Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)

Custom built holiday home perched on Paku Hill with incomparable views of the Pacific Ocean, coastline and offshore islands. Spacious, protected deck to watch moonrises and sunsets. Trail from the house leads to long, sandy Ocean Beach, ideal for swimming, good snorkling along the reef & surfing when conditions are right, a morning jog or basking in the sun. Enjoy a hot outside shower with a 180 degree view. Walk along the estuary one kilometer to the town of Tairua with shops & services. Or closer to the wharf and ferry, dive shop, charter fishing and our favorite restaurant - 'Old Mill.' House is open and airy with local wood floors, cabinets and detailing, open beam ceilings, modern kitchen, carpeted bedrooms, fireplace for chilly nights, and a deck large enough to spend most your time. The master suite takes the entire upstairs with views all around. Very quiet, romantic & peaceful setting. Tairua on the Coromandel Peninsula has a Maritime climate with year round activities. Excellent fishing and diving and we enjoy our own catches of crayfish (lobster) and paua (abalone) and snapper often. Kayak in the estuary or to nearby Motuhoa Island. Most days we find we do not need to, or want to drive anywhere. Besides all the ocean activities there are local walks & trails, biking, or take the 10 minute ferry to Pauanui. There are easy drives to a multitude of unique & beautiful beaches, and to a host of other activities such as exploring the old goldmines in Broken Hills, wine tasting in Mercury Bay, thermal bathing at low tide at Hot Water Beach ,or a visit to the giant Kauri trees. Just a two + hour drive from Auckland airport.

About Laurel Brier

We are Hawaii residents who designed and oversaw the building of this home in 1998. Rob is a contractor in Hawaii and I am a vocational counselor with the State of Hawaii. Daughter Andrea (age 30) is in a PhD program at the University of Auckland and 28 year old son Lucas is an arborist/ farmer/hunter/fisherman/surfer living on the Big Island with his new bride, Mallory, his surf and business partner and nurse by profession.

Laurel Brier purchased this house in 1998

Why Laurel Brier chose New Zealand

We honeymooned in New Zealand in 1976 and have been visiting ever since. We spent a good part of 1999 in Tairua with our children enrolled in the local schools. Tairua is the other paradise we live when we have the chance.

What makes this house unique

We swim, surf, fish, hike, bike, read, snorkle, jog, walk to town and rarely drive when we are in Tairua. We will go to Hot Water Beach and hike to Catheral Cove and ride the bikes to Pauanui and take the ferry back to Tairua. We usually take one big drive to visit another area. In November 2012 we hiked the Heaphy Trek and the Abel Tasman. In March 2011 and 2013 we spent time in the Bay of Islands and the Kauri forests, in April 2010 we did a several day bike ride in Otago and hiked the Kepler Trek. It is now May of 2015 and the whole family just returned from a two month stay in NZ. We toured the north and south island hiking the Kepler and Queen Charlotte Track and the coastal walkway around Cape Reinga. Lucas showed Mallory the magic of Aotearoa for the first time.

WOW! Amazing! Breathtakingly AWESOME!

  • 5 of 5

Unforgettable experience our stay at the Pacific Vista home in Tairua. The entire time all we could do from keeping our jaws from dragging on the floor was to keep saying, "WOW!" Seriously, amazing, breathtakingly beautiful!

After a week of flying and driving the entire central to lower part of north island, we were so happy to have stayed our last days at Pacific Vista. It was really hard to leave the house to go anywhere. Though we did manage to drag ourselves out to explore the drives to the Coromandel coast, Hahei beach, Hot Beach, and the cute town of Thames. Fortunately, the weather was too cold for our wanting to go in to the ocean, even if it were hot water! A little sprinkle of rain here and there, didn't seem to bother most, as there were a number of people enjoying the ocean. Even so, the thought of returning to our beautiful house on Mt. Paku warmed our hearts and soothed our souls. We enjoyed great breakfasts at the Old Mill at the harbor down the hill on the days we did venture out. Interesting how the tide comes in and out, never saw anything like it. There were a couple of places to have dinner in town, but we chose to use the well appointed kitchen, with new convection oven, as well as the barbecue grill on the expansive deck (with a picnic table and benches that add a nice touch for entertaining) for grilling steaks, mint lamb burgers and fish/shellfish purchased from the local butcher in town. Honestly, if you're looking for peaceful serenity and R & R you will not be disappointed staying here. Oh, and did I mention the sunrises? Simply gorgeous! Really, I Can't wait to revisit Pacific Vista. As others have said, the price for what you get, would be hard to beat!! Thank you for having and sharing this beautiful home with us fortunate tourists. It is Truly a gem of a place.

