We visited the Gulf coast and the Pacific coast resorts of Mexico looking to buy the perfect ocean-front house, and we found it at the end of our year-long search in the state of Oaxaca, 15 minutes south east of Puerto Escondido and in the southwest corner of Mexico.
As we drove into the access road from the Carretera Costera (PanAmerican highway) we saw the entrance framed with huge red and white bougainvillea bushes, the road itself was planted with cacti, tall trees and palms, and 30 meters before reaching the Costa Cumaná gate we drove through a lovely tropical lagoon, la Laguna Encantada (the Enchanted Lagoon), that was densely vegetated, populated with hidden cackling chachalacas, and which provided a welcome shady corridor. As we drove to look at our future house we immediately knew we had encountered our vacation paradise and our dream house facing the open ocean 50 meters away! Every moment that we spend at our house, La Libélula (Lee-béh-loo-lah//Dragonfly), we count our blessings!
We wanted to live part-time in year-round sun and warmth in intimate proximity to the ocean. The temperature at La Libélula ranges from 75 to 85 degrees most of the year and in the summer there are daily short-lived tropical rains.
We had heard about the natural wonders of the Puerto Escondido from two reliable sources. Ed’s brother was an international surfer, always looking for the best waves. He had frequented Puerto to surf at Zicatela beach whose surf is called the Mexican Pipeline and is in the top 10 surfing spots in the world for expert surfers. Patricia's daughter is an ecologist working and living in Queretaro’s Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, and she informed us that the entire Puerto Escondido zone was deemed an ecological preserve for turtles, birds, alligators, and the black iguana.
The house was built by a Mexico City couple who dedicated an entire year travelling back and forth to La Libélula as it was being built and lavishly paid attention to the smallest details in design, e.g., tall ornamental walls with hand-made and decorated multi-colored tiles grace the entrance and one side of the lap pool that feeds into the main pool, the floor in front of the master bed has an inlay of tropical leaves made with colored stones, the master bed faces the ocean directly, 4 bedrooms to accommodate many guests and family members, and much more.
Keywords: One storey, 1 master BR, 3BR with 1 queen and 1 single beds, ceiling fans, lap swimming pool, palapa roof over beachfront living and dining rooms, study with A/C, wi-fi, TV, tropical and desert gardens, full time housekeeping and ground keeping services.
Ed and Patrici live in northern California most of the time. Patricia was born in Mexico City, and Ed was born in Los Angeles and is of Mexican and Irish heritage. Ed was a developmental psychologist researcher/test developer and she is a clinical neuropsychologist. Our careers have focused on issues regarding cognition and language development and the Spanish speaking populations in the United States. Patricia has a private practice, and Ed loves to play golf winner of many local championships. He also loves to make fine furniture with hard woods, and has been a mask collector for over 40 years. Patricia, through her daughter’s work as an ecologist, has a great interest on environmental and economic sustainability in areas with communities living in extreme poverty. Daughter and mother run a non-profit organization called “Viva Sierra Goda,” under the sponsorship of Earth Island Institute.
While in Puerto, besides socializing, and experiencing an amazing and peaceful closeness to nature particularly when watching the waves right in front of the swimmi we watch surfers at Zicatela beach, rent boats to snorkel, fish, and wwatch close-up whales, dolphins, turtles, etc. in the high seas. We also visit the many festivals in towns along the coast: beautiful masked dances, rodeos, Mixtec ball tournaments, religious ceremonies with boat processions, carnivals, etc. Along the many lagoons (Manialtepec, Naranjos) in the Puerto Escondido coast one can go boating, kayaking, swimming, bird watching, etc. There are a 130 different species of birds in this coastal zone. At the beach in front of our house this year, 2015, we +/or guests have witnessed turtles leave the ocean to lay eggs on the beach in front of our house. Turtles are endangered and their eggs poached for profit or nourishment. So, residents and visitors watch out to protect the eggs and place them in a safe camouflaged place once the mother leaves them. We feel blessed!
Patricia Perez-Arce purchased this house in 2008
We chose to buy our house in the development called Costa Cumaná for various reasons. The first is that it is gorgeous and well kept. It is legally constituted as a condominium and thus owners pay annual fees for the upkeep and protection of the common grounds, i.e., the infrastructure, flora and fauna, the maintenance of the roads, and entrance security. We also are in charge of maintaining and protecting the federal zones that border Costa Cumaná, the beach and the lagoon. It is also a bit remote from the hustle and bustle of the tourists at Zicatela’s surfing beach and Puerto Escondido. We have 8 km of beach fronting our house, Most days we see maybe 5 people walking by, 10 at the most. So we have privacy, solitude, and unrivaled beauty in front of us all day. And while we love Oaxaca City with its amazing art and cultural life, rich nearby towns unique for their arts and crafts, and framed by famous pre-Colombian Zapotec ruins, we wanted to live occasionally in year-round sun and warmth with intimate proximity to the ocean. We’re delighted that Oaxaca City is just 6 hours away, a short half hour flight, and that in a couple of more years the new highway being built will shorten the trip to 2.5 hours! Or so they say...
