Why Richard Ashley chose 8

We used to live in Tokhouse and love the experience of living in a local neighborhood in a house rather than a high rise apartment. The house was originally built in 1965 but we completely remodelled it inside and out. new roof, plumbing, wiring, walls, appliances etc.

Have a unique experience by living in a peaceful, safe Japanese neighbourhood yet be only a few minutes from the main JR Yamanote train line and the Tokyo metro. Easy and quick, direct airport access in under 1 hour.

The most reasonable rates at the most convenient location.

This area is where history has been preserved and the modern thrives so you get the best Tokyo has to offer.

What makes this house unique

This location offers it all. The accommodation is a house not an apartment.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great week at Tokhouse. It was wonderful living in the local community and being so close to their everyday life. I think staying in a big hotel would be quite restrictive of ones experience of life in Tokyo. Great amenities in the flat, great food nearby both fresh, take away and local eating places.

21 Days in Japan

  • 3 of 5

We were looking forward to exploring Tokyo for the last 5 days of our trip through Japan. Tokhouse was a great jumping off point; close to amenities, the JR Yamanote line that connects to the subway and JR Shinkansen and across a main street enter Yanaka Ginza - an quaint area lined with shops, tiny restaurants and bars. Eddie our concierge met us at the train station Nishi-Nappori and escorted us back to Tokhouse. He provided us with maps and information as well as local knowledge of Tokyo and area. He was quick to respond to all of our requests, for which we were grateful. During our travels, we stayed at other vacation rentals and if we were to compare, Tokhouse fell short in terms of upkeep. The house seemed a little run down, the bedding (futon, sheets, blankets) were well used and musty smelling. It didn’t help that we had arrived just before a typhoon so the rain and humidity added to the moist environment. The hand railing was sticky and could use a good clean. Towels were old and thin; some that were clean were a bit smelly. I would recommend replacing towels and bedding with new ones more often. We were only given 1 set of towels for 4 people and Eddie was kind enough to bring us more towels. Unfortunately, there is no place to dry towels (no in-house dryer) especially on rainy days and we were explicitly asked to turn off all electrical/heating elements when we left the house. It would be nice to have a few starter items in the kitchen like paper towels, coffee, creamers and sugar. All the other places we stayed were well stocked in this area making our mornings hassle-free and was certainly appreciated. My recommendation is a “no” but with a few changes to Tokhouse I would consider changing the answer.

A perfect home base for families exploring Tokyo.

  • 5 of 5

Tokhouse is a pleasant, well-kept home. It provides families with ample room to spread out that hotels can't, and the kitchen made it simple for us to maintain a comfortable breakfast routine before a day of new adventures. There's an abundance of grocery stores, convenience stores, and delicious local restaurants within two minutes' walk, and eight minutes is all it takes to get to Nishi-Nippori station -- a stop on the JR Yamanote Line which connects you, sans transfers, to Tokyo's most famous neighborhoods like Harajuku, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Akihabara, and Ueno. Richard, the owner, is communicative and thorough, providing his guests with a wealth of maps and resources. We hope to come back soon!

Great place for a family !

  • 5 of 5

Good value, excellent location!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at Tokhouse for 5 nights and were very pleased. The location of the property is in a quiet neighborhood but you are only a 5 minute walk to the subway/train station where you can take a train to pretty much all the main attractions in Tokyo. We really enjoyed walking around the neighbourhood (Yanaka) near Tokhouse. There are hardly any tourists and it's not as crowded as many other areas in Tokyo. There are quite a few temples we were able to walk around in with no one else around. The Yanaka cemetery and the Yanaka Ginza(market) were also worth walking through. We stayed in suite 201 at Tokhouse. We managed to fit 2 adults and 2 teenagers in the suite fairly comfortably. The suite was clean and has air-conditioning. The bedding was surprisingly comfortable. The suite is equipped with the necessary appliances to make breakfast in the morning. There is a good grocery store near by to get supplies. There are 2 cheap and good Japanese fast food restaurants by the train station with English menus if you are on a budget. The owner of Tokhouse, Richard, was very helpful and easy to deal with. He met us at the train station and gave us some good tips for checking out Tokyo. He also spent time to show us how everything worked in the suite. We would definitely stay at Tokhouse again and would recommend it to our friends.

Good location in Tokyo

  • 5 of 5

I and my family stayed at Tokhouse for a couple of nights and found the apartment to be very clean and comfortable. The apartment is conveniently located near Nishi-Nippori station on the Yamanote ring line, making it very quick and easy to get anywhere in the city via train and subway. Richard, the owner, was helpful and very well organized, making the renting process easy. I would happily stay there again in the future.
