ENJOY THE CHARM THAT ONLY A LOG CABIN CAN GIVE in this cozy quiet 2-bedroom vacation rental plus an additional bunkhouse to accommodate larger parties. Perfect for a romantic secluded getaway or you can bring the whole family. The children will love finding the board games and puzzles. When they tire of being indoors they have 3 acres of forest to play and wander on where they can let their imaginations fly.
Get a refreshing night's sleep in the new comfortable queen bed. Also find two twin beds in the 2nd bedroom and additional new double bed and twin bunk beds for 4 more people in the nearby bunkhouse. The bunkhouse is freshly remodeled throughout and has its own new bathroom, kitchenette and covered deck. It is also listed separately (see VRBO listing #844811).
COMFORT AND AMBIANCE - you can feel the warmth of the wood burning stove and see the beauty of the dancing flames through the glass window. Due to the new clearstory windows located at the top of the exposed beam ceiling natural sunlight fills each room with daytime brightness and sparkle. The shade of the pine trees always keeps the temperature in the cabin perfect.
BEAUTY AND CLEANLINESS - Find everything you need in the full kitchen to prepare your favorite meals. Dine on the pine kitchen table or out on the shaded porch. The bathroom has recently been remodeled, new entry addition and the owner has refinished most of the woodwork throughout the cabin and added many unique handcrafted touches. For your convenience find a washer and dryer. Linens are provided. Watch the new flat screen television, enjoy movies or listen to music with the cabin's new digital surround-sound system.
This cabin is comfortable, very clean, full of natural light from the many windows, has simple tasteful decorating and is well-maintained. While relaxing on the shaded porch watch the deer and the birds and see the sunset over Mesa Verde in the distance.
At an elevation of 7,820 feet the shade of the tall pines makes for cool evenings and comfortable days. The cabin is nestled on 3 forested acres of Ponderosa Pines and Gambel's Oak in beautiful Echo Basin, in the foothills of the La Plata Range of the San Juan Mountains. It is conveniently located right off a paved country road yet affords easy access to the boundary of the San Juan National Forest which is only a mile away.

We moved to the mountains of Colorado in 1974, fell in love with all it has to offer and have made it our cherished home. Here we raised our two children who are amazing young adults now. Over the years we built our house, 2-story garage with guest room and barn and have treated the land with care. Skiing, hiking, gardening, raising our own beef, landscaping the property and enjoying our dog and cat keep life interesting. To that we add traveling both afar and near with all the variety that is in the Four Corners.
Yes, we find time to pursue our careers. Rollin is a self-employed consulting geologist and Robin is an educator.
Rollin M. Lunders purchased this cabin in 2010
We purchased the cabin in fall 2010 from our friend George and his family who used it as a vacation getaway . George and his wife Margaret built this log cabin at the same time we created our home so we had a lot in common and enjoyed seeing them when they or their family members came to get away from it all. Since buying the cabin we have been working hard and having fun getting it ready to be a vacation rental. Much refinishing and insulating to make it winter worthy. In 2015 we remodeled the one room bunkhouse and added a bathroom, kitchenette and deck, turning it into a compact uniquely crafted 2nd cabin. We live just a short walk away and enjoy offering this comfortable vacation property for your next get away into nature. We are located in beautiful Echo Basin by the entrance of the San Juan National Forest with the Echo Basin Loop Drive. We are a five mile drive from Mancos, Colorado with nearby Mesa Verde National Park, Ute Mountain Tribal Park and so many other exciting and interesting destinations.
We love to relax on the shaded porch with a cool drink while watching the deer, listening to the birdsong and watching a gorgeous sunset. In the fall the aspen and Gambel oak trees in the area afford an amazing color show. Whether you are in the area for outdoor sports activities, sightseeing or just relaxing, the cabin is a great place to stay.
