse for a little less than 2 weeks. It is situated conveniently near the Nishi-Nippori station on the JR Yamanote line (circle route) & the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda line. The Nishi-Nippori station is also only one station from Nippori station which is a good option for accessing Narita airport via the Keisei Skyliner train.

Part of the reason we chose the accommodation was because of the location in the Yanaka & Ueno region as we were traveling as a family with a 4 yo son & there are many child friendly options in the region, especially at Ueno park. Another reason is that we wanted to try & be away from a hotel setting & see how it was to live in a suburb area & try eating & shopping locally.

On arriving at Nishi-Nippori station we were greeted by the owners of Tokhouse who showed us the easy walk from the train station to the accommodation, gave us a run down on how to operate the facilities, provided handy maps of the local area with locations of facilities you may require or be interested in using & maps of the popular suburbs as well as sugestions of other itineries further afield from Tokyo for day trips.

The apartment had plenty of room for our family of 3 (as long as you get in the mindset of Japan & make use of space & stay organised) & we enjoyed the independence of the self-contained apartment which was well provisioned with large fridge/freezer, washing machine & hanging racks, cooking equipment & AC. There were good instructions on how to use the appliances in English (as we can’t read Japanese) & bedding for four. The apartment is in a non-hotel / touristy area so we enjoyed seeing how people in the region designed their gardens & went about their daily lives as we walked around the area. There are many food options available nearby & these are marked on the maps provided. We enjoyed & would recommend the nearby supermarket & 24h diner for take away bento breakfasts & lunches, they were very convenient.

We enjoyed staying at Tokhouse, were comfortable, found the apartment & local area clean & tidy, the location is very convenient for access to the JR & Metro rail systems to link up with many of the attractions around the Tokyo region.

Twice Blessed to Stay in this Excellent Location

  • 5 of 5

We have been fortunate to stay twice at Tokhouse: our first trip to Japan in October 2016 (Unit 101), and six months later because we enjoyed our first trip so much (Unit 102). Although Unit 102 is smaller, it felt just right for our family of five: 2 adults, 1 teen and 2 small children. In fact, we never used the loft in Unit 101 as we preferred to huddle together tatami style in the cold October autumn nights. For us, Tokhouse is ideal because:

•It is very accessible to the JR Yamanote and the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda lines. Only a few minutes’ walk and we’re at a quiet neighborhood.

•It is a few minutes’ walk to Bus Stop #12 of the Megurin bus which will take you to Asakusa but is also a good way to see the sightseeing attractions around the Yanaka-Ueno area.

•A walking tour is a great way to experience the shitamachi atmosphere of Yanaka, a great contrast to the ultra-modern downtown Tokyo. From Tokhouse, head to Yanaka Ginza and savor the treats sold on the streets, then explore the Asakura Choso Museum and the many temples nearby. Our kids did not mind the long walk as children’s parks and playgrounds abound. We visited the Yanaka Cemetery, enjoyed a stroll heading to the Nezu Shrine and went all the way to the University of Tokyo to see the new Hachiko statue. You can watch the sunset and the night skyline at the Bunkyo Civic Center to cap the walking tour.

•It is a great way to see how ordinary Tokyoites live their everyday life.

Because Richard takes care of even the minutest details, we never needed to bother him at all. Tokhouse will always be our first choice when visiting Tokyo. Arigatou gozaimasu!

Good location, homely apartment, excellent advice

  • 5 of 5

Property: clean, comfortable, well appointed, quiet. Location: easy access to train/subway station; near lovely and interesting areas; supermarket (and therefore ATM) close. Tokhouse people were very helpful, we were met at the station (thank you!) which was great, and their restaurant recommendations were excellent.

Great Owner Great Apartment Great Tokyo Location

  • 5 of 5

Tokhouse is a gorgeous airy apartment it is clean well layed out and well looked after. My teenage son and myself stayed there over the Easter and we had a really nice and relaxing stay.

The apartment is in a fantastic location very central near to supermarkets the JR Line ATMs great local restaurants good shopping and museums. However at night it is so peaceful you forget you are in a busy part of Tokyo.

The bathroom facilities are spotless as is the kitchenette having the washing machine there made life so much easier too.

The upstairs bedroom is very comfortable it can get a little warm but there is a quiet fan or you can open the window, there is good headroom although it is in the eaves. The wifi is excellent by the way a really strong signal. The apartment is compact but doesn't feel claustrophobic at all.

Richard is a great help he owns the apartment and really made us feel welcome and went through the running of the place and had loads of information about sights itineraries etc. He met us from the station which is moments from the apartment this was really good as it took the anxiety out of finding your way tired from the journey. He really let you know that the place was your home from home for the duration of your stay. He had a comprehensive information book about the apartments that we didn't need to contact him for anything further.

My teen is a great fan of Richard he only met him for a couple of hours and thought he was cool funny and kind!

I will definitely book the Tokhouse again it is great value for money great local location sweet clean little street that it is situated on and super clean. Thanks for a great stay Richard I look forward to seeing you again.

I would highly recommend :-)
