About the property

This is a House in The Charming Community of Gulfport, minutes to St. Petersburg

Located directly on Boca Ciega Bay leading to the Gulf of Mexico, this beautiful bungalow went through a full year of renovations. Keeping in mind the craftsmanship of this home and the her history. Attention to detail is found through out the home from continuing the baseboards in marble in the bathrooms to match the baseboards in the main rooms to matching the columns found in the porch.

Peaceful colors of water and trees brings a calmness to from the moment you enter.

Over time we began to realize what a special place Gulfport and Gommer's is. We then made decisions that would last a lifetime in any changes we made. We thought about details already there and copied them in other area's. We brought the original floors to their warm sheen and hunted down old pine to match areas that needed repair.

We thought about what makes a home comfortable and what makes you sleep well.

There are three bedrooms, two with Sleep/Number beds. 300+ thread count 100% cotton. Everything fresh and clean. Each bedroom has its own sense of privacy with two and half baths attached or close by. Each bath has marble subway tile.

The kitchen was completely opened up leading to an open floor plan, so you may enjoy the water view and your company. With new appliances, farm sink, gas range, dishwasher, and washer dryer.

It has a screen porch leading to the water and a large lot for outdoor recreation and peaceful relaxation. The rope swing from when Dan was a little boy is still there.

One morning I was eating my breakfast down by the water and watched a gentleman fly fishing. A Heron was watching him and ever so slowly worked his way over to him. Eventually they were so close, they could have touched each other. The fisherman never knew, until that moment, that the bird was there. He turned slowly and looked at the tall thin gray bird, just as the bird turn to him. They stayed that way for a bit, as if they both knew why they were there.

It is a quiet, peaceful, special place waiting for you to slow down and take a breath. To read a book. To listen to the birds. To laugh with friends. To drink a glass of wine or a cold brew.

About Mary Crear

Our name is Dan and Mary Crear. This is Gommer's house. That's what he called his Grandmother. Gommer. As life would have it, the time came when Gommer needed help and came to spend more time in Minnesota with Dan's parents.

When the time came, Dan's mom inherited the home and it was her time to care for this wonderful old home.

So Liza and Bill took over, and it was where they brought the kids to visit their cousins. Play on the beach and enjoy the sunshine. Found on the bookshelves, that line the entry hall, you will see pictures of them and other family members, enjoying their childhood.

Then they too came to a place in time, where they wanted less to worry about and wondered if any of the kids might like to buy her. There were five children and we where the last in line.

We bought this house, when we were young and poor, with a plan to live here when our kids were grown. So we rented it out and waited for our time to come.

It is here and ready now. We made this house, our home and want to share it with others.

We placed a great deal of thought, into what a retreat is and how do you make a house, a home.

Our plan was to move here in the next five years, but after spending time in Gulfport and in this wonderful property, that will be a much shorter wait.

Mary Crear purchased this house in 1980

Why Mary Crear chose Gulfport

Gommer's House has her own private white shelled beach, that is very secluded with folage shielding each side. See the large horseshoe crabs crawling though the water. Fish jump and fishermen in waders, fly fishing for evening dinner.

In the morning you will watch the sun rise and see the wildlife catch their breakfast. Pelican's with their big beaks and plunging dives. Woodstorks, White Ibis, Heron's, Willet and not to mention the Osprey. We have a beautiful Hawk who will take a lunch and visit the yard.

See the old oaks with their moss covered limbs stretching over the yard, giving cool relief to afternoons. Old pines mixing in with tall palms to fill in the shade. Quiet neighbors who care about each other, but respect your privacy. The neighbors multicolored cat, who keeps to herself but makes sure no critters bother you.

A newly screened porch with refinished floors and new doors to sit and rock your day away. You watch the water change and sparkle, with the occasional sailor and kayak pass by.

It is a classic bungalow in a wonderful setting. Brick roads lead up to Gommer's front door. Then you enter a newly renovated 1940's Bungalow. Renovated from top to bottom and end to end, keeping in mind the era and charm of this home.

Every window and door has been painstakingly removed, striped down and rebuilt. All the original hardware stripped and rebuilt. Large muti paned windows, look out over old trees and bay views.

Colors of the walls reflect the colors of the foliage and the colors of the beach. Nine foot ceilings, lead up to coffered beams of classic style, in the dining room. Clean newly painted white woodwork, though out the house, brings a sense of light and calm.