Costa Cumaná development is 25 minutes from the Puerto Escondido airport and 1 hour 20 min. from the Huatulco airport. The Huatulco resorts and golf course are 1.5 hours away. While you can rent or hire taxis to take you around, the highway is 1 km from our house. There are numerous types of public transportation that go back and forth all day in front of the entrance to the access road. Every 10 minutes or less you can hail down a collective taxi, a minibus, a microbus, or an autobus that go directly to Puerto Escondido’s downtown or in the opposite direction to Huatulco. In the town of Tomatal, 5 min. by car, thre are 3 small grocery shops good for the basics, one opens on Sunday. In this town there is a small artisanal factory of peanut butter (crema de cacahuate) and sesame butter, Tahini. This region is the capital of peanuts in Mexico. The fields one drives by on the road to Costa Cumana's entrance are peanut fields. We have a house manager who oversees the running of our house. Our manager ensures that the kitchen is well supplied, that our/your favorite foods and beverages are always in stock, and she will arrange excellent and reliable services for those who want to rent cars or ride taxis. The cooks we hire excel in the preparation of typical Oaxacan cuisine along with traditional Mexican dishes and standard international fare. Fish and seafood dishes are key specialties, grilled or not. They are adept in cooking for vegetarians. Great margaritas!
My husband and I, along with two other couples, stayed at La Libelula for 7 days. As soon as you walk through the front door, you see the beautiful pool facing the ocean. The house is very spacious and comfortable. We were six adults staying there and we never felt cramped. The staff took care of everything for us. From cooking our meals to calling us taxis to setting up excursions for us... They did it all! And every meal was delicious! The house, the location and the staff are all amazing! We can't wait to return to La Libelula!
As soon as we walked through the front door our dreams did come true!!! This house was paradise! It was beautifully decorated with lots of love. My kids who were 8 and 11 felt right at home. The wonderful staff welcomed us like a family. Our memories included: cooling off in the pool while gazing out at the beautiful waves crashing on the beach, boogie boarding in the ocean, collecting shells on the beach, visiting the Iguana reserve which was only a 20 minute drive, driving into town in Puerto Escondido, boat tour in the ocean and we saw Turtles and Dolphins, surf lessons, horseback riding and eating the delicious meals prepared by the chef. We stayed 2 weeks and it went by so fast. We already miss the home and will definitely come back!!!!! Thank you for allowing our dreams to come true!!!!!
The house has a quiet location with a fabulous beach view, beautiful pool, and comfortable outdoor lounging area but most of all it comes with wonderfully attentive and helpful staff and amazing cook. Every time we left for a meal, we regretted it! We would all highly recommend La Libelula.
We stayed at la Libélula for our honeymoon and we can't wait to marry each other again so we can go back! The property is truly one-of-a-kind and and house is beautifully designed and decorated without attempting the impossible task of competing with the out-of-this-world scenery. You are literally steps from the waves here, with nothing between you and the water but a row of coconut palms, a brilliant green lawn, and pearly sand. You can sit with a cup of coffee and fresh orange juice in the morning and watch sea turtles and manta rays cavort in in the surf. The pool is refreshing and we spent most of our days sitting next to or in it, refusing to tear ourselves away from the spectacle. Although we went during the hottest time of the year, the house has the perfect balance of indoor and outdoor spaces to keep comfortably cool. We capped each day with a long walk on the near-empty beach and watched the sunset exploding across the sky. The groundskeeper and managers at the house are lovely and incredibly helpful and we left feeling like we had made new friends. Oh, and don't spend all your time on the beach-side of the house - the cactus garden on the land-side is superb!
By far has been the nicest place to stay I have ever been, as the location is gorgeous, La Libélula stands out as a beautiful house, were every detail has been polished and a friendly and efficient staff, excellent food and amazing sunsets. And easy to get from the Puerto Escondido airport. So if you really want to relax in beautiful spot, this should be your choice, just to stay there or explore the many atractions in the region.
We have visited multiple times and each time has been fantastic. The house is amazing- beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The living area has fantastic views of the beach and ocean, and the sunsets are amazing. There are often dolphins and whales that can been seen making there way along the cost.
The staff took care of everything we needed so all you need to think about is where to take your afternoon nap! The food was fantastic and you really get a feel for traditional Oaxacan cuisine.
What also great about the house is the pool. It is T-shaped and perfect both for those who want to swim laps but also great for kids (large and small) who want to splash about.
Puerto is about a fifteen minute drive so it is easy to get into town but also very private. A great escape for anyone looking to get away and experience Mexico! We'll definitely be back...
Nearest navigable lagoon is 5 minutes away, extensive bird sanctuary 45 min., Zicatela beach 10 min., Mazunte 40 min., Huatulco 1 hr 30 min, and in the region there are frequent baby turtle liberations, turtle/iguana/alligator preserves, indigenous/cultural festivals, and mexican arts and crafts
