Taos Retreat near Ski Valley & Arroyo Seco- perfect for families, couples, solo

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,700 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 bath (sleeps 8) private adobe home with panoramic mt views

Whether you are an artist, photographer, writer, birder, hiker, skier, or a person seeking solace, you will enjoy the rose-colored sunrise, the fiery Western sunsets, and the brilliance of high desert stars from the patio of native plants and stones while relaxing in a bubbling hot tub. This comfortable, perfectly located, exquisitely refurbished 50-year-old Adobe home designed with a blend of colonial-Spanish and contemporary accents sits on the rim of the arroyo that cascades 200 feet to an ancient pastoral valley, the end of which funnels into the national forest road into Taos Ski Valley. Looking out the picture windows at the high sage plains atop the arroyo, your heart will soar 5000 feet upward cresting the snow-capped Sangre de Cristo Mountains. You are 15 minutes from the slopes, 15 minutes from the plaza, and 15 minutes closer to heaven.

In the summer months you will awake to crimson-colored mts as the sun's early morning light blankets the Sangre de Cristo Mts. The air is crisp and the skies a brilliant blue. This is about the time we hit one of the amazing trails along the Taos Ski Valley or the Rio Grande Gorge. This is also the time we take out those fly fishing poles and catch some wonderful trout for supper! In the late afternoon, we enjoy watching the occasional and short-lived showers dance across the mountains...and by sunset, the sky is painted a myriad of colors from orange to magenta and somewhere in between. Just when you think it doesn't get any better, the stars begin to pop out one by one until the night sky takes your breath away once again.

You’ll find some of the best southwestern fall foliage -- all to be enjoyed from the comfort of this enchanting home. Here, the aspens range in color from brilliant gold to dark orange. Feast on purple cinquefoil and golden and red cottonwoods. Hikes and mountain drives are breath-taking this time of year.

Every season holds adventure here -- and winters are one of the most beautiful and exhilarating! From November to April we enjoy a winter wonderland as we watch the snow fall on the mountains that can be seen from the large picture windows in the living room and all the bedrooms. Because Taos enjoys 300 sunny days a year, we find winter hiking, snow shoeing, skiing, snowboarding, sledding, cross-country skiing, snow tubing, and hot toddy sipping to be some of life's greatest pleasures.

Come see and experience all these for yourself. We hope you will enjoy our little slice of heaven as much as we do!

About Catherine

We are Texans at heart (and by birth), world adventurers, music lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts. We love wrestling with grandchildren, two-stepping to original Texas music, and breaking a sweat on trails in Austin (our home town) and in Taos (our home away from home).

Why Catherine chose New Mexico

After spending many seasons here in childhood, living here in young adult hood, and returning often for visits to this land that calls us again and again, we stumbled upon this wonderful home that we'd like to share with you. We are pleased to introduce you and our third generation to the joys of New Mexico's justifiably named Enchanted Circle.

What makes this house unique

When we first walked into this house, we were struck by the high vigas-ceilings, exquisite in-laid wood features, the arched entry ways, and the light beaming from multiple skylights that gave a warm New Mexico embrace to each room. We loved the open floor plan that sweeps effortlessly from the living room to the dining room (which seats 8) to the remodeled kitchen equipped to prepare a gourmet meal.

We were captivated by the 6 ft. windows in the living room that provide a magical, unobstructed mountain view from sunrise to sunset into a Milky Way Night sky. The living space extends to an outdoor front courtyard with a private hot tub from which you can enjoy a clear and unobstructed view of the beautiful night sky, full of stars! Outdoor seating provides a private vantage point to all this property has to offer. The backyard has a tiered space with grass, aspen, and apple trees as well as flagstone patio with outdoor seating.

We hope you will enjoy this slice of heaven and add your own descriptions of what makes it unique and so special for you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a beautiful home the firewood was piled high when we arrived and the house was clean with lights on. They had a starter fire ready for us when we arrived. This home is in a great location (close to ski valley). The home is very comfortable with everything a person could need. Very well stocked with cookware and condiments. Although I have never met her in person Catherine was extremely gracious and provided us with information to make our stay easy and enjoyable. I love the fireplaces especially the one in the bedroom and the heated floors are amazing - wish I had them in my home. Phil the manager does an extremely good job managing the home and is extremely helpful if you need it. Phil even mailed us home some things our grandson left in the house. My daughter and son-in-law liked the hot tub outside. The view from the front of this house is amazing. Thanks for a Wonderful Christmas.