Wonderful place for a holiday

  • 5 of 5

Ocean views from all parts of the house were stunning.

Really enjoyed going to sleep listening to the sounds of the ocean below.

Local beach is a short walk away or if you're lazy like us a quick drive down to the bottom of the hill.

Found it very difficult to leave the place for the planned excursions elsewhere.

Overall a quiet, spectacular place to have a break. We will certainly be going again.

Magic spot for ocean lovers

  • 5 of 5

Truly extraordinary place! The home is perched on Mt Paku, with some of the most expansive views of the ocean I have ever seen. The house has big glass windows and an awesome porch, so you feel like you are watching the changing moods of the ocean constantly. Saw a bright orange full moon rise over the islands, dolphins, and several double rainbows. Magic place. Ali and Laurel were very accommodating, helpful, and easy-going. Couldn't recommend the place more. Very good deal for how special it is. Definitely one of the favorite spots I visited in New Zealand.

Wonderful House to Enjoy Your NZ Shore Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a delightful stay in this house and are pleased to recommend it to others. Even though we had a week of rainy, rather than sunny days, this was the place to enjoy the amazing view and pounding surf below because of the walls of windows! The well-appointed kitchen was great for dinners in and the floor plan was delightful for both conviviality and privacy for parties traveling together. The only things we might suggest to the absolutely delightful owners (always responsive and so good-humored and pleasant) would be a comfortable chair or two in the living room suitable for reading and firmer mattresses. The location is charming, the decks amazing, the open and spacious design inspiring!

Look no further!

Not sure what we can say that others have not! The owners are great to deal with as we ran into some snafus with our payment due to last minute booking. They accommodated us through the confusion and we worked out the details. On our arrival, Ali even met us in town as we'd taken a wrong turn outside of Thames and came in later than expected. As we weaved our way up the hill looking down over the glistening lights of Tiarua with a crescent moon hanging low over the hills, we were hooked. This is an amazing rental and the location, which is perched on the side of Mount Paku overlooking the ocean, took our breath away. We stayed in mid-September and used this as a base for seeing the Coromandel. After visiting other locations, we are so pleased with this choice! We were able to explore and still have a great place to kick back. The morning sun heats up the house nicely in cooler weather, though it did get a bit cool later in the day. Plenty of wood for the fireplace took the edge off the chill but it probably didn't help that we came down with some kind of illness. We spent a lot of time under warm blankets that are provided, sipping on tea. If you are going in the winter, bring slippers or wool socks as the house has wood floors. (We found wonderful, inexpensive fleece-lined slippers at the Coconut Gallery in town.) Really though, the house is totally equipped with all the essential gadgets (and more) and felt like home. If we would have needed anything, Ali was always available. We even ran into her by chance one afternoon at a great little restaurant called Manaia, which contributed to the small town experience. We really appreciated the laundry facilities as we were traveling for several weeks. The bed in the loft is very comfortable and enjoyed waking to the surf and a Tui that had taken up its quirky song outside our window. We gave the trail to the beach a go and though a bit steep, was no problem. Also Laurel said it was ok to go ahead and use the guitar. I'm a singer-songwriter and it was a nice surprise to find the instrument tucked into the closet. Would really like to return at a time when we could both be feeling better. It is a slice of heaven and what a blessing to have great people open their homes for such a reasonable cost!

Beautiful home in such a stunning location!

  • 5 of 5

My Husband and I came to Tairua as part of our honeymoon trip to NZ. We were in disbelief as we pulled up the driveway- the expansive ocean and beach views left us breathless. What a great place to stay for two weeks! Enjoyed many sunny beach days, even caught some good surf. Quick beach access via a well maintained trail from the porch, and an easy, delightful walk to town thanks to the various neighborhood public walkways. Stunning moonrises over the near by off shore islands. Terrific outdoor hot water shower! Quiet area, we felt we had the entire hill to ourselves! Hike up to the top of Paku Hill for awesome panorama views of the town. Beautiful home, tastefully decorated, and well equipped. Very comfortable stay, and we hope to return soon with our family!
