Duck Lake House/Glacier Park/St.Mary&Many Glacier

Bedrooms 2
Property type house

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 8-10)

This Duck Lake cabin is located 30 yards back from the lake, with two different access ways to water . It is owned by a couple who have worked for and around Glacier National Park since 1999. Their love for the Park, their associations with the locals, and passion for the outdoor lifestyle is what drew them to this property. The secluded, private cabin is only a short drive to and from the St. Mary’s entrance to the Park and the Many Glacier entrance.

After a full day of adventures in and around the Park you can retire to your cabin that has a fully equipped kitchen and cozy rooms for relaxing. There are 2 bedrooms- one with 2 Queen beds, the other with 2 Double beds, and a Futon pull-out that sleeps 2 located in the Living Room. A full size bathroom and laundry facilities round out your amenities.

**This property does require that you supply your own drinking water, but the water is safe for laundry, dishes, and cooking!**

**Also to be expected are the occasional cows that will stroll through the property. These cows are free-range cows around Duck Lake, and have access to any property via the lake. They are harmless, and we strive to clean up after them in between tenants!**

**We also encourage tenants to make sure they keep their food put away at night and when out and about during the day, so not to attract mice to the house. We have two cats that live on the property who are in charge of keeping them away! **

Adequate, but with lots of cow pats

  • 3 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights the week of 9/10. It is a convenient location to Many Glacier and St Mary. Be aware there is no cell service or wi-fi (we knew this going in).

On the plus side: the place was roomy, secluded, quiet, and clean. The appliances worked well, including the washer/dryer (with soap). Beds were comfortable. Plenty of towels. Plenty of pots/pans/dishes for cooking.

On the minus side: 1) there are cow pats all over the property: on the front lawn, driveway, way to trash shed, on the path to the lake, and all along the shoreline. 2) At no time during our stay did we have the correct key to secure our cabin. 3) The furniture in the place is old and tired (examples: couch along the wall is like sitting on plywood, the "rocking chair " in the upper loft is broken). 4) My communication experience with Erin was that telephones call with her were very difficult to arrange - instead use Text or the messaging part of the App. 5) The access to the loft (second bedroom) is through a ladder - so you need to be thoughtful about who can safely be in the loft. The floor of the loft is very creaky!

Suggestions for the owners:

1) Fix the locks on both front doors. Then make sure the keys are correct. If you are not going to fix the front locks, at least put a sign by the doors on the inside to alert your residents to which doors should and should not be locked.

2) Update the furniture to something more comfortable (less than 10 yrs old), particularly the couch along with wall and rocker upstairs.

3) Move the kitchen light switch to a standard wall location. It took some hunting to find it.

4) Fix the creaking floors in the loft.

5) Regularly cleaning up the cow pats on the property.

This place was adequate for a clean place to rest our heads after a full day in the park. No positive "WOW" experiences here. Taking a stroll down to the lake was like tip-toeing thru a cow pattie field.

Great property close to East Glacier

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 8 had a terrific vacation at the Duck Lake house. The house is perfectly situated for visiting East Glacier National Park. We were very pleased with the fully stocked kitchen, four queen beds, and the washer/dryer. Erin was a fantastic host. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Duck Lake house to anyone visiting Glacier National Park

Very nice and very quiet.

  • 4 of 5

Glacier NP is not what I would call crazy busy by any stretch of the imagination, but it does get a bit crowded in places. Getting a little ways away from the Park at Duck Lake was so nice. The setting in the trees and close proximity to the lake made this a wonderful place to stay. And it was so quiet. There are tons of stars visible. Accommodations are very comfortable and clean. Erin went out of her way to be sure we had anything we needed and there was a lot of information about the area available as well.

Nice cabinesque home in a cow pasture

  • 2 of 5

This home was clean and suited our needs. I thoroughly enjoyed just unplugging for a couple of days. The problem was the vast amount of cow poop in the yard and the overgrowth of brush. If you let cows poop in your yard, It's called a rake. You have to use it EVERYDAY and clean it up. I am a southern farm girl and I know manure build up when I see it. There are layers upon layers of old manure piled one on top of the other and where there is manure there are flies. We killed about 20 just from leaving the doors open to get our suitcases in. Also desperately in need of a pair of hedge clippers and a weekend of clean up. I am all about a clean and well maintained yard and there is just no excuse for allowing that manure to build up like that around your home. It should not be rented without specifically stating in vrbo these exact conditions. I read about the manure in someone else's review and your reply was they occasionally wander up so I trusted what the owner said. The cows are clearly living there. The fence is down and they use it for shade. They were there laying down when we pulled up.

Owner's Response: Emily, It is a shame your trip and the landscaping did not meet your expectations. We strive to keep the house inside clean, stocked, and comfortable for our tenants stay. The lawn is mowed, but we do not strive to have impeccable landscaping, instead sticking with the cabin in the woods feel. We are lucky enough to be able to have a home on the beautiful Blackfeet Indian Reservation, and with that comes the occasional cow. They are not constant, but seem to be retreating to any shade they can find this year due to the smoke, fires, and unusually high temperatures. The cows are free-range cows throughout Duck Lake, and they find their way to every and all properties via the lake. They by no means live on our property, nor is our property a "cow pasture" as you referred to it. Our property is not intended to have a "lodge" feeling to it, we live in the woods and advertise as a cabin with the hope that through reviews and the description people will decide if it works for them.

Clean lodging in a convenient location

  • 4 of 5

We wished we would have had time to get to know this area better and appreciate the Duck Lake House more, since we were only here one night. The house was very clean and gave our party of four plenty of room, and the location was just what we needed near Many Glaciers. Erin was very gracious in being available to call for added directions, and we found her pleasant and flexible to work with in arranging our vacation. The place was quiet, and we did manage to find our way to Duck Lake and look around a little. We also found the washer and dryer very convenient, and made use of them.

The upstairs is a loft with somewhat steep stairs/ladder to access it. The other drawback was a lack of curtains on the loft window to keep the early morning light out.

I know it's not the reason most people come here, but we were unable to get any channels on the TV and only found one DVD to watch, so you might think of bringing your own. Also there is no cell coverage (and no landline), which isn't unusual for this part of Montana, but people need to be aware of that. (You can reach cell service a few miles down the road.)

Overall, we were satisfied with our stay at Duck Lake House and appreciated working with Erin. It provided what we needed to help make our travels in and out of Glacier easier.