Cushioned couches flank each side of the fireplace, with a table to set your book and glass of wine. Shells fill the hearth, found over the years. Rare old yellow pine floors, that where newly refinished to a warm sheen. More to follow

What makes this house unique

So how is Gommer's unique? Because homes, like this have been torn down or remuddled or made into condo's. Time stands still here. It was a time when things were built to last forever. We have worked, to keep that in mind, when we brought her back to her glory.

This dining room with seating for eight, allows your guests and family to look over and see the beautiful bay view. At the same time the cook can visit with them and see it too. Ample room for dishes and glasses in the built in buffet. Everything is kept simple and to a minimum just as needed. Eight place mats,

eight cups, eight bowls, and plates. Ten wine glasses. You'll need one or two while you prepare dinner.

Heading to the kitchen brings you to the farm sink, built by one artisan from start to finish. Just the way they have always been built. We did decide that some things have to change. Dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, stainless refrig with water and ice in door. Washer/Dryer all new. Then we return to the classic white wainscoting of cupboard doors. Soapstone countertops that have a softness that wears with age.

The floors that aren't old yellow pine are greecian white marble mosac with small diamond dark gray inset. Subway tiles in the same white marble used for the backsplash. Simple and clean.

These same tiles line the shower walls. All the way to the ceiling

Glass doors and shining chrome fixtures. All new fixtures in the baths, including an airjet tub with dual controls, pedestal sink in master. Walk in shower with lots of room. We made sure the shower adjusts to those who are 5ft and those who are 7ft. Vanity sink has carrera top and glass knobs. Large chrome mirror for those 5 or 7ft.

A perfect stay for two couples, with the third bedroom offering a quiet get away. Relax on the pottery barn couch and read away from the others, with a view of the water. Room to enjoy each other & work if you must.

I love this home and miss it everytime I leave. The history and feeling of this property brings to mind Atticus Finch. A time when homes were built to last and children could play outside for hours. Boats float by. Fisherman cast lines. Beds so comfortable you will sleep deep and then wake up, to walk down to the beach for coffee at sunrise. Watch pelicans dive for breakfast. See horseshoe crab and collect shells to add to the fireplace. Later you walk into town for breakfast at Stellas. Fried Green Tomatoe Omelet is my favorite. Visit Tuesdays Fresh market. Art fair or just walk the shops. Back home to read a book. You prepare a simple meal, as you sip a glass of wine. Walking out to the porch, sitting on one of the rockers, glass in hand watching the sparkle on the bay. This home was refurbished with care, for warmth and comfort. We are holding for the next generation and want you to appreciate and enjoy it too.

Another fabulous vacation at this house

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Gommer House for two weeks from December 2017 to January 2018 and had a fabulous time. The house is beautiful and super clean with everything you could need. It has a lovely front porch overlooking the lawn down to the water and lots of shady spots to sit and enjoy the beach. Plus, it is only a block away to all the restaurants and shops in Gulfport. There is also a short walk to a Nature Park that we enjoyed each morning. We stayed here last year too and hope to stay again in this house next year. Thank you Mary and Paula for making our stay in Gommer House perfect!

Awesome, quiet, tranquil, amazing upkept and clean house!!

  • 5 of 5

I have to say, I have stayed in many places, and this is THE MOST cared for, nice, clean house!!! when the owner says, "you can eat off the floors', it is not just a statement! It is amazingly kept. Everything you ever need is there: dishes, beach toys, plenty of name it!!! And we even had a welcome bottle of wine waiting for us! the keeper of the property is super nice and responsive!

We stayed with kids and they absolutely loved it: you can sit and relax by the water, on the screened-in porch, patio, the swing... the house is just awesome! Kids loved collecting snails, watch birds and dolphins. the restaurants are just a few steps away!

Delightful Home on the Water

  • 5 of 5

This is absolutely the nicest house I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy on HomeAway. It is a classic –beautiful but also comfortable, warm and welcoming. The yard, back porch and beachfront are perfect for immersing oneself in complete relaxation. From the beach there were constantly entertaining views of birds and fish jumping. While an incredibly peaceful setting, the house is only a block away from the main street with several great restaurants. Paula was wonderful in welcoming us and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. We look forward to returning next year! -- Gillian

I love Gommer's House!

  • 5 of 5

I was delighted with Gommer's House. The large lawn-the huge live oaks-the Boca Ciega Bay view-the screened -in porch -all complemented the inside of this serene and charming bungalow. The up-dates and remodeling was tastefully and thoughtfully done. The BEDS-sleep number -and so comfortable! Many pillows and great feeling linens! Everything you could think of is there-for your enjoyment and comfort. Two and a half great bathrooms and original marble tiled floors and hardwood floors throughout.