Taos Retreat near Ski Valley & Arroyo Seco- perfect for families, couples, solo
average rating of 4.922078 based on 81 reviews

Beautiful place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

It is a well-kept property. It's beautiful and has everything you need to have a great time. It is so quiet and peaceful. Across the road is a path down into the valley with the river.

Also, the town of Arroyo Seco is a nice little place with a great grocery store and cafe (Taos Cow). You really do not have to go to Taos for anything.

We would definitely stay there again anytime.

Fabulous Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Taos Retreat spending 5 nights there mid August. There was plenty of room for 4 adults and two children. The view from the living room picture window and from the Courtyard is breathtaking. It is an easy drive into Taos and Taos Pueblo. We also enjoyed hiking in the Taos ski area up to Lake Williams. We had an interesting visit to the Earthship Community.. The hot tub in the courtyard was a real treat after activities. As a cook I was very happy with the well appointed kitchen. Both young and old enjoyed the supply of board games.

It was a great place for a three generation vacation.

Very nice and centrally located.

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful home! Perfect split bedroom layout with plenty of privacy. The hot tub was wonderful to soak in and look at the stars after a day of hiking, horseback riding or river rafting! The kids loved hiking down to the river across the street. The location was a wonderful starting point to explore the entire area and wasn't too far from anything. The home had everything we needed. We loved it!

Love this house!

  • 5 of 5

This was my second house at the Taos Retreat. This is truly a great house, inviting, comfortable and great location - just outside of Taos. This time I brought my sister and her nieces along with my husband and I - they enjoyed the house as much as we did.

A slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4, including two boys 8 and 13, came for a wedding. We turned it into a week-long vacation. The other wedding guests also rented houses that they found on the internet, and we visited each other's homes. Ours was rated the best--in our opinion and that of most others. Only one other house could compete.

What makes this one so wonderful? The scent of the flowers that greets you as you enter the garden gate. The flowers in colorful pots all blooming in different shapes and hues makes the front patio (shown in pictures) very beautiful. We enjoyed photographing each flower. The flowers also attract humming birds (two varieties or more), moths, and a few bees--great to watch. The view from the front porch is also as good as it gets--sweeping vistas, forest, and mountains. You can't see the arroyo, but it's immediately below on the other side of the road. Its vegetation is different than that of the mountains--Utah Juniper predominates. Access to the Arroyo is on a fairly steep trail that starts across the road. The trail leads down to a stream at the bottom. We didn't ford it, but you might bring some water shoes to wade across and explore the meadows visible beyond or climb the other side of the Arroyo.

The house itself is beautiful and well appointed--it had everything we needed other than food. Soap and shampoo, dishwasher soap, cleaning supplies, garbage bags--everything! Most impressive to us: the reused wooden architectural features: doors, doorframes, shower door frame, window lintels, all of beautifully carved old wood rescued from very old buildings. This, to us, made the house very special. In every other respect the house is a well-constructed adobe. Other houses had larger bathrooms and larger tubs--they were less traditional. We found the amenities luxurious without being excessive. It suits our aesthetics perfectly. For soaking and luxuriating, there's the hot tub in the corner of the front patio.

TVs--abundant, but who needed them???? Wireless internet excellent. Cellphone service not available to our phones. Land line is available and can be used to call anyone whose phone works. We contacted our friends and family via texting, since they didn't have phone service either.

We also fell in love with the nearby village of Arroyo Seco.

In short, every one of us wants to return. If we couldn't get this house, we know we'd be comparing and regretting what we were missing.

One caution: mosquitos on the patios.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this beautifully written and thoughtful review! My heart was warmed when reading the description of the garden and the flowers. I so enjoy nurturing this sweet space for guests and am so happy you appreciated and enjoyed the smells, sights, butterflies, and hummingbirds it affords. Your description of the reclaimed antique wooden features sounds like words from a design book - I am so grateful for your wordsmithing skills and the time you took to describe your experience at the Taos House Retreat. I am sorry about the mosquitos you encountered and hope the citronella candles were helpful at keeping them at bay. It's odd, the 5 years we have owned this house, this was the first year the mosquitos decided to visit the porch. Hopefully, it was a fluck in weather patterns and they will just as quickly and easily decide to leave! We look forward to your return!

Magically relaxing, perfect get away

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful views of both the sunrise and sunset. We totally enjoyed: watching the hummingbirds in the colorful courtyard flower garden, sleeping with the cool breeze blowing through the windows (in July!), watching artists paint across the street, the 5 minute drive to Arroyo Seco for amazing food (breakfast, lunch, and dinner!) Can't wait to experience in the winter here.