My husband, I and 3 kids enjoyed our stay at the La Plata Cabin for our after Christmas vacation. The cabin suited our needs well, and had everything we needed. The owner made sure that our wood stove(which we loved) was going, plowed the drive for us, and checked in on us to be sure all was well. Upon our arrival the owner had left homemade cookies for us. It had snowed before our arrival, and snowed 2 to 3 days while we were there. The kids loved playing outside at the cabin in the snow. We enjoyed being close to the Hesperus Ski area, where we spent most of our time. The cabin was located between Durango and Cortez, which allowed for many shopping/dinning options. Also, Mancos was just down the road and appeared to have several options. We look forward to visiting Colorado in the future and hope to stay at this cabin again.
We enjoyed returning to our quiet and peaceful cabin in the woods after full days of exploring Mesa Verde. It was very comfortable for our party of 3 adults. The owner was very responsive and helpful. We would return and also recommend to friends.
We recently had the pleasure of spending 30 days at the lovely La Plata Mountain Cabin. Our retreat truly was one of the most enjoyable and relaxing vacations we have ever had.
- The cabin is beautifully crafted, with high ceilings, natural light, and charming fixtures. You can tell it was built and is maintained with pride. It was also spotlessly clean.
- The location is perfect – private hideaway in the mountains but with 10 minute access to town and centrally located between Cortez and Durango.
- Every attention has been paid to make sure everything in the cabin is comfortable and well-appointed. We felt AT HOME but better from Day 1 to Day 30.
- Beds were very comfortable, shower was hot and water plentiful, and all appliances worked great.
- Our hosts, Rollin and Robin, were delightful and very informative.
- The porch was our very favorite place to hang out – enjoying the daily visits by the deer, including two sets of twin fawns. At night the stars were breathtaking.
We had another couple join us for several nights and the cabin very easily accommodated four people. We each had space but could hang out together; talking, cooking, or playing cards. It was much better vibe than having separate hotel rooms or cabins on a cruise ship – we spent time and made memories.
Our daughter also visited with our three grandgirls during our stay and we opted to also rent the bunkhouse for those nights. The grandgirls were overjoyed – they were so excited to be staying in their own “tiny house” in Colorado. The bunkhouse is truly a marvel in efficiency; functional and also very comfortable. It is also beautiful, with cool touches like the kitchen window created out of a pick-up truck windshield.
THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO within easy driving distance of the cabins. There is a wonderful horse-riding stable just down the road and the National Forest is only 5 minutes away. In Durango we went river rafting, enjoyed Purgatory Resort, hiked some of the Colorado trail and took the amazing train to Silverton. Mesa Verde is less than 20 minutes away. Pagosa Springs has hot springs, waterfalls and river trails. There was fly fishing, kayaking, and mountain biking just short drives away. Arches National Park was an easy day trip along with the San Juan Skyway, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and Monument Valley.
Truly, we cannot recommend the La Plata Mountain Cabin enough – it was so hard to leave this magical place!
Great location, very peaceful and quiet. Easy access to Mesa Verde, Durango, and surrounding area, yet still away from the crowds. Cabin was well kept and thoughtfully appointed with everything needed for an enjoyable stay. Great spot for a low key getaway with family and friends. Owner was very responsive and committed to providing a terrific accommodation. Would definitely return. Highly recommend.
Family of 4 consisting of 2 daughters - 3 & 11. The owner was absolutely the most accommodating and sincerely caring individual we have ever experienced when renting a VRBO property. Every good remark in all of these reviews are absolutely 100% correct. The area had received considerable snow before we arrived. However, Rollin made sure the driveway was plowed, a comforting fire was awaiting our arrival, and every question about the absolutely stunning, well maintained, and peaceful property was an easy phone call away. I cant't say enough about our experience. If your adventures are located in this area of Colorado, you would be foolish not to take advantage of this property, surroundings, and owner. We dog sled in the San Juan National Forest, rode the Narrow Gauge train through Cascade Canyon, skied at Telluride, visited Mesa Verde and the Four Corners, tubed Hesperus, and even drove to the hot springs in Pegosa Springs. Our Incredible vacation and beautiful winter wonderland was only overshadowed by Rollin's professionalism, insight, endless accommodations, and respect for our complete enjoyment and privacy. I truly can't say enough about the property and owner. We will definitely be staying here again and you should too!
Excellent. Could not have been better. Owner was great. I have traveled so much. I give this cabin and the owners an A+. Best vrbo property.
