House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)
Custom built holiday home perched on Paku Hill with incomparable views of the Pacific Ocean, coastline and offshore islands. Spacious, protected deck to watch moonrises and sunsets. Trail from the house leads to long, sandy Ocean Beach, ideal for swimming, good snorkling along the reef & surfing when conditions are right, a morning jog or basking in the sun. Enjoy a hot outside shower with a 180 degree view. Walk along the estuary one kilometer to the town of Tairua with shops & services. Or closer to the wharf and ferry, dive shop, charter fishing and our favorite restaurant - 'Old Mill.' House is open and airy with local wood floors, cabinets and detailing, open beam ceilings, modern kitchen, carpeted bedrooms, fireplace for chilly nights, and a deck large enough to spend most your time. The master suite takes the entire upstairs with views all around. Very quiet, romantic & peaceful setting. Tairua on the Coromandel Peninsula has a Maritime climate with year round activities. Excellent fishing and diving and we enjoy our own catches of crayfish (lobster) and paua (abalone) and snapper often. Kayak in the estuary or to nearby Motuhoa Island. Most days we find we do not need to, or want to drive anywhere. Besides all the ocean activities there are local walks & trails, biking, or take the 10 minute ferry to Pauanui. There are easy drives to a multitude of unique & beautiful beaches, and to a host of other activities such as exploring the old goldmines in Broken Hills, wine tasting in Mercury Bay, thermal bathing at low tide at Hot Water Beach ,or a visit to the giant Kauri trees. Just a two + hour drive from Auckland airport.

About Laurel Brier
We are Hawaii residents who designed and oversaw the building of this home in 1998. Rob is a contractor in Hawaii and I am a vocational counselor with the State of Hawaii. Daughter Andrea (age 30) is in a PhD program at the University of Auckland and 28 year old son Lucas is an arborist/ farmer/hunter/fisherman/surfer living on the Big Island with his new bride, Mallory, his surf and business partner and nurse by profession.
Laurel Brier purchased this House in 1998
Why Laurel Brier chose Thames-Coromandel District
We honeymooned in New Zealand in 1976 and have been visiting ever since. We spent a good part of 1999 in Tairua with our children enrolled in the local schools. Tairua is the other paradise we live when we have the chance.
What makes this House unique
We swim, surf, fish, hike, bike, read, snorkle, jog, walk to town and rarely drive when we are in Tairua. We will go to Hot Water Beach and hike to Catheral Cove and ride the bikes to Pauanui and take the ferry back to Tairua. We usually take one big drive to visit another area. In November 2012 we hiked the Heaphy Trek and the Abel Tasman. In March 2011 and 2013 we spent time in the Bay of Islands and the Kauri forests, in April 2010 we did a several day bike ride in Otago and hiked the Kepler Trek. It is now May of 2015 and the whole family just returned from a two month stay in NZ. We toured the north and south island hiking the Kepler and Queen Charlotte Track and the coastal walkway around Cape Reinga. Lucas showed Mallory the magic of Aotearoa for the first time.

Fabulous house and location with sweeping views of the beach below Paku Hill and the Pacific Ocean!
It was wonderful every morning to come into the kitchen and dining room and see the glorious vista! The place was well located to places to visit on the coast - Hot Water Beach, Cook’s Beach, Cathedral Cove, Sailors
Grave and Whitangi. Easy to get to restaurants like the Old Mill and the Marina Bar and Grill. Very comfortable home to stay in with all amenities!

Stunning views. Great location.Amazing house!
We loved our time here. We didnt want to go out for dinner but cooked each night and enjoyed the view.Every window has an amazing vista! Very comfortable.
Gorgeous property, gorgeous location
This home was absolutely fantastic. The location, the views, the amenities, everything was wonderful. We would highly recommend this to anyone traveling to New Zealand. The Coromandel Peninsula was a great place to spend the end of our trip. Loved the singing of the Tui birds in the trees, and the view from the kitchen window made cooking (and cleaning!) a true joy. Gem of a home.
Best view ever!
The scenery from the house is as fabulous as the pictures show - stunning! We stayed five nights at the start of our vacation after flying in from the U.S. The amenities and home layout are really nice and the property is close enough to town to get groceries or go out to eat and day trips to areas north on the peninsula are convenient.
There were 3 of us together and it wasn't clear to me from the pictures about how much seating was in the living room - there is one couch but there's also a sort of alcove with a U-shaped cushioned bench and pillows so that was good news.
There's no housewide heat, but there is a wood fireplace, which we didn't need to use. There are also towel warmers in both bathrooms and both bathrooms in addition have a wall heater so that was great. The downstairs bedroom also has a portable heater. We were comfortable during our stay.
There's a small porch area by the front door (not pictured) with just enough room for an Adirondack chair that we enjoyed and took turns sitting in and listening to the tui bird calls. Currently there are no Adirondack chairs or any other chair with back support on the big deck overlooking the water, so don't assume there is based on the pictures. There is a picnic table with two backless benches and a 3rd bench over by the windows. The only current possibility is to temporarily bring out a straight back kitchen chair, but that's also not really comfortable. Just an FYI so you won't be disappointed.
This was only my second time using Homeaway and my first overseas use so I was inexperienced, plus I wasn't clear on how to use my cellphone overseas either. There's a note on Homeaway, "Door code, wifi, and check in info — all in the HomeAway app" so I got the app and thought that info I needed would eventually appear there - which it didn't. I wasn't expecting an email with details so wasn't concerned when I didn't get one. There was some missed communication which got worked out, but NOTE - look for an email from the owner with directions and to provide the local property manager contact info. Make sure you get that! Then contact the property manager and make sure you have confirmation they know you're coming and you know how to get in the house!!!!
Once the original communication issue was resolved, both the owner and property manager are very helpful and kind and I don't hesitate at all to recommend this property and would go back in a heartbeat.
Incomparable views indeed!
There was no exaggeration in the photos and descriptions of the breathtaking views. The place is very comfortable, spacious and well equipped. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
