Overview

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)

This elegant apartment is in one of the prettiest towns in Italy. Anghiari is a walled, medieval hill-top town overlooking the Tiber and the Sovara Valleys. Visitors have described entering this apartment as stepping onto a Renaissance stage. The high ceilings, the fireplace, the original frescoes, the large shuttered windows overlooking the 2000 year old Roman Road descending to the Tiber Valley transport the guest back in time. The lovingly restored, comfortably furnished apartment has every modern convenience, including WiFi. Anghiari, while stunningly beautiful and historically fascinating, is off the most-travelled tourist route, but is ideally situated for trips to by car or public transportation to Florence, Assissi, Cortona and the surrounding hill towns. Ideal for art lovers, enthusiastic walkers, and lovers of Italian cuisine and wine.

About Jennifer Barbarie

I am a retired Canadian diplomat who fell in love with Anghiari sixteen years ago. I bought my apartment in 1997 and over the years have taken great pleasure in restoring it.

Jennifer Barbarie purchased this apartment in 1997

Why Jennifer Barbarie chose Arezzo Province

Being in the heart of this marvelous town, off the beaten tourist track but with Florence, Assissi, Cortona, Arezzo and the many surrounding hill towns so easily accessible, is a great joy. Art lovers can easily follow the Piero della Francesca trail, starting in the Civic Museum of Sansepolcro, less than a 15 minute drive away. Over the years so many guests have commented on the friendliness of the locals.

What makes this apartment unique

Strolling the cobbled lanes, slanted piazzas, arched passages and around the neighbourly villas, palazzos and tiny churches – some originally Etruscan temples – which have jostled for space on this charming hilltop for at least a millenia, you find within a refflective, warming perspective on life, a leisurely pace, a sense of easy well-being. Va bene, as the locals say. Goes well.

The air is sweet with lavender and banks of flowers cascading from parapets, hanging pots and secret, sloping gardens. The heat is dry and comforting. In the the late afternoon the famously golden light gilds the faces of friends and the thousand year-old bricks of the surrounding wall. The hillside is brilliant with fields of sunflowers, glistening corn and silvery groves of olive. The Tiber meanders through the plain below and cyprus trees stand watch on the ridges.

The local cuisine is to die for. When ordering fungi, the savory, crisp roasted delicacy that makes a masterpiece of mushrooms, be sure to order at least two plates or be prepared to fight with your friends. Make it up to them by taking them for lunch to the Osterria at Tavernelle. The fresh ravioli – silky and pliant – are the best in the world. On market day, pop a local, baby tomato in your mouth, but be prepared to stop in your tracks while taste buds adjust to the sheer vitality of their exploding, crimson flavours.

Bella Tuscany!

  • 5 of 5

I've heard about this town and this property for years and was thrilled to finally have an opportunity to see what all the fuss was about. Anghiari has to be one of the prettiest towns in Italy, with superb restaurants and cafes, the friendliest people, and amazing views out over the Tiber Valley. I loved going on day trips to Florence, Perugia, Cortona, Arezzo and many charming hill towns nearby. I loved the apartment. It is very comfortable, beautifully restored and decorated, and completely equipped. I couldn't rate it more highly.

Wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

We spent 6 days in this lovely apartment full of both history and comfort. What an unusual apartment, beautifully decorated, with modern conveniences and full of light. When we stepped out the front door and looked down to the left we could see the road, built by the Romans, for miles down, into and across the valley. The town square was just a few yards away with several restaurants and shops. Unbelievable to think that these building were built so long ago and are still in use today. It was the experience of a lifetime and we would highly recommend it to anyone.

Cozy, well equipped, home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

This lovely apartment was the perfect "home base" for four women to enjoy travel in the Tuscan countryside. The apartment was clean, kitchen well equipped, looked just like the pictures. Local grocery stores and restaurants provided us with all our eating/cooking needs. Jennifer provided information and answered questions prior to our travel and Guiseppe was there to help when we arrived and during our stay. Anghiari is a lovely medieval village that you will want to visit a second time.

Wonderful apartment in beautiful Anghiari

  • 4 of 5

Firstly, I would like very much to return, both to Anghiari and to this comfortable apartment in the 'Renaissance' part of town. Anghiari is small enough that we were able to get to know parts of the community we met on almost a daily basis - the lovely butcher and his family, the newsagent and the people running 'our' caffe, the Caffe Garibaldi, where we had good coffee and a pastry every morning and sometimes an aperitif in the evening. With a big bedroom downstairs and another upstairs, each with its own bathroom, the high-ceilinged apartment was spacious enough for four of us to share our holiday comfortably. We cooked together in the well-stocked kitchen upstairs and relaxed in the tastefully furnished lounge room most evenings. We enjoyed day trips out to go for long walks in the Tuscan hills and to visit other charming towns such as Monterchi and Citta de Castella. But Anghiari, with its medieval walled section and wonderful vistas, remains the gem. As I said, I would love to return, but for three months instead of three weeks.

perfetto

I have now stayed in this beautiful apartment several times - and that speaks for itself! Gorgeous proportions, very comfortable and tastefully furnished; renovated with great care. Good kitchen for cooking, after shopping for the incredibly fresh local food. I have been inside other places in this town, and this one stands out. I love the location, looking down the straight road across the Tiber valley, and being part of the life of this wonderful town. Everything you could want is right here: art, culture, food, fantastic walks in the stunning Appenines. Friends who visited for the first time thought it was fantastic and plan to return themselves. I'll be back.

A Taste of Luxury in Anghiari

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have enjoyed this apartment very much. It made our stay in Anghiari ideal. The apartment is impressive - beautiful, comfortable and well-equipped. We easily prepared meals there on the occasions we were not on day trips. When we decided to eat in restaurants, we were spoiled for choice in Anghiari and the surrounding area. And, any time of day, it was pleasant to stop at a local café for cappuccino and to simply soak up the atmosphere of the place. Anghiari is a working town, the people are genial, and there is plenty to do and see. We highly recommend a visit there and a ten-day stay allows travellers to take in the town and visit other destinations of historical and cultural interest.