All of this added up to a serene and peaceful month in Gulfport. The weather was not the greatest this past January, but the house helped us overcome the inclement weather . There is a great TV-movies and Wi-Fi and games and books for your enjoyment.

Outside is a grill and table and chairs and a beach of your own and a wonderful swing for kids!

I loved my month here and look forward to doing it again! Thanks Mary and Paula for everything!

Tranquil get away

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Gommers house. I celebrated a birthday as well as 25 years of marriage where we had a vow renewal ceremony overlooking the beautiful bay. The setting and weather were perfect. All the guests raved over the house and how well appointed it is. They made sure to help clean up so that we would be able to rent it again! The attention to detail and guest comfort is obvious, and the beds are all comfortable. We even received a phone call from the owner during our stay just making sure we were happy! Catered dinner by local Mangia Gourmet was excellent as well as a meal at Pia's which we had specially made by the chef himself. We live an hour away in Tampa but it felt like a real vacation!

I start the first day and almost everyother day with breakfast at Stellas!

Best breakfast and a wonderful way to meet Gulfport. Barb and her staff/family are warm, friendly and perfect.

Gulfport is distinguished by its high concentration of artisans inspired by the intense light and tropical scenery. A celebration the first Friday and third Saturday of each month called 'Art Walk' attracts locals and tourists. Many street performers, artists and craftspeople show up to create a relaxed cultured atmosphere in the warm balmy evening breezes coming off the beach at the end of the street.

'Old Florida' is a phrase often evoked in describing Gulfport's waterfront district, with its mix of small-scale cottages and small independent shops, restaurants and other businesses, situated among mature oak trees and brick-paved streets. Gulfport's recognition as a primary dining destination in Tampa Bay is exemplified by the proximity of over a dozen restaurants within walking distance along a few blocks on or near Beach Blvd.

Tuesdays are Fresh Market days in the Gulfport Waterfront district from 9 am to 3 pm, on Beach Blvd. The Fresh Market showcases fresh produce, cheese, seafood, honey, nuts, baked goods, plants, art and crafts, and local entertainment. The Fresh Market is a year-round event.

Annual festivals include 'Get Rescued in Gulfport' on the fourth Saturday of February, a charitable street festival featuring pet rescue organizations from throughout the region, vendors of pet products and demonstrations. SpringFest occurs on the fourth Saturday of March and involves a day devoted to local artists, crafters, live music and more. The July 4th celebration includes a parade, vendors, live music and a fireworks production staged at Williams Pier on the waterfront. Gecko Fest happens on Saturday of each Labor Day weekend and is the largest street festival of the year, including street performers, live music on multiple stages, and food, art and craft vendors.

The Catherine A. Hickman Theater of Gulfport is located on Beach Boulevard at 26th Avenue South and is a venue for live theatrical performances. The nearby Gulfport Senior Center offers activities throughout the week for residents within and outside of the city.

The Gulfport Casino Ballroom, located on the waterfront, is one of the main event venues in the city. The Casino hosts Swing, Salsa, Argentine Tango, and Ballroom Dance events five days a week with a large turnout from all across the Tampa area. The venue also is available for rent to the public and popular for weddings, company parties and functions, and holiday parties. The ballroom features a 5,000-square-foot (460 m2) authentic 1930s style dance floor.

Adjacent to the Casino, Gulfport Beach offers an attractive swath of sand on Boca Ciega Bay for swimming, sunbathing and family gatherings. Beach pavilions, a bocce ball course, a playground, and jogging circle near the Recreation Center offer amenities for all ages.

Teams assemble nearby for beach volleyball, while others enjoy picnics with tots on park swings.

Gulfport has a trolley system which passengers can ride around the city and the surrounding area for free.[9] The city is still a sleepy beach town but is gaining interest for its culinary and arts scene, and colorful ambiance. The downtown area has a few art galleries, as well as the Hickman Theater, a small performing arts center.

Foodies! All of Gulfports restaurants are owned by people who love food and their town. Culinary treats every where.

In 2011 Gulfport was named a finalist by Rand McNally for best food town in the U.S

My favorites are Stellas breakfast, , backfinblue, and Pia's for so much! Manga Gourmet for glutin free and

Open Mic is held every Thursday 7-9:30pm (6pm to sign up!)

Bars on the water O'maddys for food and sports. Salty's for local flavor and music. Known for its boat bar and fun.
