About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Discover a wonderful way to enjoy a visit to downtown Wilmington in your own private guest house. Built in 1907 as one of the city's first automobile garages, this cottage boasts 456 sq. ft. of single story elegance in the shadow of some of Wilmington's finest historic homes. It is architecturally beautiful and the creative and eclectic use of space makes for a comfortable totally private stay in the Port City.

As a guest of the garage, you can experience all the city has to offer. Take a walk downtown to one of the interesting museums, tour the Battleship North Carolina or just spend the day leisurely on Wrightsville Beach, a mere 15 minute drive from downtown. We supply all the necessities for a day by the sea, beach chairs, sun umbrella and a cooler are there for your convenience.

The cottage was recently renovated with all of the latest amenities, featuring hardwood and marble floors, 10' ceilings, a fireplace and a full size kitchen with all the essentials. It has been professionally decorated with contemporary furniture and treasured antiques. The separate bedroom has an antique queen size bed, luxurious linens and includes Egyptian cotton towels and robes. Other upscale touches include 2 flat screen tv's, in ceiling stereo system and free wifi.

Sit outside and enjoy your morning coffee or evening glass of wine in your private, beautifully landscaped garden. This secluded location affords privacy and yet is a short 6 block stroll to the river, restaurants and shops. The popular Thalian Hall and the Bellamy Mansion are within a 3 block walk. Screen Gems Studios is just a short 2.5 mile drive from our front door, making this so convenient to take a fun and interesting tour.

The home has been lovingly restored by its owners for their private use. Their attention to detail shows, making this a truly unique place to stay for less than the cost of a hotel room. A one of a kind treasure and a wonderful way to enjoy all of Wilmington's weekend activities. The location is perfect for spending time at the beach, while enjoying the river walk and dining downtown in the evenings. With the recent addition of a full size washer and dryer, it is also a amazing place for a short time stay for out of town professionals for a week or a month.... whatever you need.

Why Patricia chose Wilmington

We are transplanted northerners who have fallen in love with the port city of Wilmington. It has all the charm of Charleston and Savannah , but much less crowded and laid back. We enjoy the proximity to nearby beaches.... we consider it the best of both worlds.

What makes this cottage unique

This location is the perfect blend of urban and residential,

a mixture of historic architectural charm with all the newest modern comforts . It is close to all the downtown activities, yet worlds away from it all ..... come enjoy something that is truly one of a kind.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for sharing your lovely cottage with me. I loved it !! I don't plan on ever staying anywhere else while in Wilmington.

Couldn't have been better!!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Chestnut Street Garage for a month (yes, we enjoyed the Azalea Festival very much). The fireworks were amazing! We did not personally meet Patricia, but all the texting we shared was timely and friendly. While the space is quite small, it was just perfect for the two of us. Patricia has done an amazing job transforming the small space into a home of luxury. The decorating is exquisite. The outdoor space is cozy too. We had most of our dinners out on the patio table. The bed was very comfortable, the shower was nice and warm and Wi-Fi was strong. The kitchen and bathroom were well stocked with everything you need. Beautiful linens. The washer and dryer was so convenient. The location on Chestnut was outstanding. We walked to the library, coffee shops, restaurants, churches and gift stores. Downtown Wilmington made it's way into our hearts and so did the Garage on Chestnut Street. Patricia, thank you for everything. Brian and Julie

Hey VRBO.... I need more stars so I can give this a "10"

  • 5 of 5

The other titles I was thinking of: "A Tiny Home That Does Not Disappoint" , "A VRBO property with a Bed & Breakfast Flair". My husband and I always rent homes through VRBO and I spend a lot of time pouring over the listings. We wanted a beach vacation in North Carolina in the Wilmington area and began our search with beach front properties, then Patricia's "Chestnut Street Garage" caught my eye. Why not have the best of both worlds...... A quick trip (15 - 20 minutes ) to Wrightsville Beach and a bit longer to Carolina & Cure Beaches while enjoying the walking proximity to everything in downtown Wilmington. The "Garage" is located on a quiet street in the historic district sandwiched between two large Federal Period homes. It is literally the space of a large garage. It is an immaculate and adorable place. How they used the space is amazing! Patricia goes the extra mile with so many extra touches. (Coffee and tea pods for the Keurig, bottled water, milk/cream, condiments in the refrigerator and even wine and beer for purchase, cotton robes and lots of towels and a fully stocked kitchen if you really want to cook) The Riverwalk, shops, restaurants and lots of historic sites were within walking distance. While my husband golfed I visited a few historic homes that were just around the corner. We really enjoyed this unique tiny home. I want to publically thank Patricia for mailing me my cellphone which I realized I left there 2 hours into our trip home. Thank you!

Owner's Response: Marla, Your review is amazing !! We certainly appreciate all the great things you have to say about the garage. We describe it as unique and a one of a kind property, but you have summed it up beautifully. I certainly hope you will be visiting our area again in the future, you were great guests. It was my pleasure to make sure you got your phone back, you would be surprised how many items have been left there !! Thanks again for staying with us, Patricia

The garage was an absolute gem!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved the Garage! The proximity to downtown is perfect for walking. The details that Patricia added to the garage were fabulous- the robes, the nice bedding and towels, the coffee machine and the well-stocked pantry were all wonderful! The wine honor bar and beer honor bar were fabulous as well! The use of space was well organized and very efficient .The outdoor patio was the perfect place for morning coffee or a pre-dinner glass of wine .We took a day trip to the beach with the beach towels, beach chairs and cooler that were provided. We came to Wilmington to look for property for possible retirement and found Wilmington to be wonderful. When we come back to Wilmington on our next trip we will definitely stay at the Garage! thank you Patricia!

Comfortable, quaint, and cool in the summer heat

  • 5 of 5

Very nice stay in a charming old building. Had all that we needed for a comfortable week in Wilmington - and the little extras made it that much better making it more of a home away from home than a stay in a hotel could ever offer. Walking distance from the riverfront, restaurants, breweries, and historic homes, and despite the 90s and humidity, it was VERY cool and dry inside. Would definitely stay again!

Owner's Response: Kim and Chris, I am so happy that you enjoyed your time in Wilmington and stay at our garage. The heat wave you experienced seemed to be effecting most of the east coast, glad you could cool off and relax at the cottage. We have tried to make our guests feel like they are visiting a friend's place and not like a hotel room ... so pleased you liked it. Thanks for taking the time to write such a wonderful review, Patricia
